Sister Wives

I read this caption today, plus I saw them on the Today show.... " Some viewers may turn the channel in horror, others won't be able to look away but TLC's Sister Wives is coming, and with it a new bunch of reality stars "

Will you watch it ? I think its a bit crazy and its also illegal, but I will probably watch it just to see what they all have to say.

Will have to see when it's on. Maybe.

Not my cup of tea, either, but why do you think it's illegal? It's not--technically--since they don't legally marry their harems (for lack of a better word). The men may marry the first wife, but not the ones following. There's really no law against having a bunch of mistresses living in your home, I don't think--and from the legal standpoint, that's about what it boils down to.

This isn't on my "things to watch" list. :0 )I'm more of an Amazing Race or Survivor type. Antiques Roadshow or Nova. :0)

Since Kody is *legally* married only to Meri, then my guess is that he might have his name on her checking account, so in that sense he "contributed" to the buying of @ least that one house. I thought there was a bit of hostility displayed in the interview also. But realistically I can't imagine *any* 4 women getting along all lovey-dovey all the time. That's wayyyy to much estrogen for that to happen. I wonder about all this on-going drama over trying to find 4 houses (or lots) side by side. I understand the need & desire for it. But we're talking Las Vegas..... one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. It's hard to imagine that this has played out for so long. One thing that I get impatient with is women crying on TV .... and they are trying to sop up their tears with their fingers & not mess up their make-up. GET A TISSUE! These 4 all did the requisite boo-hooing,,, it's part of the shtick ... & not a one had a freakin' TISSUE!!! /rant I kinda like the characters. They all seem like good & genuine people. I cannot imagine sharing a husband, tho'. ~~shudder~~

Oh, I'm right with you about Meri--she went from my fav, to last on my list. I feel so bad for Robyn--I'm sure she figured by now, she'd have had a baby for Meri and would be about ready to get started on her own second with Kody. But Meri's got everyone waiting on her inability to admit she really doesn't want another, she just wants the ability to whine that she can't have any more of her own. And Robyn's got the wrong idea about that jewelry thing. There's no way that is going to be the business that supports the family. They NEED to be diversifying. It's okay one or two of them run the jewelry thing, and another one or two go into real estate. It would be nice if Kody found himself a career (does he really do anything?). And what happened to Meri's plan to work with at-risk youth?

Susan, they were building the 4 houses at the end of last season, so I would guess they've moved into them. If I recall correctly the oldest son had chosen to go to college at UNLV ( there in Vegas).

I watched it....with only 1 eye on the tv. Won't again. If for no other reason, I couldn't stand to be in that kind of life because there is sooooo much whining, whimpering, sniveling, simpering, & overall boohooing drama amongst all those sister wives. Nails on a chalkboard! I mean ....whining about a birthday??? Get real! And with dozens of kids now one of the 5 wives wants to adopt! Ahhhh...geeze! Live the life if ya wanna but polygamy on tv has now "jumped the shark." Enough already! TLC can put this one & the Browns to bed.

I didn't get a chance to see it this morning. Unfortunately these groups often run into trouble, when they seek help in the form of welfare, and many times underaged "brides" are given away. Not all of them though. I doubt I will watch any of it as I am not a reality show fan.

The last thing that was said to them at the end of the interview on the Today show was " and you know its illegal", so I thought they should know. I will watch almost anything, but this wasnt on my list either, until I saw the interview this morning, and now I will probably take a look at it when it comes on.

I watched a little of it last night. Have it taped so I might skim-watch it later on. From the little I've seen, it's not going to hold my interest at all.

The husband and four wives were on Larry King last week. If the show is as boring as they were, I don't think there'd me much to see.

I won't know what I think unless I watch it, so I watched it last night. It was on TLC at 10pm. Didn't see the Today show.

I can't imagine why any woman would think this is a good idea, but they did explain from their standpoint why they like it.

He, I believe his name is Corey, or Cody, is married to the first three women, and he is "courting" a fourth.

    Strange.

But I'll watch it, at least for awhile, out of curiosity.

I fell asleep. Had planned on watching to se if it might be interesting. In my opinion, these guys can scream, at the top of their lungs that they live this way for religious reasons, we all know why they really do it. But for the life of me I can't figure why the women do it, except for help with the housework , maybe.LOL The whole thing is ICKY to me, and so many of them are living off the welfare system, which means you and I pay for it. Also there is the thing of these dirty old men 'taking' the young girl as one of his wives, and they don't have a say in it, and running off the boys when they near courting age because they are competition for the young girls. Like I said......ICKY!

They were all on The Joy Bahar show last week. When asked about the legality of their 'marriages', he explained that he's legally married to wife #1, and 'married' via a 'religious ceremony' to the other three, and the last 3 are not recognized by the state, so basically, he's just shacking up with the last three.

Joy asked who gets his money when he dies - he stated that the first 'legal' wife will inherit his assets, but stated she would be 'fair' with the other three.

When Joy tried to quiz them about their sex life and sharing him with each other, HE ANSWERED - that's private - we won't be discussing that aspect of our lives.

As far as I'm concerned the type of religion they are following is a cult, period. They never address one question (probably because most people are interested in the sex aspect). What becomes of mis-matched number of boys who grow up to be men who are not in this type of arrangement?

    Think of it.

There is, in general, about the same number of boys born as there are girls.

Boys and girls grow up. Men take a wife, then take another and another and another. I hear they brow beat those boys in their adolescent years and "get rid" of the ones who talk back and question "outside" ways of life. If a boy seems like he's going to be trouble, he's eliminated. If they are obedient, the best get to follow in Dad's footsteps.

I have a problem with people like this living off of welfare and food stamps and I don't respect the idea of people living for the future so disproportionatly. You know, in the end it's all about how many times they procreate and how many souls they can bring before they get to the highest level of heaven. What a waste! No, I won't watch.

I have not watched this show, but usually in these cults, the boys are expelled from the family and the community at 12 to 14 years old. The old, married men do not want any young competition for the young girls, so this is a typical element of polygamist communities. Can you imagine doing that to your son? It is more than criminal.

I fell asleep while watching it, so I missed some things. What I am confused about is the soon to be wife #4. He stated that he had been courting her for 16 years. Where the heck does this guy find the time?

When he and the 3 sister wives were telling the children about wife #4, I thought it was sad when his son said to him "Go get em Tiger".

  • lilliepad

I watched it.Thought it was crazy.Especially how the wives all claim not to be jealous when one is with him and they aren't.The first wife did admit that she was jealous at times but was trying to overcome it.I'll probably watch it again out of curiosity if nothing else.I do think it is great that they can all get along and that the children are so close. As far as being "strange" I guess it isn't to someone who has grown up in that situation.
Matti-I think they said there hasn't been a "courting" in 16 years.I think he married all three of the wives within a short period of time and hasn't courted anyone since.I understood that he has only been courting wife #4 for a few months.

This guy is living every man's dream - multiple sex partners. (Yes, I know it's not your husband's dream. But it is what nature encourages - men to spread their sperm. Of course most men have been civilized out of that mindset.) Hopefully!

And these women fall for it! Sad...

He married #4 in May. The shows were filmed before he married her. So yes, there are 4. I haven't watched it and most likely won't. It is the cover story on People magazine this week (yeah, I know ... like THAT is the official word! Ha!).

coffee, I'm with you on this. I think the porno multiple partners is exactly the same thing - I wonder why that was okay to so many people? Maybe because no one wants to think about homely folk having sex.

I'm a mormon, and even with our history, this stuff makes me totally sick. It just feels so anti - family values to me. I couldn't watch it or I'd get mad.

One thing I can't figure out is what happens when all the children grow up and eventually leave the house. Will all the wives still live with him when there are no children left at home to raise, and they are past their childbearing years? Will he just enjoy his older years hopping from one bed to another? My guess is that he will just keep taking on more new younger 'wives' and procreating so that in fact, the home will never be childless.

I just read an article on the internet that said they are investigating them....

What I don't understand is why any woman would want to share her husband with anyone else.....None of them are real beauties but all four of them are reasonably attractive. So I wonder if it isn't something that the women themselves think they need.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sister Wives Investigation

I think polygamy is the only life these women have ever known or at least it is for two of them. Wife #1 was the catalyst for getting her husband on board with the lifestyle and even found the other wives. I'm sure she didn't have to twist his arm too hard lol.

I have to admit I watched the show just out of morbid curiosity and for the life of me I just don't get it.
The thought of my DH kissing another woman makes my stomach turn much less bringing home another wife and having children with her.
I did see on MSN today that the Utah police are now investigating the family.

    coffeemom!!! LOL Good one!

I watched the show. I love to see how different people live their lives. I think firemans wife had a good term "morbid curiousity"!

Frankly, despite their "weird" situation, they mostly seemed happy. Are the wives fooling themselves? Probably? What will all those kids grow up to become?? Who knows? There seemed to be an inordinate number of girl children in that family or maybe it's because there is really only 1 older boy, who seemed to shoulder a BIG responsibility, taking care of all his siblings, because his mom worked all day 6am-7pm. So she works, the husband works. Thought the 3 different apartments in the house was an interesting idea. Wonder where #4 will go??

2 of the 3 women grew up in polygamist (sp?) families, so it probably seems "normal" to them. Had to laugh when they said "having the one husband spend time with the other wives a few nights a week, really frees up time for me!" But how could there not be jealousy of knowing your hubby is sleeping with other women each night?

In this particular case, it's not a dirty old man preying on young teen girls. He did seem like he was on uppers the way he was bouncing around all the time. The husband is around 40's and the 3 wives are just 2-3 years younger and it sounded like they all met when they were 19-20s. His 4th wife is in her 30's. Guess it's the perfect life for him?

They don't "appear" to be in a cult like the families that were found in Texas. They weren't wearing the amish-like outfits. They seemed fairly normal. If you can call that normal. The kids were homeschooled then went to a "church" school where everyone has multiple wives.

Weird, but I'll probably watch another episode, until the morbid curiousity is gone!

I saw on entertainment tonight or the insider, where he was actually only legally married to just one wife and they are investigating them. He figured they would after the show.

I'm curious about one thing. They have lived there all these years and obviously many people knew about them.

But they are just now investigating, because of the show?

    Makes me wonder.

Wait; make that two things. Wife number 4 has 3 children. Is she widowed, divorced, or just a drop out from another group?

I half-listened to the blurb on Today Show this morning. Don't have cable or satellite so I wouldn't watch it, wouldn't watch it if I had it and normally wouldn't even watch it on Today or for that matter don't watch Today! But I was waiting to see the "frugal family" come on to see what kind of BS they were going to spread. And that was as disappointing as I expected.

But it was a bit interesting when they interviewed the prosecutor who said in Utah it is illegal to cohabitate with someone to whom you're not married. I just thought, who cares. Just another example of religion causing trouble and people using religion as a shield.

    (yawn) :)

"no one wants to think about homely folk having sex."

    snork!

I caught a scrap of the news the other morning, & some legal whatnot in Utah said he doubted that he doubted anything would happen as "we don't prosecute cases like this in Utah".
