When did you first appreciate music?

Music was always in our house, Maternal; pristine baby grand with 1000's of popular sheet music songs. Paternial, classical - no sheet music - well worn (beaten) upright piano.

I do not remember having a radio. When we got TV I remember Kate Smith bellowing out "God bless America."

It wasn't until I was about nine years old when I got a Hi-Fi record player. I got "Peter and the Wolf" which is a great kids intro to musical instruments.

I broke into "zee" parents record collection and had fun with a lot of stuff. For some reason I really liked Madame Butterfly by Puccini. It has been much critizised; Anti-American, Colonialist, I could care less. After a few months of this their came to be a lot of conversation about private schools and how nice they were.

We reached an accord. I went back to irritating people in other ways.

At what age were you when you realized that this was really cool?
