Computer won't recognize my camera

For some reason my computer won't allow me to dowload pictures off my camera. When I plug my camera into my computer nothing happens.

What could be wrong??

The first question is - did you turn the camera on? It needs to be on to be recognised.

What make of computer, what operating system and what make of camera?

jclay your hydrangeas are beautiful! I imagine you are both right, I need to use some compost. Luis, I had another hydrangea that someone gave me as a gift. It was pink, I planted it and it took 10 years for that one to bloom again. Now it's growing slowly but has lots of blooms. So perhaps my yard needs a major work-over! I am in zone 7a. Last winter had a couple of 20 degree days but not that many, and I don't remember any hard frosts in the spring. I don't believe deer are eating the blooms, the plant really looks great, other than no blooms, and I have never seen any buds. This shrub gets full sun from about 8am to 4 pm. I haven't tested my soil, but I am pretty sure I added absolutely nothing when I planted it. As a matter of fact, a few years after planting, I had to add more top soil because the roots were starting to show. That was about 6 years ago. I live in northern virginia, so I believe our soil is fairly acidic. Thanks so much for your help! Can anyone tell me how to add a pic to my post?

Take a look at the rather long article linked below, it may offer some help. When reading this take a closer look at the photo where he/she has the front connector plugs that fits on the motherboard and his hand showing. You see those 2 connectors off to the left? There really seems to be no place for those on some motherboard yet they need to be connected. A separate card reader that plugs into USB would be a good test actually. You can get them for cheap on Amazon, Newegg, and Ebay. [ If you're really thinking about buying another computer, I was going to say you might want to wait for Windows 10, as it will no doubt be an improvement over the confusing interface of Win 8. (The version name of Windows 9 is going to be skipped) But that is reportedly not going to be released until late 2015 . So I'd make sure I was at least getting a free upgrade to Win 10 when it arrives. ]

So you have 512 megs of RAM, 448 for regular use and 64 dedicated to your video. No problem. You say the C:\ drive has 66% but is that 66% used or free space? Either way it is good but hopefully you mean there is 66% free space on this drive meaning you can still add more stuff. You should never fill a hard drive more than 75% - or keep a minimum of 25% free space for the swap file to work efficiently. You never mentioned what size the hard drives were. Any time your question seems not to be understood try asking again but phrase it differently, someone will catch on and ask questions giving you the chance to answer those question and then understand you computer problem. Don't let that stop you from asking. Same with online technicians, some are great and others not so great. Sometimes it is luck if we catch the right person who has encountered the same problem before or knows exactly where to look in his or her manual. All professional tech support staff keep manuals handy for reference. Now the pictures. Most internet providers only allow a certain amount of data in each email. I keep all my emails under 6 megabytes and that works for me, none get returned for being too large. What size were the 4 photos the tech support placed in a folder for you? If they total under 6 megs you are good. You can always send one photo per email too, yes it is a bit of work but if that is what you need to do then it will be worth it. Hover your mouse over each photo and it should show the file size for you. When you are sending photos do you 'attach' or 'insert' your pictures? Either way works but it is easier to attach so you can write your text without the pictures being in the way. However if you need to explain each photo then insert one and add the text underneath. Repeat for each photo as needed. The 'insert' applies to Internet Explorer, I see no way to insert a photo in Yahoo mail. The tech helped you remove programs from your 'Startup', that is good because those programs are no longer running in the background using up your valuable resources. You have rebooted with no problems since then haven't you? Please do not mess with Windows Messenger, just leave it there. This is a part of your Windows and you really do not want to mess with that. I too would like to remove it but life is simpler by leaving it alone.

I believe that the printer and camera must be capable of using Canon's PictBridge, the software that is able to transfer the images from the camera to the printer and computer. If you haven't done so, suggest having the camera plugged in to the printer and turned on before booting the computer.

I have a Canon and don't use Pictbridge. From my understanding Pictbridge is only for direct printing with a compliant printer rather than downloading and then printing.

This member mentions "download" and "plug my camera into my computer".

Here's my question, If the camera came with a driver did you install it. A driver is a very small application that allows the camera and the computer to "talk" to one another. Do not confuse this with the bundled software that came with the camera for working with your pictures. The driver more than likely is on the same disk that the software is on and could be a separate installation .

If you are not sure if you require one, have one, or if you installed it take a few moments and review your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website. I think that will clear things up for you. Normally installation of the driver and the bundled software, if so desired, is easy. really easy.

YOU do NOT need to have your pc recognize your camera to get your pictures onto your pc, using software that came with the camera is not necessary. You have the memory card that your pictures are stored on, remove it from the camera, insert it into a memory card reader that is either on your pc or that you purchase which plugs into a usb port on your pc. This way you do not have to install more junk software on the pc and you do not have to have your camera on wasting the batteries. It will work with any camera that uses memory cards.
there is another thread on here that we just explained all of this to someone.
Every camera will come with different software, you do NOT need that junk, we keep running into problems caused by conflicts with that kind of software.

I've tinkered with several bundled software packages and they are far from junk. Yes, if a user has too many installed they can step on one another. However, to use a broad paint brush to condemn all applications and declare card readers the absolute messiah to photo transfers is a stretch. In all, a card reader is a quality viable option.

In my mind what bundled software actually are are self-serving for the manufacturer, "lite" applications and redundant. I've only ever kept one which I found easy to use to stitch panoramas. For most amateurs like myself free applications like Irfanview and Picasa are more than adequate.

Installing the camera driver is absolutely a minor task and historically safe. In fact, it is not harder than installing any other driver.

Since as a reader I had no knowledge to the experience and the financial well-being of the poster as I normally try to do stayed within the parameters of the thread rather than forcing the writer off the original question.

Though I have God knows how many card readers on the front of my system I personally find for my use connecting the transfer wire faster and easier. 1-2-3. Nothing to it.

What few times I've used usb wire to transfer digi cam pics no driver was needed. Usually just open most any graphic program and choose File/Import Twain

I don't know about your specific camera, but on one of my digital cameras you plug the cable into the camera and the USB end into the computer. Then the screen comes on and displays "computer," but you have to press the select button on the back of the camera for it to actually connect and be recognized.

Kudzu made me think of something. On my Canon as you look at the back of the camera in the upper right corner there is a slide switch which must be repositioned (down) when you download pictures. Does your model have this slide and did you reposition it? When completed you have to reposition it (up).

I spent a good week off and on trying to "fix" the software to get my computer to recognize my camera. I finally went and got the USB cable that came with the camera and that did it! It worked right away. As an aside I used the Nikon cable on my Canon and it got the computer to recognize it too.

Some Canon Cameras need to use the USB Cable that came with the Camera, other Look Alike Cable may not work. I'm on my 4th Canon Digital Camera and I did run into this back when I tried to hook the camera up directly. Now I just take the SD Card out and plug it into a Card Reader (built in on most Laptops and one I installed in my Desktop).

I find the Software that comes with my Canon Cameras Very useful. Most of the time they are Lite Versions, but I do like using them much better than Irfanview. Don't take this the wrong way, I find Irfanview to be a very useful program also!
