another family loss

We've had so many lossed loved ones around the KT, I hesitated to start another sad post.

My grandfather passed away yesterday morning. This is the husband of 60+ years to the grandmother I lost last month. He had Alzheimers and Parkinsons and visibly aged and weakened every day since my grandmother died. My father made the decision to put him into an assisted living center on Sept. 15. Grandpa wasn't excited about it, but he accepted it and spent the first several hours really enjoying himself meeting other veterans who have shared experiences and hobbies. He even liked the food. ;o) But tried to go exploring around the building without his walker/cane and fell and broke his hip. He wasn't there 24 hours. He had surgery a couple days later, then was moved to a rehab center, but worsened and just could not recover. So it was a crazy, hectic, emotional 10 days for my dad, mom and aunt.

I can feel at peace with Grandpa's death. It was very hard to see him last month, knowing how lost and confused he was, it was just too much for him. That's not a good life for anyone, so there is a sense of peace for me knowing he has peace now. I have no living grandparents now, though, and it is making me remember with smiles and tears the fun times I had with all of them growing up.

My dad is who my thoughts are really of tonight. He lost both his parents in 6 weeks time and became the one his siblings look to for decisions, support and guidance through all of this grief. It's as if the generations have moved up very suddenly, and he has big, new burdens on his heart and mind. He's not even the oldest, he is #3 of 4. But he's the "strong one" and wish I could give him more strength. He's the patriarch now, Father and Grandfather.

I'm leaving for FL in the morning. See ya in a few days.
