E-bay selling questions

Hi guys,

I just started buying stuff on e-bay and now I'm thinking I may like to take on selling some stuff too. Can someone go over the basics. What percent do you pay e-bay and paypal, are there discount/free days, do you still pay a percent if the item doesn't sell, where do you get your boxes to mail the stuff, how do you figure out the postage in advance, do you charge handling? Any picture taking points? Do you have any other hints or ideas about being a good seller?

I know I can probably find some of these answers if I dig around on the e-bay site, but I'd sort of like to hear people's personal experiences and opinions about selling on e-bay first. Thanks so much.

Can't help you with percentages, but can offer some advice.
First look up the item that you are selling and put a watch this item on it and see if it sold. No sense selling something that no one is not buying.
Yes there is a small charge if the item does not sell. That will depend on how many photos you list etc. E-Bay will let you knopw what the charges will be and you can back out if you want.
I have shipped a saddle across the country for $60 so think small. The PO has small boxes that are $7.95 postage paid. If the item will fit in a padded envelope - that is even cheaper. Books and Dvd's can go media mail and that saves money too.
Be sure you say which payment types you accept. Yes Paypal costs money but it is convenient for me as a buyer or seller. Beware the "low baller" who might ask you to take half of what your item is worth. One offered me $25 for something I later sold on E-Bay for $60. Also I state I will not ship overseas and that gets rid of some scammers. Beware of anyone who offers you a cashiers check for more than the amount - there are fake cashiers checks and money orders out there.
Often the person says they will send an agent to pick the item up. All they want is you to cash the check and send them money. Scam scam..
I had a lady once say an one of a pair of items was broken and she would not have paid so much. I came back with - take the item to the post office because I carried insurance on it. Well she did not want to do that. Insurance is cheaper than worrying about something that is lost or missing.

Thanks, I totally forgot about insurance and agree about the overseas thing. I'll watch the cashiers check thing too; can I just do paypal only? See, there's so much to know. Hopefully, I won't get in over my head. Thanks again.

Hi...its all as they say walking a thin line, and all advertising and many many low-life do it.... I often google plants in images to see what they look like and there is always lots of pictures from GW...there not GW's pictures there the people on this sites pictures but they are taken from here and used by who ever, because if you click on some it takes you to all different sites, having nothing to do with plants...so whats that.... and the world of words...you can put anything into words and what is discribed is not what you think was discribed...has that ever happen to anyone??? and where do you go to get this undone???? to get your justice???? I agree with you what you post is yours, but there is no respect, there is no keep your fingers off others stuff........... I see lots of so called good people in church every sunday..and I guess that makes up for their actions the rest of the week..... Please don't chop me up for this post.... I grew up when there were no locks and you respected all your neighbors the ones you knew and the ones you haven't meet yet....linda

Linda, go to your Summary page and find one of the auctions this bidder won. To the right of the Total Price you should see a drop-down menu. If you've already sent an invoice for this item, the menu should include Send Revised Invoice. If you haven't sent an invoice, you should see the Send Invoice option. If you click either of these, all the auctions won by this bidder should appear on the invoice. You can then make changes to the shipping. Click on Preview Invoice to see it before sending. I usually buy used, and it's a great market. I used to end up with Half.com quite often, as their pricing was good, and never had a bit of trouble. Amazon is usually a good source, too, and easy since I'm a frequent customer, but again, like ebay, there are 'kids' or crooks who get on there and don't describe their books accurately, think they look like new when they have coffee spilled on them, or they never arrive ... I have had to file a few disputes with Amazon but it was hassle-free. Unfortunately there is a limit to the number of disputes they'll cover though. Understandable, but risky should you run out. Most of the sellers are selling great stuff and doing a good job. Some stupid packaging, though. I had a new book come through wrapped in paper, with all the corners knocked in. Aggravating. I love my books!

Yes I think you can do Paypal only, but that could cut off some buyers. If you are selling a big ticket item and someone asks to write a check just do not ship until the check clears.

I've been buying & selling about 7 yrs, and still learning. Check out ebay university, I plan to check it myself.
