Are you doing anything special for Old Folks' Day?

This coming Monday is a Japanese holiday that used to be called "Old Folks' Day", (and I like that name!) but the politically correct struck Japan too and the name now is "Respect for the Aged Day". It was celebrated September 15th but the "Happy Monday System" moved it to the 3rd Monday of September. Respect for the elderly and longevity are celebrated on this national holiday.

I like the Japanese culture's respect for the elders. I think our culture could learn from them. Respect is a two-way street and is earned, yes, but I personally don't see the same cultural feeling toward older people that you see in other cultures.

So, to everyone in Japan and especially the old folks, er aged, hope you have a happy, healthy holiday of peace and joy, good eats, and plenty of working toilets. Oh, and underwear of your choosing! :)

Nothing special at our house. Since we've both retired, every day is 'Old Folk's Day". We will take note and spend some time worring about our adult children, and then make preparations for the wife's upcomming genealogy trip.

I think I have to work, so I'll be taking care of mostly old folks. ( :

I place my pepper seeds on a thick stack of folded toilet paper soaked with water, in a bowl etc. covered with plastic and then put that in a warm place (on top of my computer, on top of the refrigerator etc). I cooked a set of seeds putting them in window light to warm up so I don't do that any more. The longest it took anything to break from the seed was about 8 days, and then another 5 days for seedling emergence after I put them in potting mix. Most good seed sprout in 4-5 days.

Not any one that I wear all the time. I guess I just like jewelry too much to stick with just one. But, I do have a very special ring, a silver Navajo one with a large green turquoise. DH bought it for me the day our DS was born as a remembrance of a very special day. I wore it the day his adoption was finalized. The day he started kindergarten, middle school, high school and college. I wore it to his kindergarten, high school and college graduations. I wore it the day he was inducted into the Army and to his graduation from Basic. I wore it both days that he left for Afghanistan and when picking him up at the airport when he came home on leave. I'll wear it when he comes back this time, too. Every year since we found each other, his birth mom (now a dear friend of ours) and I meet for lunch to celebrate our son's birthday in August. I've worn it to each of those special lunches. I don't wear it other days because it's so precious to me that I'm afraid I'll lose it. I plan on wearing it to his wedding some day, too. Someday I'll pass it on to him and his wife, but not for the foreseeable future. I still have a lot more "Special Son Days" that I hope to wear it to. Lynn

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. I don't care for the overly sentimental cards and it's hard to enjoy roses or other flowers if you know they've jacked the price up. We didn't even celebrate it when we were newlyweds. But...my DH's car died and after calculating the cost of repair combined with the 150,000 miles on it we opted to buy a new car. So yesterday we decided to take a nice drive into the country and made reservations at a great little pub, restaurant and brewery. It was thoroughly enjoyable and neither of us mentioned the 'Valentine' word.

growing up we always had a bbq, the whole family together. some members would go to cemetery, but as soon as any decorations were put on graves here they would be gone the next day, so we stopped. i never went anyway, honestly i think its morbid but thats just my opinion...we always looked through albums. i know it sounds awful cold but i wont go to funerals at all. i do however think its in very poor taste when families do visit loved ones and plant something that your loved ones loved like say mums, something non invasive, only to go the next day and see a huge pile of everyones plants in a huge pile...boy that makes me madder than a wet hen!!!!

I am ready to go to some rummage sales with Amber and Cheryl. They will be here soon. Then I will come back and cook some more for our family. It is 44 out this morning here in central Indiana!

Wednesday was Seniors Day at JoAnn Fabrics...and I took advantage of it. Saved $140 for being old. Of course, DH says if I save that much on a regular basis, he'll end up in the poor house! (He said it jokingly, because he knows I'm a quilting addict and can't help myself.)

Both of my grandsons recently came to visit, and that was the highlight of the month for me. They are 22 and 18, and still finish every conversation with "I Love You"...just as their father did.

yes, this old one....I am going out to dinner with friends, then to hear a group of local musicians playing their music...mostly country!

Nothing special planned for me unless I can get my car running, then watch out for this old woman! lol

Cynic, I agree and appreciate the Japanese culture's respect for the elders, and our culture could learn from them.

Really do like your toast to Old Folks' Day..LOL.

Yesterday was our 38th wedding anniversary.

39 years ago my fiance and I opened a 1973 calendar to choose our wedding date. If you've been around the KT for a while or read my profile, you'll know that I love all things Japanese. So when I saw that September 15th was Old People's Day in Japan, we went with that.

Now that I'm old, er, aged, I could really appreciate a day like that. Looks like I'll have to go to Japan to get the respect I deserve. :-)

Jodi- who really wishes dates wouldn't change to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th of some month. Oh well.

I'll raise my coffee cup to that, as well ...

... after I get done picking some tomatoes.

Oh - there aren't any to pick today - that was all done Saturday and yesterday, to take to the churches, women's shelter, Ark Aid, Salvation Army and Men's Mission. Plus son, friend, landlord and me: I usually get what's left over.

Do you think that I should jump up and dance ... or something?

A couple of years ago while visiting daughter, I bought a wall plaque for neighbours that said,

"The best way to get a man to do something is to suggest that he's too old for it".

Maybe I should give it to son and his recently-acquired ladyfriend/companion/partner ...

... for his fiftieth birthday?
