Computer won't load

HP desktop -1 month out of first yr. warrenty

I was reading a word document, my mouse,(curser) wouldnÃ¯Â¿Â½t move, then went dead- I tried my keyboard,, alt+Clrt+Del to bring up the task mgr.- to end task, keyboard dead. Turned off the power. Powered up again, Monitor came on briefly when I manually turned it off then on again- said no signal and went back to sleep. When the tower powered on, it didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t seem to load anything. Checked all connections and nothing was loose.

Whenever you have multiple component failure like that when last week everything was working fine, it's usually a bad power supply.

Yes I have had power supplies go bad and do very similar things. Luckily it is easy to replace or have replaced and not terribly expensive, but I would definitely contact the manufacturer and try to get it repaired or at least pay for part of it.
When replacing if it is the power supply it is always best to go bigger than what came on it.

Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

The label says it has 512 MB of memory. I'm not sure which memory this is referring to, but if it is the RAM on the motherboard, it could use an upgrade. Windows XP likes to have 2 Gigabyte (2 GB) or more. You are using a wireless router on a DSL sevice. Make sure that your wireless router is secured so that someone else within range can't horn in and ride piggyback on your connection for free. The more computers using the connection, the slower it gets for any one computer. The next potential bottle neck is the DSL service. If this is over a phone line, it may not be a large jump in speed over a standard dial-up service. A good connection does have marked improvement in speed, but a troublesome connection looses much speed advantge. Consider taking the computer to a shop or friend and try on their lines. Another problem, if over a phone line, is a noisy line. Thw phone company can test your phone line for quality. Make sure that you tell the technicam that this line will be used for internet service. If over a phone line, another bottleneck can be the phone company. It may not have installed equipemnt capable of high speed data transfer. If you have a friend who has a high speed cable connection with a wireless router, you may want to try your computer on his connection. Have the computer checked out at a computer shop to discover if it is the computer or the DSL service to your house.

I've tinkered with several bundled software packages and they are far from junk. Yes, if a user has too many installed they can step on one another. However, to use a broad paint brush to condemn all applications and declare card readers the absolute messiah to photo transfers is a stretch. In all, a card reader is a quality viable option. In my mind what bundled software actually are are self-serving for the manufacturer, "lite" applications and redundant. I've only ever kept one which I found easy to use to stitch panoramas. For most amateurs like myself free applications like Irfanview and Picasa are more than adequate. Installing the camera driver is absolutely a minor task and historically safe. In fact, it is not harder than installing any other driver. Since as a reader I had no knowledge to the experience and the financial well-being of the poster as I normally try to do stayed within the parameters of the thread rather than forcing the writer off the original question. Though I have God knows how many card readers on the front of my system I personally find for my use connecting the transfer wire faster and easier. 1-2-3. Nothing to it. DA

What model number for the computer? As noted it may well be the power supply. Be sure as RC notes to buy bigger and a known brand. Weight and quality are important in power supplies

Take a look here for some guidance BUT do not let the jargon of images confuse you. As this computer is only a year old you are better to buy something that will last and at least 350 watts in size.

You could change this yourself in 15 minutes if you are comfortable removing the side panel. Just Google how to change a power supply.

Sounds like power overload to me...remove power cable, mouse, kb etc. then remove Mem card/ Ram..leave out about 5 or more mins..replace mem sticks...plug in elec. cable add other, and hit start.. won't hurt to try this has worked for many..

Thank you sofaspud, RC, obwbist and susiq07. I may yet need a new power supply.
However, the suggestion that it may be a power overload might have been the case.
Last night, my son removed the power cable for a few minutes. He tried booting it in safe mode, but nothing happened, He was able to bring up the HP Into. screen and I got to safe mode from there and did a "repair" and system restore and so far everything is humming along.

If it was a power overload..what caused it? How do I avoid it?

It is never a good idea to shut your PC off at the button on the front of the tower..you should always do a proper shut down... that messes with the power/cpu

It would not be a power overload but a power failure. Power supplies (P/W) have at least 3 different voltages. 12 volts for the fans and hard drives. then 3.3 or thereabouts depending on the computer age and somewhere around 2 or less for the memory.

Are you comfortable entering the BIOS? If so start the computer and as soon as you hear the beep tap the F11 button. Once the BIOS is opened use your arrow keys to navigate to the screen providing the power info (scroll left to each screen and you will see where to stop hopefully). Then check the voltages listed, there might be 2 sets listed, the correct one and the actual one for your machine. These are allowed to vary by 10%. You will see the instructions to exit without saving any changes so just follow along (not sure with HP myself)

Thank you Owbist, My son says that is a good suggestion, he says I can do it myself, but I just have to get up my nerve.
