Do you get sick 'n tired of cooking or am I just getting lazy? DH has to follow a heart diet and is diabetic- even shopping take forever when ya' have to read all the labels.

Has to be low Potassium too (ever looked at amount of potassium in foods? It's in everything- at quite high levels too) Dieticians say it's really tough to feed someone with all three issues- at least anything they like.

Often think I'd rather dig a ditch than plan & cook another meal!

Suzi, that is what I am dealing with. I have really been off my Diet for the last couple of weeks, because I am just sick of cooking.

The only thing that sounds good to me is my Homemade Beef Stew. I use fresh veggies and "no salt".

Split a Subway Sandwich with Hubby. That is my grab and go food.

I DO get weary of doing the dishes, though!

Defrost - I wrote a long message this morning that seems to have gotten lost in the ether. There are a several roses that I've grown in the past or am growing now. Many of my current plants I started from cuttings, and you'd be welcome to come take cuttings if you would like. I have found them relatively easy to grow from cuttings even though I don't know much about it. Almost all my roses are relatively easy care, but the Japanese beetles bother all but the earliest. I recently read that water that has had cedar soaking in it will discourage the Japanese beetles when sprayed on susceptible plants, so I'll be trying that this summer since I have way too much field area to treat for grubs. - Rugosa Hansa (previous house along with one other Rugosa) - Lovely scent, easy care, but I didn't get good repeat. - Double white rugosa - Lovely scent, not good repeat, looks like wet tissue if it rains but gorgeous if it doesn't get wet. One of two current roses from Uncanoonuc, and it is grafted. I fight the understock to keep it from taking over. - Apothecary rose - striped red and white shrub with strong rose scent. I fight the understock (multiflora I think) which has come up 8' away from the plant. Early bloomer no repeat. Uncanoonuc. - Autumn Sunset - Gold Climber, good repeat, light scent. Another Uncanoonuc rose, also grafted, and after about 3 years didn't come back after one winter, though I don't know if it was due to voles or it was too cold. I would grow again if it were on its own roots. - Fairy rose - previous house - no scent, repeat (almost constant) bloom, easy care. - Dr. Huey - Dark red climber from understock. Not much repeat. - John Davis - light scent, medium pink, one of the Canadian Explorer roses, shorter climber. Long bloom with lighter repeats continuing. - Lady Elsie Banks - medium pink shrub, no scent that I notice. Repeats well. - New Dawn (probably) AKA George's rose since it came as a cutting from my now-gone neighbor George. Vigorous climber, very pale pink very double flowers, little if any scent (can't get close enough to smell) and wicked thorns that require that it be planted away from paths. - An unknown pink shrub rose that was here at the house when we arrived. Lovely scent, no repeat bloom. Cleanest foliage of any rose I grow, and the foliage has a light scent. Although IME own root roses don't take off quite as soon as grafted roses, in the long run, I prefer them as I don't have issues with the root stock and all my own root roses have always come back. I don't do any extra winterizing. I don't know if Uncanoonuc has any roses that are own root. I added Zepherine Drouin (pink climber) and Westerland (orange mix) this past summer and haven't yet any feedback on them. This winter will test them, but they are both own root, so I have faith that they will come through.

This is all about "performance" -- range performance, car performance, cooking performance. This is also about status, fantasy and guilt. It also might be about property value. Some very famous cooks didn't have "high performance" equipment. And it's amazing how home cooks in other countries don't have all this fancy equipment and yet manage to turn out delicious meals. I've had wonderful food cooked in a fireplace and on a hot plate. If you can cook, a high performance range makes it easier and can give you more control and eliminate a struggle against a range (which is certainly annoying). If you can't cook well, and don't learn to season, no appliance will help.

I rarely get colds any more for years. When I was teaching Sunday School I couldn't get well so I had to quit. I get my flu shot every year. I am 72 and have had type I diabetes for 60 years and at any sign of a scratchy throat I take Zicam and that works for me. My DD takes zinc vitamins. The zinc seems to work for us and my DH, too. I just saw on Dr. Oz that zinc is good for lessening the length and severity of colds ~ which is what Zicam claims. Before Zicam I used to get sick a lot. I do get stuffy nose, post nasal drip, burning eyes from allergies, especially from VOG which is rhe island version of smog only from the volcano. The neti pot helps. Vog is a form of air pollution that results when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic", "smog", and "fog". The term is in common use in the Hawaiian islands, where the KÃÂ«lauea volcano, on the Island of HawaiÃÂ»i (aka "The Big Island"), has been erupting continuously since 1983. Based on June 2008 measurements, KÃÂ«lauea emits 2,000Ã¯Â¿Â½"4,000 tons of sulfur dioxide every day. n Hawaii, the gas plumes of KÃÂ«lauea rise up from three locations: HalemaÃÂ»umaÃÂ»u Crater, PuÃÂ»u ÃÂ»ÃÂÃÂ»ÃÂ vent, and from along the coastline where lava flows from the East Rift zone enter the ocean. This year I've been sick more than anytime in my life. I'm working on my third cold, and had a stomach virus in between. I'm guessing that for the first time in several years, I'm exposed because my grandson is living with us, and he's in Kindergarten this year, and he's been real good at sharing. For the first cold, I was very careful, didn't cook, didn't clean, (the only thing good about being sick!) but it didn't do much good. Now, I'm still being careful, but not nearly as worried as I was at first, because as was pointed out, everyone got sick with the colds, anyway. DH gets a flu shot every year provided free by the city. He works at the library, so he's exposed to tons of germs. He's the only one in the family that didn't get the stomach virus. Oh yes, I get sick of everything! I don't like to do anything over & over if I can help it. Maybe its just me but the older I get the more I dislike doing the everyday things. Is there a cure for it?

I'm good and tired of all aspects of cooking-planning, shopping, cooking and clean-up. The only part I enjoy is the eating!

The part I really hate about cooking is deciding what to fix for dinner everyday. Also tend to get in a rut and fix the same old things over and over. My husband has taken over the cleaning up after dinner and I really appreciate it.

Gee now what is for dinner tonight?

Yes, I do get sick of cooking. And when I get a break from it, like on vacation, I don't feel any better about getting back to it. It takes up so much time when there are other things I would rather be doing.

I know that probably the day will come when I will miss having someone to cook for, but right now, I no sooner stumble out of bed and DH asks "what's for dinner". I hate being the one to decide. He'll cook, but forgets the niceties, like salad, veggies, etc.

Cook? What's that? I tell people that my stove died when my husband died. I don't like to cook for myself. Sometimes I will cook a lot of something and freeze most of it for later... other times I eat peanut butter and crackers. Thank the Lord for peanut butter. And I go to McDonald's and other hand-it-out-the-window places. I am a bit like George Bush the First who said he was President of the United States and he wasn't going to eat broccoli. I am 77 years old and I am not going to cook if I don't want to!!! LOL

Have you gone to foodfit.com? It gives the breakdown of each recipe. I just omit the salt.

I'm not real big on baked fish, but we are having Smoked Salmon tonight. Hopefully, I will have some left over that I can make Salmon Spread for a snack.

i so know what you mean gritty...i'm on restricted potassium, too...there are days i'd love to dive into a huge glass of oj or eat a banana...at least i can "soak" it out of potatoes, lol...(or eat processed ones) but at least it seems ot be working...my kidney doc has me on a vit d supplement...and have gone from one a day to every other dy and one big jolt once a month...not cheap though...

and sodium...you should have seen me trying to fine a lower sodium ham for lunches (primrose does make one) but all the goodies...our best friend is mrs dash...

I used to enjoy cooking so much, but dh is the world's pickiest eater. The things he likes are few and far between. He's on a sodium restricted diet too. Since marrying him 13 years ago cooking and eating the same few things over and over have been so hum drum. Cooking isn't fun anymore.

I too don't have the same enthusiasm for cooking that I used to. I used to love to cook and bake. With such an awareness now of what we put in our mouths, it has taken the joy out of eating.

I still love to bake for potlucks but I get so tired of cooking for one. I miss not having someone to cook for and someone to clean up after I cook.

I don't mind the cooking part, it's the decding what to cook that I am tired of. I admit that I can't cook like I used to because of increasing physical limitations. I reluctently am using more and more convience foods, which makes it much harder to adhere to the special diet, (diabetes/heart disease/high blood pressure) that we have been eating for 35 years now. It does become more difficult to find the right things to eat when these problems are suddenly dumped on you. Our diet adjustments came one at a time, thank goodness. I still sometimes get tired of reading labels and deciphering how much the carbs in this plus the fats in that are going to affect DH's blood sugar. We do eat a huge amount of vegetables. It would be rare to have a meal without at least 2 low or no carb side vegetables along with a garden salad and the main course. I find it hard to fill my very active DH up at times.

Yes, I'm sick of it. We have a family of 5. The kids are teenagers. Everyone's picky, including DH (who has heart disease). It just seems that we are all on different schedules, etc. I know I should just insist on us all sitting down and eating together at the same time. I admit, that has been awhile. I used to be so good at that!

Truth is, I think I'm just lazy. But it sounds better to say tired!

I like to cook most of the time, deciding what to make is what I don't like...sometimes my mind just can't think!!!

Also, I must say that deciding what to make, shopping, and preparing meals for 2 households is getting very old.
(I am doing that for my mom and dad).
