About your picture sending.

Do you resize your pictures before you send them?
They are toooooooo huge to send as right out of the camera.

This comes up when you have your camera or other external device attached to the computer via a USB port. Quite normal. But why don't you download all the photos off your camera onto the computer? This way all the photos are ready for you to do whatever you want with them plus if you have deleted the photos on the camera memory card it too is ready for action with maximum space available.

It probably/possibly is to do with the issues you had last week.

You have commented in the past about having a "small" computer. What does that mean?
What make and model of computer do you have?

click Control panel
click System
Now near the bottom of this smaller window it will tell you how much RAM or Memory you have. How much does it say? It will also tell you the processor (CPU) size, what is it?

Close all that
Click Start
click My computer
Now another window appears, how large is your hard drive and how much free space is listed there?

Enquiring minds need to know this stuff please.

Ok- I'll tell you what I found out.
First, owist, I have an Acer TravelMate 2430. 1.60H, and 448ram. C drive 66%, D drive 99% It is 3 years old.

Now- I can call tctwest during the day when I have a problem. I tell them what is happening, and then they tell me what to do. It works sometimes, other times, maybe they don't understand what I am trying to say, just as there are people here who don't understand what I mean.

When I called, the first person told me what to do- of course it didn't work. I called back, and this time, I got somebody that got onto my computer with me- he saw that when I tried to send pictures with Yahoo Mail that it did not work- the page would not connect/load that started the process with 'do you want to make your pictures smaller".
He did not know why it would not load- he tried a few times'

Then he went to Outlook Express and showed me how to take the last 4 pictures, download just those 4, put them in a folder, then forward those to the person.
It is a longer route to do it this way- I think there were 10 steps, but they went! That part is success!

Why won't Yahoo Mail download to send the pictures?

He had me get rid of 'programs' that load at startup- said there were too many.

We looked at the Cand D drives to see if they needed to be defrag- no they did not, because 'raven..' had me defrag last week.

It made so much difference to have someone on the phone, looking at my computer at the same time!!

I liked sending pictures through Yahoo better, as it was so much quicker though.

After taking some programs off when starting, there still is Windows Messenger. I don't use it. Does it have to be there for IM on any site- (is it needed to get IM from anywhere?) Can I get rid of it when starting the computer? If so, how do I get rid of just this one?

Having a computer person right there, is just like the physical therapist= I wish I had them wherever I go!

So you have 512 megs of RAM, 448 for regular use and 64 dedicated to your video. No problem.

You say the C:\ drive has 66% but is that 66% used or free space? Either way it is good but hopefully you mean there is 66% free space on this drive meaning you can still add more stuff. You should never fill a hard drive more than 75% - or keep a minimum of 25% free space for the swap file to work efficiently. You never mentioned what size the hard drives were.

Any time your question seems not to be understood try asking again but phrase it differently, someone will catch on and ask questions giving you the chance to answer those question and then understand you computer problem. Don't let that stop you from asking.

Same with online technicians, some are great and others not so great. Sometimes it is luck if we catch the right person who has encountered the same problem before or knows exactly where to look in his or her manual. All professional tech support staff keep manuals handy for reference.

Now the pictures. Most internet providers only allow a certain amount of data in each email. I keep all my emails under 6 megabytes and that works for me, none get returned for being too large. What size were the 4 photos the tech support placed in a folder for you? If they total under 6 megs you are good. You can always send one photo per email too, yes it is a bit of work but if that is what you need to do then it will be worth it. Hover your mouse over each photo and it should show the file size for you.

When you are sending photos do you 'attach' or 'insert' your pictures? Either way works but it is easier to attach so you can write your text without the pictures being in the way. However if you need to explain each photo then insert one and add the text underneath. Repeat for each photo as needed. The 'insert' applies to Internet Explorer, I see no way to insert a photo in Yahoo mail.

The tech helped you remove programs from your 'Startup', that is good because those programs are no longer running in the background using up your valuable resources. You have rebooted with no problems since then haven't you?

Please do not mess with Windows Messenger, just leave it there. This is a part of your Windows and you really do not want to mess with that. I too would like to remove it but life is simpler by leaving it alone.

Steps to Disable Windows Messenger

* Click the Start button
* Click Run
* Enter the command "services.msc"
* Click the OK button
* Find Messenger in the services list and double-click on it
* Change the Startup type to Disabled
* Click the Stop button
* Click the OK button

owbist- Ok- I will leave the Messenger. The 66% and 99% is what was free. How do I find the size of the harddrives- it wasn't by start/control/systems, was it, because I did see any other numbers.
I only used 'attach file'- I didn't know you could insert. One small thing at a time!

I see that my pictures are different 'sizes'- most are about 1.13-1.19 MB in size- but there are 2 that are 13 and 19MB- how do these have so much more. I took them with the same camera, same size? They are both outdoor. What causes such a drastic difference in size of the file? I just can't get back to the place that would let me 'make picture smaller'. It was there last week....:( The tech also said what you suggested- about 6MB at a time to send, because there is some MB used when you type in a message.

Can you think of any way to get back to sending the pictures by Yahoo, where it will make them smaller, so I can send?

C= 25.1 total, 16.3 free, 'D'= 25.8 total, 25.8 free

Ah great, Zep gave you the way to disable Windows Messenger, another thing now out of your way.

Let's deal with your photos. I have no idea how you could possibly have those 2 very large files, perhaps you did a save on them at some point and they increased that much. They probably were not that big out of your camera. Anyway we can soon fix it.

So we will make them smaller using Microsoft Paint because that comes with your computer
Click Start
click All programs
click Accessories near the top
slide over and down to click Paint or MS Paint
now you have a new window showing

Click File
click Open and a small window appears with the My Pictures folder showing I think
find one of the large photos
double click on it to open it

Now your screen is filled with this huge photo
click Image at the top
click Attributes in the drop down menu
now you have a small window with 2 sets of numbers in white boxes
(be sure the dot is in Pixels and in colours)
change the larger number to 1024
change the smaller number to 768
click OK
click File at the top
click Save
You should now have a photo about 2 megs or a little more perhaps.
If this is still a bit big do the above steps again but use 800 and 600 as your numbers and it should be close to the other photos you have.
Do this for the second photo.
Done.

Those numbers - 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600 and standard photo sizes. When hovering over your other photos you might see that listed along with the size.

Try this. Select a photo and right click on the file name or photo itself then click Properties. In the new window click Summary at the top.Now you should see a whole list of information. There will be a clickable button saying either 'Simple' or Advanced' click this for more info. You will also see where you can write a title or add comments like who is in a photo and that will always stay with that photo.

owbist- Thanks- Will this make all my photos smaller, or will I have to make each one smaller that I download into the computer?

No ilmbg, this will only make any smaller if you use that method but doing them singly makes no sense. However, do you want all of them smaller? There are 2 ways to do that. One is to set your camera to take a smaller photo to start with. The other involves using a good free program to do it on the computer.

If you do not print your photos then it would make sense to lower the settings on the camera by just one notch. Get your book that came with the camera and see how to do that. It will be fairly simple to do. This will allow you to take possibly twice as many photos on the picture card inside the camera before it is filled.

If you print quite a lot it may pay to leave the camera settings alone and reduce those you wish to email using the computer. This way the print quality is higher giving you a better photo.
