CD won't play right

We have one of those under the counter radio/CD players. Just bought a new CD and it doesn't play right in this machine, but it plays fine in all our other players and in the car. It's not the machine because all our other CD's play just fine in it. Any ideas?

You run into this situation periodically. A CD won't play in one player even though it will play in all others.

Does your computer have a CD burner? If so, make a copy of the CD and see the copy plays in the under-counter player. I don't think it's a copyright violation to make a copy of a CD you legitimately purchased in a situation such as this, where you can't get the original to play properly, or if you want to make a backup copy in case the original is damaged.

My suggestion is that you get one of those CD cleaner CD's and run that thru the player. Most likely the IR reader is dusty or has some kitchen "stuff" - like smoke, grease, whatever on the readers. Yo may have to do this every time you cook certain foods.

Nicki, I have the same prob since the Dell man was here and had it all apart. I tried the paperclip trick the other day (at Bob's suggestion). With a few attempts and holding my mouth just right, I got it open several times. Now this evening even that does not work. I just tried fruit's suggestion above. It opens one of the drives, but not the problem one. I tried pushing the button, and then pressing in a bit on the drive while it is attempting to open. Sometimes it opens, and sometimes not, but will open then with no problem the next time I push the button. Just keep fiddling with it, and I think you will get the knack of it. Do you feel comfortable with taking the side off of it? I'm going to take the side off of mine now and see what that does. brb Sue...off to tear up/down her computer

Hi, Paddy. I saw that - and went through lots of the steps - leading to the last and final thing which worked. It wasn't that page exactly - but another on the last.fm forum that not only suggested that a plugin was missing, but it brought a list of plugins to pick from. I don't know where this last came from - if it was their suggestions - or these were the plugins I had before that had become disabled when I started Firefox from safe mode. Out of 13 choices, I just enabled the following six - and now it works: microsoft windows media player firefox mozilla default plug-in quicktime plus-in 7.6.4 realplayer version plugin shockwave flash 10.0.32.18 windows media player plug-in dynamic I don't know which of these did the trick, but now it's working. The reason I picked those 6 is that they are all programs I might have now or have had in the plast - the others were not familiar to me, so I didn't think they could be the plug-ins I had had before that got fire.fm to work. I would still feel more comfortable knowing what those plug-ins do - and if I really need them all. I have windows media player and quicktime. I'm pretty sure I have adobe shockwave - and of course, have firefox (hence picking mozilla default plug-in). And I don't know where the list of 13 plugins came from. Perhaps they were Firefox or fire.fm suggestions (that actually sounds right). It's working, but I'd still like to know more about what I did. Thanks/ Lynn.

Tell us what, if anything, happens once you insert the CD in the drawer. Is the data written using genealogy program, if so are you running the same software to recognise the data? As kudzu9 notes, you can use Windows Explorer RIGHT click Start click Explore and a new window appears. Look down the left side for your CD player, likely marked as D: click on it to highlight it and now look in the right pane for the contents of the CD. Try double clicking on anything that says 'Application' to the right of the file name.

I burned a copy of the original and it plays fine. Very strange. Never ran into this before. Good idea about cleaning the player, it is right next to the stove. Thanks you guys!
