In memory of my Daughter who passed away 2 years ago today.

On This Day

Mend a quarrel,

Search out a forgotten friend,

Dismiss a suspicion and replace it with trust,

Write a letter to someone who misses you,

Encourage a youth who has lost faith,

Keep a promise,

Forget an old grudge,

Examine your demands on others and vow to reduce them,

Fight for a principle,

Express your gratitude,

Overcome an old fear,

Take two minutes to appreciate the beauty of nature,

Tell someone you love them,

Tell them again,

And again,

And again.

She tried very hard to live by this verse that she carried with her always.

That is beautiful, and I am so sorry for your loss. I have two beautiful wonderful daughters and I can't even imagine how hard it must be for you. Thank you for posting this lovely poem, Gazania.

I'd hardly blame Columbus for ALL the ways native people were hurt during the period of European exploration, conquest and subjugation. He was one guy and not even the first, as was incorrectly glossed over at school when we studied it in elementary school. I was in fact taught a fairy tale which wasn't a very good idea because it was all about Columbus being the person who "Discovered" America and he didn't even come close to the US, and all about how he "proved" that you wouldn't fall off the ends of the earth if you sailed west to try and get east, that the world was not flat. Educated people always knew the world was round using math to figure that out. They did not know how large it was, and people either didn't know or refused to believe the science back in that day just as much as today. Columbus Day coming just ahead of Thanksgiving, I also got the incorrect idea that the "Pilgrims" followed him soon after . . . based on the way we studied history in elementary school, which was basically mythical stories and craft projects. I got over that misconception but I'm a stickler for details . . . A simplified story about Columbus discovering America and proving the world wasn't flat and then a craft activity making a model of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria plus maybe a fictionalized storybook account didn't scar me for life, I learned the more accurate version in jr. high and high school. I think there was room for improvement and besides, why celebrate that one explorer or historical scenario . . . I was told that it was instituted by the Knights of Columbus to give Italian immigrants a positive spin. Nothing wrong with that, but why not then have "Immigration Day" and celebrate our diverse ethnic heritage. Also maybe "Italian American" day for those of Italian descent. Or would others get jealous? I come from a Dutch area and there are local celebrations of Dutch heritage, never really felt the need for a national holiday. And I'm fine with my Jewish side not having their holiday considered the "normal" one. Lot of energy expended and for little benefit. I would however, like to see people stop playing "Indian" during Thanksgiving and having white people go on and on about how the Indians used to live. It's sad. I participated in such educational programs, and although we went out of our way to be culturally appropriate . . . there was something weird about it. Maybe I have had my Jewish culture "explained" to me too many times by well-meaning fundamentalist Christians . . . it ends up being a tad hollow.

This is not the first time I've seen people reporting problems with getting onto this site. It makes me curious about the various ways people seem to access this site. I use the 'Your Topics' feature here and followed all the ones I like to visit, so they're all in the lefthand sidebar, and all I need do is click on one to go there. I have no problem with a forum not being accessible, unless, as I stated, the site or my internet is down. I have one forum/topic (FL Gardening) bookmarked in my bookmarks bar on my iMac desktop's Chrome browser and it always works, unless the entire site's down for some reason. On my Android mobile phone Chrome browser, I use the frequently visited sites displayed on the new tab page and this forum is the one linked. Can some of these glitches be chalked up to an older OS or not having the latest update installed? Or could it be specific to servers/devices? IOW, what kind of internet service or device is being used? All my devices are set to automatically update, BTW. I also realize sometimes it's an update that causes a problem.

All wonderful photos! Here's mine - 1960s at Busch Gardens in Tampa. They used to have a storybook village there and we loved it. I'm the one with the camera My mom sure had fun dressing us back then. I wonder if it was around the 4th of July? 😃 And I'm a bit confused by this statement: "National Siblings Day was the 10th and I didn't put Siblings in the heading so I wouldn't be found playing here because I posted this on FB too." ??? I sent that poem out one year with Christmas Cards...it's very moving and meaning to me...

I'm so very sorry for your loss Gazania, I can not even begin to fathom the pain this has caused you...My sympathies and a gentle hug coming your way...

She must have been a wonderful person, your daughter. Thank you for sharing the words she lived by. Even though she is not with us now, I'm sure the words touched someone here in a meaningful way.

What a fine credo by which to live: I'm sure that many who knew your daughter considered it a privilege to have been her friend.

I can't imagine the pain that you must have suffered, and that continues, even if alleviated some by the passage of time in the intervening period ... but in some ways our emotions don't know about time.

You are all so wonderfully kind, and your words are so comforting. You are right OJ, emotions don't know about time. There are several others here at the KT who have lost children and they know as I do that there is no greater loss. But then, I am greatful to have not lost a spouse as many of you have. That is pain that I cannot imagine living through. But we do somehow manage to go on. The love, kind words and support of KT friends helps so much.

I posted those words of "On This Day" to remind us all to hold on to the ideal of thoughtfulness, kindness, and appreciation, for those we are in contact with in our daily lives. They are indeed words to live by.
