Minor computer woes...'back' button won't work

When I go to the top toolbar, hit the blue "back" arrow, nothing happens. The same page/window stays open. I can not use this button to scroll back to the other pages I just viewed.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Shut it down and restart it (reboot). That will fix a lot of things.

There is generally always more than one way to accomplish things on a computer. :-)

If your Back arrow isn't working, you can still navigate backwards by pressing down the Alt key and while it's down press the left arrow key (on the set of arrow keys between the alphabet keys and the "number keys" that are set up like a 10-key keypad). You can also go forward by pressing the Alt key and the right arrow key.

Damccoy,Firefox didn't go back to normal after I disabled & reopened. It said I needed to update which I attempted to do. Got a bunch of notices to update other stuff. Page is hung up now with Java saying critical update needed. I didn't have Java. I was going to uninstall FF but can't do that because it needs to be closed in order to uninstall & page is hung on the Java thing. My security warned that something being offered (not Java) was phishing scam & I got rid of that. I guess my question now is how to uninstall firefox? rose

"F2 for setup and F12 for boot options." Are you saying you get this far and the computer REBOOTS by itself, if that is the case you start to consider a power issue here. How many files did the user want to save? Where are the 2 recovery disks that should have came with the pc, or does it have a recovery partition that you would have an option for after hitting F12 if you get that far. If you slave the drive run your options scan disk, check disk ect, the go to the manfactures site of the hard drive an run there tests on the drive. I wonder if you can get recovery disks from Dell for the 2400 series?

Wow! Thanks for the additional replies! kbarb, Right now the mouse isn’t working for waking at all. It is set (in the settings you noted in your most recent comment) to wake from sleep but is failing to do so. I did find that in installing new hardware, my computer guy installed a different brand of motherboard (Foxconn). This, I suppose, could be the issue (though I don’t know all the details of why it wouldn’t be allowing me to use the mouse to wake from sleep. Anyway….). I checked the version and it does seem to be the latest version. Also, FWIW, I checked some websites (message boards) that encourage users to be extremely careful about updating BIOS because of the possibility of really messing up your computer. (E.g. this page [http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/6440-45-tomshardware#t925887]; it’s an old thread, but those interested might want to read the first comment made by bbb_forever (2011) which is food for thought.) beng12, Yes, I’ve got the network adapter’s ability to wake disabled. But keyboard and mouse enabled with no good results. Snidley, When he gets back from vacation I’ll likely contact him, since this issue (though not a deal-killer by any means) appears to involve things that I don’t want to risk screwing up royally. He does have the TeamViewer software in this computer, so whatever settings he can check/repair by remoting in will be the first course. If nothing is resolved that way, and if I’m too anal about the whole thing to let it drop, I’ll have him come by in person. Honestly, though, my real concern is that I wanted to avoid using the power button all the time and just use the mouse. It’s easier to replace an over-used mouse than do without a computer while a new power button (and whatever else) is installed due to excessive wear and tear on the old one. :-) Anyway, thanks again to all for the input!

Have you tried rebooting? Check for Windows Updates too. Another keyboard shortcut is to use the backspace key to go back, shift+backspace will go forward.

Are you sure there's a page to go back to? If a link opened in a new window or tab, you won't be able to back up. Click the button to the right of the Forward button and it'll give you the recent pages history. You can also use that to select the page you want.

Only other thought off the top of my head is, have you noticed a bunch of dog treats being delivered lately? Maybe Harry and Sam have been...

If you are already at the top of the stack, the "back button" may be grayed out and no action will happen. To find out where you are in the stack, click on the little down arrow to the rigth of the back-forward buttons and a drop down list should appear of recent pages visited. You can move to any one of those 'visited' pages by clicking on it.

The other possibility is that your virus checker is set so agressive that it is removing references to recent visited pages.

I think it is honestly something to do with this site. Mine worked fine till just the other day and now the back buttong will not work on this site. Works fine on other sites, just not here anymore.
I wonder if it has something to do with those ads opening up and running at the top of the pages. Drives me nuts!

Thanks everyone. I shut the computer down and in the process it forced me to install some upgrades I'd been "putting off."

Everything seems to be fine now.

I forget that simply shutting off and then back on can cure a lot of problems.
