Comments (13)Oh, those tiny frogs sound adorable. I'd have wanted to bring some home. LOL. It was 110 here today, but since it was Father's Day would you believe Jason and his Dad played golf! Well, Fred would have played no matter what!! But Jason decided to join him cause of F.D., after telling me a few weeks ago he wasn't going to play this summer. Have a feeling he won't the rest of it, LOL. He doesn't take the heat too well any more and drank so much Gatorade he wasn't feeling too good by the end of the round. I guess all those horrendous fires are nowhere near you? So devastating. Are you getting the smoke from them? I'd love to visit your basement, LOL. Must be like a grand thrift store and holiday shop all rolled into one!! hugs, Karen...See MoreToday is National Pancake Day - 2/23/10
Comments (33)Maple and 'pancake syrup' just seem to be two very different tastes. I prefer pure maple too; had it for the first time as a teenager when the cracker barrel restaurants were new to my area, and I've loved it ever since. It's also more potent, so I use less of it per pancake. At restaurants I'll eat 'pancake syrup' instead of pure maple if that's the only option, and I like ihop syrup better than the grocery store syrups. But I haven't tried many of the brands of pancake syrup, and only buy pure maple. I recently realized that my inlaws prefer eggo pancake syrup, so the next time that they visit I will buy a small container for them. But lately, I've been avoiding syrup altogether (cutting back on sugar, per the 'on a diet' thread), and have developed a taste for pancakes topped with cooked fruit--apples (like a pie filling), berries, or cherries....See MoreNational Sticky Bun Day
Comments (73)I tried posting this yesterday and got some kind of maintenance page, so I know this is late. AM, King Arthur Flour sells the cinnamon chips (see link below). I'm sure other online sellers do also, but that's where I usually get them. I've never seen them in stores. That doesn't mean they aren't available, but the selection of baking items is pretty skimpy in my neighborhood. Annie, we have 3 sugar maples along the front road, and if I were to guess, those are probably the only sugar maples for a 100 miles. My DH found them root-bound and neglected in an overgrown "no-man's-land" at the back of an old nursery owned by an elderly gentleman. I doubt tapping those would yield more than a teaspoon. Not to mention we've had almost no cold weather this winter. The crocuses are up and the ornamental cherries and plums are blooming. Hardly ideal for maple-sugaring. Thank goodness for Trader Joe's and the lovely (and well-priced) Grade B maple syrup they offer from our Canadian neighbors. Costco's I haven't tried. Since there are no children in the house, even with baking maple syrup lasts a long time here. Definitely OT, but I'm remembering the homemade pancake syrup we made when I was a child. I think it was some mixture of brown sugar, white sugar, water and Watkins maple flavoring. Karo has its uses, as Annie mentioned, especially for candy-making. I use a small amount in maraschino cherries to prevent the syrup from crystallizing and the same in some fudge recipes. Carol...See MoreFOTESS - National Weed Appreciation Day!
Comments (157)I used Micron black technical pens, and Prisma watercolor markers/pencils. I absolutely love to dabble in all things creative. Gardening included! There's always something to learn and it keeps me both curious and humble. We're supposed to FINALLY get some much-needed warm weather starting tomorrow here in Nashville, TN. I can't wait to get outside and catch up on a few things. My last-remaining hen who the kids named, "Chubby Cheeks," passed away. She was the lone survivor of a coyote attack a few months ago. I recently bought some new chicks at the co-op to raise and keep her company, but I think either illness or loneliness beat us to it. We plan to make some better adjustments to the coop tomorrow when it's warmer, and do all we can to make this next batch of chickens as happy and spoiled rotten as possible. I hope you all have a wonderful evening! Lisa...See MoreBunny
