What would replace your computer time?

Kids first day of school. I have no clients today. It's all mine -

Wondering, if I weren't on the computer, what else would I be doing? And would it be more satisfying?

I suppose I would work out, hang out with friends, and maybe decorate more. These are things I did before computer took over -

I would hopefully get more cleaning done than I do. I also read way too much, but nobody around here complains, so I'm ok with it.

I would spend even more time on my 1/3 acre yard, full of flowers, than I already do.

Hi, I have gone through this myself and it stinks. I hated waking up and being unable to open my eyes due to all the crust sealing my eyelids closed. Be very careful with your towels too, because it can spread to other members of the family that way. Washclothes and pillowcases too! My new favorite mascara is Max Factor Lash Perfection, it has a new kind of brush, very soft plastic bristles that really seperate your lashes and it goes on with one coat. I think some of the other companys are coming out with the same style brush but I bought mine last fall. MF was the original one, and the formula of mascara is awesome too. I really like the new Loreal Infallible foundation. It says it lasts 16 hours, reduces signs of fatigue, and has a SPF of 18 which is nice so you don't have to appy a seperate sunscreen. And it is really nice, my skin looks great after I use it. If I need more coverage certain times of the month I use their True Match foundation for excellant coverage of blemishs. I use Clinque's blush and powder.But they seem to last forever so its a good investment. For eyeshadows i use everyones, as long as its a powder and I like the color. I've even used Wet & Wild eyeshadows , and its ok too. Plus, at CVS and Eckerds, if you don't like the product after using it, they take it back...no questions asked. For lipstick, I only use ones that last because I hate to constantly reapply. But some of them are very dry and some people can't stand that. I don't really mind it, I just use a lip balm to re-up the color and reduce the dryness. Two good ones are SuperStay lipcolor by Maybelline and Forever Lipstick which is by Maybelline too ( I think, its written so tiny I had a hard time reading it,lol) Good Luck with your pink eye! Deb

I am back with an update. I did talk to an independent computer tech person who immediately told me it was not worth fixing my machine. She felt that the problem I was having with it not turning on maybe the motherboard. I am also seeing the case suddenly deteriorating faster and faster. Opening the computer, moving it from my lap to a table, keeping the screen upright, are now something I have to think about and fool with every time I pick it up. So, thank you Sue for the suggestion but I've decided I am ready to get a new machine. I am especially anxious to get it done before it goes kapoot and I can't get my files off of it to a new machine. I do hope you enjoy your machine as long as you can though, Sue!! :-) I have enjoyed my Dell and would have been just as happy to stick with it. secsteve....the 'trackball' I refer to is the one that is part of the keyboard of my Dell. It is in the middle between the G and H keys and very small movements with the index finger make it very easy to place it right where you want it easily. The button to select once the pointer is where you want it is right under the space bar and I can reach it with my thumb without even taking my hand out of typing position. Very convenient and easy to use. On the Apple it is instead the pad which you swipe your finger across to move the pointer. The key to select it is below the pad, no where near the keyboard, so you are always having to change position and taking your hands out of typing position. I just don't know what they were thinking to let go of the arrangement that works so well with the keyboard, to adopt this style. We went in to the Apple Store last night and even the salesperson who demonstrated using the pad, didn't seem to have any more mastery over it than I was getting. Slow and awkward. They have NO computers that offer the trackball as part of the keyboard. He suggested a wireless mouse, which I think they offer, but didn't have in the store. From what I can see of it online, I am not sure how easily it will work. It does appear to be one that you don't actually move the mouse around so much as you move the tracking ball on the mouse. So that is one option. According to him, there are no manufacturers that are making the keyboard w the tracking ball any more. Hmmm...will have to check that out. I asked him, what about people who have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, which is a pretty common problem for people who type. He looked at me like I was speaking Greek. [g] Most salespeople in computer stores are young people it seems to me..lol. Of course, makes sense. He did show me some sort of contraption that holds the computer on it, with front support to rest your wrists on and that elevates the computer for air circulation. But if you are using it that way, the ergonomics are just not right for both the keyboard and the tracking pad and buttons. And if you use the pad to raise the computer, now your arms and shoulders are in a much more awkward and unsupported position. Very strange that for a company that put so much thought into ease of use and common sense applications that they seem to have spent no time on ergonomics. So disappointing! It is a little frustrating because if it were not for that issue, I may have already bought an Apple. It is just an issue that I cannot ignore. I was very impressed with everything I read on their website about their machines. Another thing I like is that they will transfer everything from your old computer to the new one for you. There is a store close by too. So, this afternoon, I am going to call Dell and see what their story is. Not what I expected to be doing this week. :-( Anyone else who has some Apple or Dell experience, I pretty much have it narrowed down to these two. Thanks pm2

Ok guys, I guess you'll really let me have it on my reply. Let me just say, I see nothing wrong with refreshing equipment every 5 years or so but sometimes, it may not be necessary. I think it all depends on what you use your computer for, to determine when you need a new one. If you're having slow boot-ups and slower browsing, I personally think you need to do a major cleanup. By that I mean getting rid of unnecessary files and disk maintenance (defragging, etc.) You also need to eliminate a lot of unnecessary routines that load up during boot up. I'd suggest purchasing a utility that does that for you and it also cleans up and repairs the registry. The best program I have found is "Fix-It Professional". It does all that in addition to virus protection with weekly automatic updates. It's only 30 bucks. I've been using it for years and the customer service is absolutely excellent and immediate. It is made by Avanquest. I think the name of the product makes it sound less dynamic. If you do a lot of gaming, well then I would say replacement every 5 years. My son won't touch any of my computers because I don't do gaming and they aren't equiped with the current "fastest and bestest". I do mostly web building with several programs for that, several graphics programs, web browsing, MS Office products (heavily in Excel and Access) and home security with web accessible video, telephone answering system, some remote applications like temperature monitoring, garage door open/close..stuff like that... on 3 computers that are 6 years old (IBM, 2 HPs). I have one computer that acts as a server for the home network that is 10 years old (HP) 3 of my laptops are 8 years old (2 Toshiba's, 1 HP). They all run XP and with the monthly and sometimes weekly cleanup, they are not much slower than when I first got them. The only down side I've experienced is internal disk size. I bought some large USB external drives solved that issue, they're cheap these days. Just a side bar on slowness.....my first computer had to be booted with a 5-1/2 inch floppy disk in the drive, which loaded the operating system!!! I still have it and yes, we're talking slow. When the 20 meg, yes meg, hard drives came with a computer, I thought....I'll never use all that space!!! I still play with DOS 5.1 on that one.

I'm coming in late, but since I just received estimates for moving, this may help. To get a sense of what it will cost to move, per pound, ask an agent for a major moving company to give you a complete estimate. It will state the estimated total weight and the estimated total charge. Just divide the price by the weight and you will be close enough. Keep in mind that the time when you want to move will make a difference. I'm moving from Los Angeles to Boston, more than 3,000 miles. There is some seasonal variation in rates; the time I'll be moving is neither the most nor the least expensive season. The destination is one that does not have any special charges. (There are sometimes surcharges for destinations that do not have about an equal amount of stuff being moved out.) The estimates I've been given all work out to slightly less than 90 cents per pound. So this means that if something weighs 100 pounds, it is worth paying to move it unless I could replace it for $90 or less, provided that I would replace it. This means that I will be keeping some heavy furniture that is in good condition and that I like. I am not keeping anything that is broken or nearly worn out, or that is no longer to my taste. For example, I will replace a sofa that is structurally sound and in fairly good appearance, but that's because I want a different style in the new place. I'm simplifying some things, e.g., I'll move only one computer printer, the newer and lighter one, even though I currently use both. I have more than 1,000 pounds of books. I'm going to pack them all myself and send them as Media Mail, which costs about 41 cents a pound regardless of the distance. If the mover's per-pound rate were 50 cents rather than 90, as it could be for a shorter distance, I probably wouldn't do this.

I only sit down to the computer to rest a little from the other things I have been doing - gardening, cooking, crafting, sewing, going. I have little computer time to replace with something else.

Like kids, I multitask, I watch a little TV at the same time that I am on the computer or I would not know any news.

If I had no computer, I'd probably go into withdrawal, and nap, or watch more TV, instead of doings things that 'need' being done.

I've tried being at home and staying off the computer for 24 hours and haven't accomplished it, so far, if all is well with computer and my ISP.

I'd like to think that I would do more housekeeping, but I would probably read more. Can't get used to housework, even after 50 years!

Reading... housework.... but I really don't spend large blocks of time on the computer (except computer for work) as it is. I mostly just pop in and out. I've tried games and gotten bored with them. So I check KT and check facebook and check the weather from time to time and that's about it.

I would probably do more yard work, sewing and reading. I still wouldn't be able to do as much yard work as I would like to do because of injuries, but I would do a lot more reading, and probably sewing.

My mouse died last week, and I didn't get a new one until 2-3 days later. Then it so happened I had 2 PT appointments which meant I didn't feel like spending time on the PC those days anyway. Napped, relaxed out on my front porch, with some iced tea, enjoying the beauty around me and an occasional neighbor stopping by to chat.

I hooked up the mouse two days ago and now I need to catch up with some email.

I don't spend a lot of time on the PC. Like soxxxx, I sit to rest from what has to be done, and read and maybe respond to a KT thread. I don't think anyone would be very interested in my hour-by-hour, or day-by-day life.

I even disabled Bookworm for the summer so I wouldn't be tempted to spend so much time there. I host a Scrabble group here at my house each Wednesday afternoon. Real people, don'tcha know!

But I sure don't want to be without a computer.

I've just been thinking about this more. There's another thread on here about how to sit at your computer. Well, since I started emailing, facebooking, and message boarding, and checking awkwardfamilyphotos, my back is a mess and I've gained 20 pounds.

I can't really say I've gained much else from all this computer time - no memories, really - and I wonder if maybe I'm ready to make a change.

Just thinking out loud. I know I'd like to get in shape, have more live friends, and not hurt any more - and I bet limiting my computer use to 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night would help.

Already today I'm doing better. Except for this post of course, LOL!

There is a bunch of weeds in the garden (some darn near as tall as I) that need pulling. They're easier to get rid of when they're small.

There are some dust critters in my house ... I thought that they should be called "dust mice" ... but I guess there's a reason for calling them (the larger) bunnies.
