My Niece Passed Away

Reading some of these posts about loved ones passing away made me want to tell y'all about my niece leaving.

Many of you know that I have lost my only daughter. She was 19 and was hit by a truck as she was trying to save our dog after he had been hit by a car. This was 10 years ago. On July 23rd, my sister's only daughter who was 35 passed away. She had had gastric bypass surgery and developed an ulcer. The ulcer perforated her stomach and intestine and she developed septic shock from the infection. She ended up having 2 surgeries to get all of the infection out, but was extremely sick (they say the sickest in the hospital). She was on a vent, dialysis, etc. etc. She was getting a little better, but had a massive stroke and became brain dead. We watched the machines for hours as she slipped away, just like watching my daughter, Christin.

One of the saddest parts of this is that all of this was avoidable. When she first went to a hospital, she was not treated and sent home even though she was dehydrated and was full of infection. Hours later, she went to another hospital and this is where she died after suffering tortures for 19 more days.

Please pray for our family, expecially my sister and her husband and only son. Life is hard.

I'm so sorry. I won't say i know your pain, because i don't, but i have also lost my father suddenly. two weeks ago today i found him in his truck. The medical examiner said it was a massive heart attack. I never and i don't think he knew either that anything was wrong. I love my dad so much! He was the greatest dad ever. He taught me how to fish, hunt, play golf, and anything else i wanted to learn. When i grew up (i'm 34), he was still my favority fishing buddy and golf partner. I can't tell you all the good my dad did for our community. I was so proud of who my dad was, and would brag about him to my friends all the time. he was a great man. Now i can't even think of fishing again, or playing golf. I know he would tell me to go and have fun, but i don't want to. I just want my dad back. I feel cheated. I should have been there, my dad should have never been alone when he went. It probably wouldn't have mattered, but at least ... i maybe could have comforted him in some way. I hope that he wasn't scared or hurting badly. God, why? the weekend before he left us, we were suppose to go fishing, but it poured down the rain. my question is if God knew he was going to take my dad, why couldn't i have that last trip. i know that's selfish, but that's how i feel. I miss him so much. I still need him. Just the other day i said to myself, "dad would know what to do here" and started to call his cell phone, only to realize that it was on the table beside of me. I'm so sorry. No, it isn't weird. I think all of us want to go home again at some time. Maybe it's grief, maybe it's wanting to be someone's child again... When I was in my late 20's or early 30's, I was going through a stressful time. I began to have a recurring dream. In real life, my grandmother's house was a tumbledown, worn-out old house that she'd had moved onto her lot, so it wasn't very level; the floors sort of went every whichway.. It always needed paint, & the windows were never perfectly clean. The linoleum floors were worn out, creased & buckled, the house was cold in the winter & hot in the summer, & the kitchen always smelled like dishwater. My grandmother had been a very old lady, bent from years of childbearing & hard work, & her clothes were always faded. Her white aprons were dingy. In my dream, it was always a sunny, blue-sky day, & I was "going home" for Thanksgiving. I would turn my car down the little dirt road & see, to my amazement, that the house was perfectly straight, & it was bright white with fresh paint. The windows were crystal-clean, & I could see the cheery flames in the Dearborn heater. Just as I arrived at the door, my grandmother would fling the door open & said, "Sylvia! Come on in this house!" She was chipper & cheery, & she was standing up straight, wiping her hands on her snowy-white apron. Her dress was bright & crisp. The house smelled like coffee & bacon. I said, "They told me you were dead!", & she laughed & said not at all, that she'd always be here for me. I dreamed that dream because, even 8 or 9 or so years after my dear grandmother had died & her house had been torn down, I wanted to go "back home", where I'd always been safe & happy. You & I are fortunate that we have warm memories of "home" to comfort us & maybe to make us smile. Take care.

How fortunate you are, and thankful you can be, that your family has been so close, for the people in many families have nursed their grievances with the result that get-togethers are only partly pleasant ... and I know that you are not thinking about such things at the moment. Now you can help your brother find his way through this, and he you. I hope that you can find enough greater pleasure in remembering times with your mother than the pain associated with them that sharing them can help ease the pain for both of you. Perhaps in the coming days you may find that others have cherished memories of your mother that you've not been aware of, which will help you be more thankful for her life and the influence that she had on others, as well. One of the most effective ways that we can show our respect and appreciation for the good things that were in the lifestyle of others is to go out and do similar things as we carry on our lives, altered somewhat as indicated to fit into our way of living. Your story hits home. I know how you feel and it hurts. Mine is not exactly the same but there are similarities on both my husband’s side with his mother and me with my mom and siblings. I’m finally facing up to some realities now. Your mom has real issues that she never dealt with. Is your cousin’s mom around? Does your mom possibly feel some duty to stand in for her? All of that still doesn’t explain or excuse your mom’s behavior. I’m sorry. Hang in there. Your mom is missing out. It’s a mistake.

Lu, I am so sorry. You were a source of strength for me when I lost my son (only child) in a car accident 2 years ago--and I visited Christin's website many times. Now to watch your sister go through this--another needless death--must hurt beyond comprehension. Please convey my heartfelt sympathy to your sister and her family. Hugs!

I am saddened by this and am so sorry for your family. It sounds like how my nephew died 3 years ago. A massive infection. He also was 35 when he died and my sister's only son. He has a son who was 13 at the time. I can relate what your all going through. Such hard times to go through. I'll say many prayers for your family.

I revisited your daughter's site for the first time in a long time. She was so sweet. And now you've lost your niece, too. That hurts a lot. I just posted on another thread about losing my niece 7 years ago. It's like losing one of your own. My sympathies to you and your family.
