SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2007

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1957

- Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2007

- School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to

jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for

traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario:

Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1957

- Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario:

Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.

1957

- Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class , sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.

2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.

Scenario:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.

2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.

2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2007- BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

This should hit every e-mail to show how stupid we have become!

And if we do not wake up and take our country back - WE will not have a country , nor a society to grow old in or for our children to grow up in

This is not far from the truth, I'm afraid. This zero tolerance has become too much. We had a case in a Mpls. suburb where a boy worked at Cub food after school, and had a box cutter in his cup holder in the car. Part of his after school job was to cut up cardboard boxes. He was about to be expelled from school, but cooler heads prevailed and he was given a week's suspension, and probation until the quarter ends.

It is really scarrie the way things are going. I sometimes wonder what I may have done that I would end up in trouble.

As far as some of the stiffness of the house, it seems a bit staged and cleaned out, to me. It probably looks more alive (or did) when the couple fully live(d) there. As the furniture being "colonial revival R us" eh, maybe. But some of it is probably real, it's on the market here enough. And it's better quality furniture than I'll ever be likely to own. These are people that don't get "bored" with things and have to "change up", there is something to be said for that. They probably have neighbors that have had 5 cheap sofas to their one in 40 years. They like what they have always liked, obviously. And I admire that.

lol ummm i already have that ladder thingie...it's in the garage waiting for the new kitchen so ds can bother dh while cooking heh heh maybe i should get it out for me! surgery went well but there are some follow up issues with bone density i'm told. i have to start sucking down calcium like a ummm calcium sucker (what eats calcium?) they also had trouble with the iv's so now both hands look as if i've been fighting off polar bears (whicj may be my new story LOL) i must say....being helpless sucks! and this kinda hurts more than it should! ok i must lay back down before nurse nasty (dh) finds me up! oh and we have checked celiac :) our sobs nurse has it so we had a fortunate leg up on that which most don't have. and we do go gluten free once every six months to see if ut helps since celiac seems to be a bit if a waxing waning (spell?) issue and our ped wants to be sure!

Thank You so much everyone for your replies. To try and answer some questions, last year she went to the registration and was told her child then would have to go to kg even though she was born 8 hours before the cut off. but the parents really felt their girl was not ready so just did not register her and sent her to a private pre k , thinking that this year they would then accept her at the school but now this year they are saying no, they will put her in grade one. she was born sept 30th and the cut off in Quebec is oct. 1st. now in Quebec we have the French boards and English boards, my daughter wanted the French school because it is walking distance from her home and most neighbors will be going there. They are a very traditional type school with strick guidelines that don't seem to be easily crossed. the English board, is much more pliable and seem to try and work with the families. Their are strick rules in Quebec about the eligibility of who can go to the English schools and luckily my gd because off her parents and grand parents English education background will be eligible. the English board is willing to accept her with open arms. The English school is about 2 miles from her house and they would bus her for kg and grade 1,2. after that she walks or we drive her. so, I know most people will say then go to the English and be done with it. 1). french school....closer, more immediate neighbors going, I think a better stronger school for education but that is probably why they are not flexible. 2) English school.....further, less friends close by on street, a more flexible program which I saw before as not as good but maybe that is better, who knows?.. 3)..... The language itself is not a problem, my gd already speaks both languages and the English school is 100 percent immersion of French for k, and grade one and two. it helps me to write all this out because I think it makes things more clearer for making decisions but I still like to hear people sake on things. again academically I am not overly concerned, it is her emotional upheavals that will give her problems. It would take me too long to try and explain her sometimes strange behaviors. Ok, now I am rambling...

lolauren, your law enforcement contacts said exactly what I was trying to say, and the term "false sense of security' is at the core of my message. My experience was such an eye-opener to me. Up until that time, as a young woman living in a city, I'd collected tips and techniques to be used in the event I found myself in a dire situation. I walked away from that horrible time thinking, "Yeah, none of that would have worked," That's when I came up with my polar bear analogy because I think it's a good visual for people. Just ask yourself how effective a particular technique would be against a polar bear, and that's probably close to the truth. I use the polar bear as my visual not only to depict strength but also because there was absolutely ZERO human connection between my assailant and me. Our eye-to-eye contact was like NOTHING I had ever, or have since, experienced. It wasn't actually like looking into the eyes of an animal, as my analogy suggests because I always see truth, empathy, a desire to understand, and to be understood when I look into the eyes of animals. It was more like a robot, I suppose, or an alien maybe. I have always found it difficult to describe, but I recognized instantly that it was something I'd never seen. My absolute takeaway was the realization that the only real defense is to prevent the situation. We cannot prevent every situation, of course. But we can prevent more than we think. A quick trip to the ATM at 9pm can probably be squeezed in on the way to work. Going out on a date with a fellow, even though we feel a 'little weird' about something, can be canceled. Etc. In this case, I do think the fact that the young man seems to have been warned off by the police is very good news. And it sounds like Lynn's daughter is staying vigilant, which is excellent.

So glad I'm not in the classroom anymore.
Last year I taught, I said NO MORE!

In our city, parents must sign a consent form before the school can administer an aspirin to a student. But the school can give condoms to students without the parents' knowledge. Unreal.

I remember when I was working in my son's preschool I wasn't allowed to remove a little splinter because it was an impaled object and we could get sued. I had to let that little child walk around all day with that thing in her hand. It has pretty much gone down hill from there.

We are living in sad times.
I graduated in 1974. I and my friends were the science nerds. We figured out how to make nitroglycerin! At least we had the common sense to not make a very big batch in the back room of the chemistry lab. We blew up a couple test tubes out in the parking lot. We were just being boys. Today we'd be arrested for terrorism.

Phyllis - I think the boy got way to harsh of a punishment. I saw bits and pieces of the story and from what I can tell, nothing should have happened to him. It was in his car.

Only about 15 years ago when my daughter was 5 in summer school, she came home and told me about a kid having a "big gun" on the bus. I got alarmed, naturally, and called the school. Come to find out, the kid was bringing his gun in for a hunter safety class and apparantly all the kids did that then. The gun just needed to be stored in the front by the driver. Today that would NEVER happen. Instead, they would jail the poor kid.

Although that may be an extreme example to some, it shows what can happen in 15 short years.

I graduated HS in 1972........had I and my freinds been caught for some of the pranks/jokes we played back then with today's "no tolerance" rules....we would have never graduated!!!!!!

Raised 2 sons attending the Clark County School District from 1986-2002. I had my share of "Required Parent Teacher Conferences" from innocent fun to what the district thought was zero tolerance!

#1 son was caught "mooning" his girlfriend...RPC'd for 3 days.

#2 son was "hit in the head" (trip to ER) with a dirt filled Pringles can...punched the kid's lights out"....HE was RPC'd for 3 days.

#1 son (GPA 4.0) was "thought" to be skipping school as he drove away from campus to a doctors appointment...again RPC's for 3 days.

#2 son and friends "saran wrapped" a girls car on her birthday....all were RPC'd for 3 days.

#1 and #2 sons and several dozen friends "toilet papered" the front lawn of the high school in honor of winning some sports event....again I was one of the many parents accepting the usual "RPC". Funny thing....all the parents were laughing and snickering as we signed the papers.

And I am sure there were more pranks/jokes I did not know about....all in fun and part of being a high school student. I felt as long as they did not intentionally hurt someone or damage property, it was all in good fun.
