My computer won't stop 'thinking' when my desktop is up

I hope I can word this so that it makes sense! I have a Toshiba Satellite L305, running Vista. When my desktop is up, the circle is constantly "thinking" It seems to be trying to connect to something all of the time. It will only connect me to the internet through Internet explorer. Once I am on my Verizon home page, I can go to other sites through the Verizon search bar, and I get the normal cursor, no more "thinking" circle. When I do a CTRL/ALT/DEL it shows no applications running. I did a highjack this and got this:ogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Nothing in the log that relates to the issue you describe, it's a normal looking log and no Malware either.

When did the problem start?

I see a few non-malicious entries which may be running in the background. Have you taken a look at the startup report?

Also, have you tried a Safe Mode start, and compared the response?

I had to google Tillandsia, to see what you were refering to! I really know nothing about air plants. Every so often, one will mysteriously show up in my yard, and I purchased one from a local green market, a few years ago. It has multiplied, several times over, and blooms beautiful, tiny red flowers, once a year. I'll take a pic next time... I think in spring. I'll also check to see if it still has the ID tag hanging on it, when I get home from my trip. Tkanks, Neon... I hope to find a way to purchase that lot myself. All it takes is a bunch of money that I don't have! It isn't actually on the market yet, so I have some time. My neighbor is in his mid 80's, and is having trouble keeping up with the gardening. I help out where I can. The lot is inbetween our two houses, and he would love for me to have it... For a price! He's kind of waiting on me, while I'm stalling. It will break my heart to see it go to someone who will build a house, as it was one of the things that attracted me to my home, 14 years ago. It's a bit of stretch to say that repeat blooming roses don't go dormant. While modern roses, specifically hybrid teas, do have some evergreen parentage, multiple thousands of generations later and with continual diverse genetic input, that heritage is slight (btw, it is generally considered that the remontant characteristics of modern roses is due primarily to R. chinensis, which is neither tropical in origin or fully evergreen) and truly evergreen species roses tend to be a bit delicate and tender, preferring hotter climes than our own. Plants from more temperate regions, which would include most modern roses and certainly hybrid teas, do go through a period of dormancy when metabolism changes and new growth slows dramatically or even halts. This is true for evergeen plants as well. Even rose growers in extremely mild climates, like southern California, recognize the advantage of this rest period of dormancy or semi-dormancy and encourage their roses to enter this state through the same practices described above. Disbudding, deadheading, allowing hip formation and removing foliage all contribute, together with colder temperatures and reduced day length, to stimulate the plants to enter this state. A period of total or full dormancy like herbaceous perennials and most fully deciduous trees and shrubs experience is not really necessary and, often in our climate, difficult to achieve, but neither do you want the plant to expend unnecessary energy trying to produce new growth and flowers this late in the season. And if for no other reason, the removal of foliage both from the plant itself and from the ground and surrounding area will go a long way in reducing the overwintering of disease problems.

Thought I'd update. Got Windows installed without a hitch, Dell talked me through it. I debated whether to put Win 7 in since I was starting from scratch but worried some of my software might not work Everything went well except I couldn't find drivers for some things such as my wireless adapter so couldn't get on line. Called Linksys and they spent over an hour trying to get the driver in and finally did. That was the best part, finally getting on line and getting hit with a zillion MS updates. I have misplaced or lost some software. We moved here in March and I could not locate my Office disk, wireless mouse/keyboard software and a few other things, might have gotten lost in the move. I'm most concerned about Office 07. I paid for it. Dell says they can't help and I could try contacting MS and see if they would do anything. I haven't moved any of my files back yet. Otherwise, I feel like the computer runs better than when it was new. Things seem different, have to fool with fonts and views, but I'm amazed how effortlessly the machine runs. This computer always seemed to have a few 'glitches' but I was used to it. Now it seems so fast and smooth (of course there isn't much running on it yet.) I don't know how to thank everyone for all the support and help I received. You are the best friends anyone could ever ask for. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! Wow, there is a lot of good information here. Glad I posted with my problem, now I have something new to try out. Thanks owbist. ravencajun, thanks for the compliment but I only had the first half of it figured out and cboy came to the rescue and helped me with the last half of it. I can't take all the credit. "Smiles" Then zep516 came in catching the fact that System Restore wasn't working right and gave me great information on how to correct that. This was the first time that I've had problems with my desktop, but I have changed the backround on it before and I remembered that and I thought why not check it out and see if I could get it to change and that is when I discovered that the backround had been changed and all I had to do was to put it back like I had it, but then I didn't know how to get the icons back and that's when cboy posted the solution for me. If that ever happens to me again I will know exactly what to do. Thanks owbist for telling me how to move the icons down to the taskbar. I will try that on Wednesday, I will have more time to try it out then. thirdfrt!!!

These type of news start pages I avoid, they can have a lot of stuff to load on the page and become very slow.

You can change the start page (Home Page) temporarily to Google.com and see if that helps.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

I am with zep on this one if you try to use a home page that is heavy in loading news or sites you will certainly get the loading circle while it tries to access and load all those sites info. Try using a plain vanilla home page for a while and see if that helps.
