Computer won't play newly created CD

I found a great explanation of how to create a CD of photos in Picasa. Problem is my computer won't play the CD.

When I right click on the CD drive and hit 'autoplay' nothing happens. When I open Windows Media Player, nothing happens.

When I put in an instructional CD (how to use my new Vitamix Blender) no problems, Windows Media Player opens up and plays.

I thought when I inserted a disc, any disc, it would begin playing on it's own.

How do you suggest I see this one?

I have Windows XP, computer is about 5 years old.

Sometimes you need to close the disc properly before ejecting it. What did you do at the end?

Not sure what you mean. After putting pictures on the disc using Picasa I choose the Picasa option to "view the disc." Nothing happened. Not sure sure I did next......

At some point I opened my CD drive to test the other disc which did work, then closed it.

Loralee, regardless of the software you will eventually settle on, you will need to use multiple DVD's unless you opt for an external hard drive. I suggest that you take an afternoon and use a disk burning application (I can't stand Roxio, more on this later) to back up the files and folders of your choosing. If your DVD writer is capable, use double layered DVD-R's as they are 8.5 GB each. Then, get in the habit of backing up new files to dvd on a regular basis. A real simple solution would be to buy an external USB or Firewire hard drive and copy over your precious files, though I would still make DVD's and put them away. Most, if not all, external drives come with some sort of "back-up" software. As Ravencajun suggests, Trueimage is pretty good. I do not recommend anything by Roxio as their software has proven to conflict with hardware drivers and also creates problems when installed with other software. It doesn't play well with other software. I have made many repairs to friends and family computers that Roxio has caused. There are many other cd/dvd burning software solutions available, I am partial to Nero. I also suggest Total Commander as a file manager. It far exceeds the capability of Windows Explorer and once you use it, you'll never look back. If you get an external hard drive and use total commander, you'll be done in no time at all. Good luck.

If your cds will play in a regular household player, and the player does not say "mp3/cd-r/rw compatible" chances are your cds are formatted as regular cds not mp3 disks - does that sound right? Did you convert the files to be regular cd type files, or did you just burn the mp3 files to disk as is? Some car cd players won't play burned disks at all, most newer ones specify that they can; and what formats. I had a 99 VW Golf, and some played, some didn't but mostly it was ok but that was not so much by design. The disks you use make a difference, avoid heavy/dark dye/base layers, the more silver looking (like commercial cds) the better. Ipod or similar may have to be your workaround. The slightly reduced quality (mp3 is a lossy format) you get used to, and having the range of songs, random play and eliminating need to change cds probably make it worthwhile.

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

You need to vent the cabinet. Lifespans of electronics are cut short by heat. High density electronics areas require fan forced cooling. The air must be drawn in and exit out. Computer case style muffin fans can be used. Make sure you get a quiet one. There are kits available now with thermal sensors and power supplies to make this a nice DIY project.

Picasa apparently doesn't need to be finalized. I have learned alot about Picasa from this website.

I just tried another CD, but the same thing, nothing plays. This time I ejected the disc, closed Picasa, put the disc back in. I did see the disc on my mouse pointer and heard the appropriate noise of the CD spinning? but then silence and nothing. Once again right clicked on my computer, found the CD drive, clicked autoplay and nothing.

I read online that there can be problems with autoplay. Isn't there another way to view discs? I have Nero on my computer as well.

Random thoughts:

Did you try a reboot? On occasion transferring files just gums up the paths.

Did you check the Device Manager to insure the drive is working properly?

Does the drive work appropriately with perhaps a music CD?

Did you try selecting Open on the drop down menu then selecting the first listed file?

Opps, when I clicked on the folder under "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" there they were!

My problem was I expected some program to just open up and show the pictures, as has happened in the past.

I don't know much about "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" guess I should read about it.

With Windows Picture and Fax Viewer you click the left or right arrows to move forward or back through the photos. Click the centre button to see a slideshow.

Don't know what I was searching but I landed on this webpage showing me how to change my default image viewer from Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to my choice. I like to use Picasa so I choose to follow the steps which seemed to work.

Unfortunately the same thing happens, I have to go into My Computer and click on the folder with the pictures on it.

I've still got the same question going through my mind.....why doesn't Picasa (or WPF) automatically open up and play the CD when I insert it in the CD drive?

When I put in a CD about how to use my new blender, it opens up automatically and starts playing.

This information is from my Vista Photo Gallery. Maybe it can help.

Open Photo Gallery>File>Options>Import tab>on the bottom third of the appearing window is Change Default AutoPlay Options>Pictures.

Review the offered options for perhaps something to your liking.

I don't seem to have windows movie maker.

What I do use most often is Picasa, I also use occassionally Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

DA I have no idea how to follow your suggestions.

My primary question remains the same - I thought in the past when I put a CD in it opened automatically.

That functionality was turned off some time ago due to security problems with autorun.

There was a recent Windows update which was directed at auto-run. Most users I have been in contact with did not install it.

The Eldergeek has the cure but it requires you to modify the registry. Be sure to back up your registry before making the changes.

Thanks guys. I get the drift - I was lucky when CD's opened automatically, don't expect it anymore.
