computer won't read install cd

HP Pavilion, Vista 64 FF7

I have been working on trying to reinstall my Microsoft wireless keyboard (first installed 2007).

I dropped the keyboard and it quit working, it would not type or do anything....but the mouse stilled worked.

(Right now I am using my wired keyboard and mouse)

First I checked to see if there were any updates for the driver, there were not.

then I unpluged the usb connection for the transmitter and rebooted. Then I un-installed the program (rebooted again) and tried to reinstall from the original cd that came with the keyboard/mouse.

The CD will not open on the computer, the computer opens in the Windows Media Player instead.

My question is this: Is this cd too old (2007) for this version of vista/firefox?

Any suggestions?

If this is the same version of Vista that has always been on this computer, this should have nothing to do with the CD not working. Firefox version should not affect this either. Try using the Run feature. Start>Run. Actually, I'm not sure you should even need the CD to install your keyboard. Usually the drivers needed are already present. I have another brand of wireless keyboard and mouse, and I did not run the CD to install them.
Sounds as if you damaged something when you dropped the keyboard. Have you checked the batteries?

grandms, yes, I checked the batteries first thing.

Even if I didn't need the CD to do the installation, shouldn't the computer have opened it and read and installed it.? I can't figure why it's not reading the cd. I had no luck either with the start > run, it went straight to Windows Media Player.

I wanted to thank each of you for your suggestions about solving my problem. I tried each of your suggestions but without success, I wound up calling tec support and talked with a young man in the Philippines, he was very patient and got me through the process and I got the printer installed. Word of caution, read carefully the instructions when installing new hardware and when it says not to hook up the machine to the usb port before being told to do so during the installation process, DON'T DO IT. I was careless and it caused me a lot of aggravation........

Unfortunately my sudden refusal to shutdown, seems to be quite regular. I click "Turn Off From the Start Menu" We get to the windows is now (closing)shutting down screen, the jingle plays...and we are not on nor off. Its Microsoft limbo hell. Mouse control has shut down. Can I delete .Net Framework 2.2 without hell to pay? My gut feeling is my problems are stemming from .net or the Merc board. The Merc board once shut down my Morrowind game and cancelled the tilde key assignment. Even Bethesda Softworks said there was nothing I could do. Ideazon support told me to upgrade my all keyboard drivers to hid, and that (unknowingly) knocked out the PS2 keyboard drivers used by the laser mouse assignments...it wasn't until I redownloaded the laser mouse drivers, did everything start to work. I can now cheat on my game to my hearts' content. (The tilde key brings up a game console where dirty little cheaters, like me, can enter codes to cheat.) This driver install and uninstall freeze with this crappy keyboard, that I'm stuck with to save money, is going to break me. It might have caused some problems. I had to reboot my computer from the default settings in bios. Although there was a warning on the Microsoft update site about one of .net updates rendering some computers unresponsive? Well! gee. I CANNOT DO A SYSTEM RESTORE! I tried a few different restore points...and honest to Pete!...I got this message saying the system hadn't changed so they weren't going to bother, there wasn't any point!? I mean, I never!!! What the????

I just replaced the dead cd-burner drive on one of my computers, I got a lite-on DVD burner drive that does pretty much everything from newegg for like $39. There are good prices out there. I also have an external usb cd-burner that I can connect to any of my computers by usb to have an added cd-burner, I found it on a clearance rack at an electronics store for around $15. If you do not want to dig into the machine to take the old one out and install the new one you may want to get one of the external usb ones. Replacing the internal one is not difficult but does take a bit of knowledge, it is more difficult than say adding memory. Some times the doors can get off the tracks and on occasion they can be taken out and worked on and fixed but that is a big maybe! It is a good idea to never force things! Also if you use the paperclip in the little hole in the front of the drive it is usually advised to have the pc turned off and unplugged to do that, I know not everyone does that but on the directions that come with them it does say that. Guess the risk of something electrical happening is the reason.

Have you tried more than one CD? And more than one type? If for example you are trying a music CD now try inserting you XP operating system CD and see what pops up. Does the activity light on the front of the DVD player come on when you close the drawer with a CD inside and does the speed of the flashing increase after a few seconds of activity?

There was a Windows update recently that when installed modified the auto-run functionality. Did you install that update?

I did the research and found the update you are talking about, I think...is it KB971029 2/10/11?

If that is the one, yes I did download that update.

Any way to fix this?

The CD Should open from computer, click start, click Computer, when that opens double click on the CDROM Drive, if it does not open from there then most likely a problem with CD or drive.

If you are on Windows XP or Windows Vista and want to enable AutoRun once again, download this tool available from Microsoft's website. That way the cd will play when you insert it (If the CD is any good) instead of going to computer and double clicking the CDROM Drive

In case you were wondering why, Microsoft decided to disable automatic execution of files via AutoRun or AutoPlay because of malware that has been targeting such methods.

Click the link I provided, then save it to the desktop, once there double click it and RUN it.

Zep thanks for the link. I had tried over a period of time to download the fix it program but for some reason it would not install...I kept trying without success and then got sidetracked on the the holidays and other family matters.

So this evening I was looking back to see what I had tried in the effort to fix the DVD reader so I could play movies for my little ggranddaughter and I tried again to install the fix it program a lo and behold it installed! I have done a lot of hp updates since then and i think that probably had something to do with it. I tried playing a movie and it worked....thanks again and sorry it took so long to let you know how things worked out
