When Did Bed & Breakfast Places Get To Be...

so elaborate & frankly expensive?

When my husband & I first started traveling the U.S. as a married couple in the 1980ties, B&B's were just starting getting popular in the U.S. I recall them being friendly, pleasant & modest options to hotels & motels. The "thread count" on the sheets was not even spoken of. The breakfast was good but fairly simple. And, yes, the bathroom was frequently shared & down the hall. Not everyone's cup of tea, but perfectly adequate for many.

Up to a few years ago, I still had the typed, mimeographed (remember that marvel?), & stapled "booklet" of available B&B's from our New England trip back in 1981. Amusingly, $30 per night was really high-end even in the best locations, with $20 being the norm.

I really miss what B&B's used to be.
