I'm Going to NYC!

My sisters and I are going to NYC this Saturday. We have planned this since March. Oldest sister lives in Eastern Canada (New Brunswick) my other sister lives in Northern Ontario and I live in Alberta. We are going for middle sisters 50th birthday. Since we all live so far away from each other we rarely see each other, so we thought this would be a good sister trip to take. I have never been to NYC, but both my sisters are Marathon runners and have ran in the NY Marathon. We rented a condo on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I arrive last and arrive at Newark, so I hired a car service to take me to the condo. I figured this might be my one and only time going, so might as well arrive in style! We plan on doing a lot of shopping and taking in a play. For the people who live in NY, what is the weather like this time of year? Can you recommend anything else thats not tourist like that we might enjoy? I don't really want to spend most of our time waiting in lines, so we want to avoid the big tourist attractions and find things off the beaten path.

It's going to be a beautiful weekend, with temp highs in the mid 70's and at night falling into the 50's. Bring slacks and a sweater.

A great weekend to walk! Start at Central Park at 59th and walk 5th Avenue to see the shops. It will bring you down past Rockefeller Center and on down to the Empire State Building.

I don't live in New York but I've been a few times. If you are looking for something sort of out of the ordinary to do, I would suggest looking into some food tours. I've done three different ones: Brooklyn Pizza tour, Greenwich Village walking tour and Lower East Side walking tour. On both of the walking tours, we did a fairly small area but got to taste a large variety of foods in several establishments in addition to learning about the neighborhood and the culture.

On the Brooklyn Pizza tour, we took a bus from Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate at two different pizza places in Brooklyn. They drove to several locales where movies were filmed and showed us the clip of the movie while were passing through the same spot. Very fun.

Speaking of the Brooklyn Bridge, that's also a fun thing to do. Take the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan across the bridge. No lines but great views of the city.

For play tickets (if you don't already have yours or want to see additional plays while you're there) I definitely recommend the TKTS booth in Times Square. Don't be intimidated by the line! It moves very quickly and in fact, we usually have barely made up our minds about what play we want to see by the time we got to the front of the line. They sell half price tickets for that day's performance of selected Broadway & off-Broadway shows.

If you have time, I'd run down to the local library before you leave and get a book on NYC. I've found great hints in some of those books. Have a great time! I love New York!

Well, the damage has been done, so please don't fret yourself into a sleepless night. I have burned them, froze them and generally made myself a target of the plant police. They can be tough. If you get it back to the place where they thrived before, it could conceivably re-start. Keep it warm and moist, but not wet. Do not trim it anymore, let the pieces wither and shrivel. Do not re-pot or otherwise disturb it any more. Remember that with less greenery, it will need less water. And wait. This is not the time of year it makes new stems, so if it just sits there, that is normal. The parts nearest the soil need to be somewhat succulent for re-growth to occur. The brown bark nearest the soil covers the green that photosynthesizes. If you have even 1/2 inch of sturdy stem, you will probably have a little plant in the spring.

... All the time. I never seem to know when to stop, even with hubby calling out the door "Time to come in now". When it's hot I pin a pillow slip with crushed ice in it around my neck. When it gets dark I turn on the outside lights, but try to come in by 10 PM so the lights don't bother the neighbors. I'd rather be outside than inside any ole' day and gardening gives me an excuse to be there. Incidentally, for insect bites Bob happened to notice that HEB brand antibiotic ointment has a topical pain reliever in it so it stops the itch of mosquito bites very nicely. Maybe other brands have it too. Well, almost time to put the rolls in the oven. My computer is right next to the kitchen so it's easy to take a little rest from cooking in that chair :-) Wishing you all a blessed Easter Sunday ...

It was a great day, although I didn't get to make the pins. We were lucky to be there on the 1st instead of this weekend when the shows were on strike. I am saving all those ideas though, maybe for a pig swap or something! Thanks to you all.

I agree with you Ellendi, when you borrow money, it should be paid back based on the agreement but a lot of lenders have changed the terms of those agreements and made it almost impossible for people to repay making the banks even richer. It's a vicious cycle. Some, not all but some of the scenarios we're seeing today involve a lot of good money conscious people, who had every intention of paying their debts and because of circumstances beyond their control, are now forced to make a choice between housing and feeding their family or paying debt. Which would any of us choose in those circumstances? I personally, feel the banks are responsible for a large part of what's going on economically and they should be willing to help those deserving of it by any means they can, but they're not. Instead they are calling loans due, forging foreclosure documents, making more risky transactions, raising rates on people, charging grossly exorbitant fees and the list goes on, so it's very hard to have much empathy, KWIM? BTW, when I say deserving of it, I mean those who are not spend alcoholics abusing a system. With a shortage of jobs and change in the working climate many qualified people can't find work in their own fields and are taking jobs at whatever pay then can get just to keep afloat. If you live in an area that isn't in decline or working in a field where you see a lot more of these scenarios on a daily basis, it's hard to relate but I do and let me tell you, good, hard working people are finding themselves in situations they never dreamed they'd be in and it happened quick. It's horrible and it's scary. In addition to the above, debt Collectors are obligated to follow certain procedures and will often times have no problem breaking the laws to collect because they're betting the person they're contacting isn't aware of their rights. I suspect that that is the case with the caller in the Dave Ramsey conversation.

I was just there over the summer and we saw The Lion King at the Minskoff theatre.... stunning and brilliant. Highly recommend going to see that. We did mostly touristy things while we were there but some that you might want to try are the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, there is something called the Foods of NY tour which is really cool if you love eating and finally, don't forget Coney Island!

Took my DS an GS for a quick weekend trip, years ago. Wish I could go more often. Love NYC.

Central Park is great.......I also love going to the Museum of Natural History and to the Guggenheim.
All are walkable from where you are staying.
Keep an eye out for my grandkids in Central Park or at Lincoln Center.

You are going to LOVE it and you will go back, I guarantee it. I hated NY for years and avoided it, but I went in April and loved it. Then went in June, and again last week and today I was looking at reservations to go again either this month or next month.

I don't do the touristy things, but it's great for craft shopping - oh and shopping in general. Have a great time!

It's supposed to be nice this weekend--low-mid 70Ã¯Â¿Â½'s during the day, chillier at night though, so bring a light jacket or coat.
