When did you first appreciate music?
Comments (8)As a very young child, I remember playing a 45 of John Phillip Sousa's Stars and Stripes over and over on my little record player. I referred to it as "The Train Song" because there was a blue train on the label. I also had a recording of a Japanese song that I sang along with, although I had no idea what the words meant. My father collected recordings of folk artists, celtic musicians, marching bands, bagpipes, and fiddle music while his friends listened to Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. My mother always had the radio tuned to the rock and roll station, so I remember hearing all the hits from the 50's and early 60's while in the house. I took ballet lessons beginning at age 3 and became familiar with the music of great composers without knowing any of their names. It was only later that I learned we were doing plies and sautes to Chopin and Tchaikovsky. In 5th grade I got my first guitar and the first tune I learned was "Frog Went A-Courtin'", played all in one chord, D, with finger picking. I spent hours in my room learning old folk songs and guitar licks. Like Kathy, I got my own radio around jr. high and listened to KRLA in the dark, late at night when I was supposed to be sleeping, but that was the only time I could pick up the signal. I loved Neil Diamond's "Cherry, Cherry" and The Doors' "Light My Fire" equally well. In college I became fascinated with bluegrass music, it just yanked on my heart so hard, especially the fiddle. One day my father told me his dad had owned a violin and I should go get it from under Aunt Vivian's bed. So I did. I had it repaired and I've been playing it ever since. I get together with a group every week to have fun making music, and I consider it central to my well-being. And it has spread. My husband has learned blues guitar in the last 10 years, daughter plays guitar and piano, son plays electric bass and guitar....See MoreDid you dislike your shingles when they were first put on??
Comments (11)Oh, superchick, we were not happy at all when we first saw our shingles. We had chosen a Tamko Heritage shingle without seeing a sample (didn't have it in this area) so we had to order them after looking at them on the internet. The lumber yard called my DH and said they couldn't get our color in the 30 yr, but could in the XL. The day the roofers started, we drove over to the house with such anticipation! When we pulled in the driveway, we were so disappointed because all we could see was red! We spent that evening going in and out of the house, hoping we would like them more each time we saw them. I posted a message here and on the paint forum with a picture asking for exterior color advice and got this great message from funcolors: "The roof is not your typical neutral roof color selection. However, it could be fabulous with the right colors on the body and trim. A serendipitous roof color choice." After looking up the exact definition of serendipitous, which means making a fortunate discovery by accident, I began to think of new and different ways to paint our Hardiplank. We came up with a completely different color scheme than we had intended to use but I think it will be really pretty. And, in the meantime, the roof has been completely finished and we are really happy with it now. So, give this some time and let your eyes adjust to the new colors. Then be open to something different on your exterior. I hope your roof turns out to be serendipitous too! The link below shows our roof at the beginning stages and the Hardiplank is still not painted yet! Susan Here is a link that might be useful:...See Morewhen did you get your first hot flash
Comments (1)Hi Newgardenelf, It does sound like you are in the perimenopause stages. My sister went through it at 35 and my mom was 39. Although you are still young, it does happen. I have read this fantastic FREE e-book that I'm telling EVERYONE about. These two sisters who both went through menopause early have written a great book full of wonderful information. Since you are just starting menopause it would be good for you to have now so you know what you can do to help yourself - like foods to eat and not to eat, staying away from caffeine, etc. Here's the link. http://menomavens.com/downloads.html Hope this helps - Be well, Bobbi...See MoreHow was YOUR Christmas - what did you get - did you have fun?
Comments (1)I had a very quiet Christmas, and just as well because it was a stinking hot day (35C at 7am!) and there was no energy to breathe, much less anything else. My son and his lady came for breakfast, the first of many visits they had scheduled for the day. This was just fine by me. I got them when they were full of Christmas spirit, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and by the time they left their appetites were ruined for everyone else's food! The best part of the breakfast was that THEY did all the cooking - I just 'supervised' and provided the food. We had a lot of fun and laughter together exchanging our little gifts, and when they left, I was able to recuperate by sleeping most of the day in front of the fan, or beginning to read one of the several books they gave me (from a list I'd prepared of Must Haves). My sleep was, however, disturbed by a number of phone calls from interstate friends, all very welcome. And in the evening a friend visited, ostensibly to watch Dancesport on TV with me (we are both into ballroom dancing), but mostly to escape her rowdy family at home after a mountain of a day. (She often uses my place as a refuge when things get A Bit Much.) In between these interuptions, I had the opportunity of watching all those silly little Christmas shows on TV. You know, Frosty the Snowman, The Little Drummer Boy and so on. I have a sneaking liking for these little things - maybe I'm in my second childhood! All very pleasant indeed, thank you....See More
