Are You Doing Anything Special for Valentine's Day?

Just wondered if anyone was doing anything special for Valentine's Day? I am going to our church's annual catered Valentine Supper tonight. It is always a nice evening.

Anyone else doing anything this weekend?

I don't have a Valentine. However, I'm going to watch the movie, "Valentine's Day." Purely coincidental, as it arrived in my mailbox from Netflix today. :-)

Sunday we have a sweetheart dinner at church, then on Valentines day I'm planning a family Birthday dinner for my dh. He'll be 50 years young Feb 14th. Guess there will be about 12 to cook for. SIL's are bringing Cake, salad and garlic bread to add to mexican casserole, Vals pizza (his fav), fruit plate my girls and I will make.

Tea Brack recipe first, then how to make homemade buttermilk. -Grainlady TEA BRACK (source: Irresistible Irish Breads - magazine article by Deborah Krasner) Brack, an Irish word for bread, is often used when referring to fruited mixtures. Tea Brack is a traditional tea bread which is an easy version of barm brack. Makes 1 loaf. 2 c. dark seedless raisins or dried currants (I use currants) 1-1/2 c. firmly packed dark-brown sugar 1-1/2 c. strong brewed tea, chilled 1/4 c. rum (I use 1/8 c.) 2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour 1-1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 1/2 t. ground nutmeg 1/2 t. salt 1 large egg, at room temperature, lightly beaten 1. Several hours or the night before baking, in large glass bowl, combine raisins/currants, brown sugar, tea, and rum. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. 2. Heat oven to 325°F. Grease an 8-1/2x4-1/2-inch loaf pan and line with waxed paper. Grease waxed paper. 3. In medium-size bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly beat flour mixture and the egg into raisin mixture just until combined to form a batter. 4. Pour batter into greased loaf pan. Bake brack 1-1/2-hours until browned and cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 5-minutes. Turn brack out of pan and remove waxed paper. Cool brack completely on wire rack. Grainlady note: I use two 7-1/2x3-1/2-inch loaf pans or three 5-3/4x3-3/4-inch loaf pans and reduce the baking time accordingly. This is a very moist bread - more currants than bread, almost. I like the smaller pans so I can cut the bread into thin slices that don't fall apart. If you make it in a regular loaf pan, the slices tend to split and fall apart. -------------------------- I use a large amount of buttermilk when it comes to baking on St. Patrick's Day, so I make a homemade version of it using information from "Natural Meals In Minutes" by Rita Bingham. I use a non-instant powdered milk, but regular commercial milk works VERY well. Homemade Buttermilk To a 1-quart canning jar add 1/2 c. buttermilk and fill the jar with regular milk OR reconstituted powdered milk. Note: You can use commercial buttermilk as the starter, or a reconstituted liquid made from powdered buttermilk, or buttermilk from a former batch of homemade buttermilk - your choice. Stir well and cover (I use a plastic lid designed to use with canning jars). Let stand in a warm place (at least 80°F) until clabbered, about 12-18-hours. Stir until smooth. Refrigerate. Grainlady note: I keep mine in my oven with the light on. The temperature at the opposite side of the oven from the light is about 80°F. You can use homemade buttermilk from a previous to culture the milk for the next batch. Just make sure you use it within 2-weeks. Older buttermilk doesn't work as well as newer buttermilk. If you've ever used reconstituted powdered buttermilk, it's rather insipid, thin, and tasteless compared to commercial buttermilk. The homemade buttermilk is more like commercial buttermilk.

On her birthday I was going to make a cake for Jan, basically because I wanted to play around at decorating a cake, but she shot that idea down saying it wasn't on her diet... Well diet be damned, I am gonna make her a valentines cake complete with red roses on it, and if she don't like it, I guess I will have to eat it to,,,,but I am going to make it anyway.

My DH and I have a fun tradition - we go into "town" for the weekend. We live in a suburb of Boston, but we spend Sat night after V-day in a hotel downtown, and pretend we're tourists. Usually we see a play or the ballet, and just walk around city neighborhoods(weather permitting) - its wonderful. After a nice Sunday brunch we go home, 10 minutes, but we feel like it was a vacation. This is a combo Valentines Birthday treat since my birthday is two weeks before. Its also good because we usually don't have to compete with Valentines day reservations.

Well some knows how crazy I was over choc cover cherries.Just ask jenni.It would be nothing for me to open a box and have it gone it mins.But When they had to place the stint in my heart I gave up the choc.But when I see it in the stores its hard to not just get me a box and think just one box want hurt me.But I know it would get me started again and I would keep going back getting several boxes.So I have been good and I just let it pass.I do snick in some M&M's now and then. Now this makes me want and I will crave the choc cover cherries.The heart dr said choc or caffine makes my heart race.

I may get out Harry's card and give to him. This is true confession time. I got tired of exchanging cards every year and then seeing about $6-8 in the trash can the next day, so one year I saved the one I got him. I gave him the same card the next year and every year since and he's never even noticed. So I guess I'll get it out again and put it on top of his newspaper for when he wakes up. LOL!

We were going to go to Arkansas for the weekend and stay at what we call our second home...a resort over there we fell in love with and then B got sick last night and is still sick and in bed....so no! LOL he feels bad about it but I told him we could just go out and eat tomorrow night or monday whenever he felt up to it...no biggy to me I know he loves me every single day! Stacy

Going for our dinner tonight, avoid the Valentine crowds on Monday. We really don't do much for this day, our anniversary is two weeks away, Vegas!! I absolutely agree about the card prices, got cards for four little ones, a sheet of stickers for each, a card for Doug, $35.00! Then of course, extra postage. I felt robbed.

No one in my life, either - I will take my Son and DIL to the airport so they can fly home and then back home to clean house.

I made a big card for my DGD (she's 20), using pictures cut from old magazines and silly captions. I haven't done this in years, and it was fun.

But if I buy greeting cards I'm likely to get them at Dollartree. Don't want to pay crazy high prices, and Dollartree often has nice ones.

Sitting here waiting for a phone call from middle child that he has finally popped the question. I think it won't happen for a few hours yet. DD and I have been so excited waiting for this day to arrive.

We will be having our day tomorrow. We got some nice rib steaks and the weather is suppose to be really nice tomorrow before the rain and possible snow next week. Suppose to be in the 60's. Anyway, having grilled steaks will be a great treat. We will eat early and watch a good movie. Maybe Dinner with Schmuks. Wanting to see that. Or something else light and funny. I have a crazy next few weeks and am just exhausted and know Monday I will be ready for bed around 7pm. Haven't been sleeping well and just worn out. So tomorrow we will be celebrating. I got him a few cards and told him NOT to get me flowers... I won't be home enough to enjoy them this week.

I bought a cute little heart shaped cake looks like a big sweetheart candy. Has writing on it too.....

DD is coming home tonight. She is performing in a local theater tonight and tomorrow so I bought one for her too. I haven't been around her on Valentines day in years! She has her own sweetheart.....

I made hubby a special meal today swiss steak with peppers,onions,in tomatoes mmmmI had 3 bites...I made it today because Monday I have dialysis no shape to cook when I get home.We use t go out but I cant eat much sooo we stay home.Tomorrow Im making him his aunts favorite sugar cakes, I got red sugar Im gonna shape them into hearts.
She use to make and sell them at amarket in pa till she died a year ago.She was like 99.

Our cafe put on a nice dinner for the community. Steaks, shrimp, lobster etc People here really like it as it is a good time to visit with everyone. Not too big of a crowd because many of the people are at the basketball tournament for District championship, which is coached by one of our friends.

Don't really observe that holiday - we like to say every day is valentines day. We did go out to dinner and a concert tonight which is kind of rare. Every one was out celebrating valentine's day with a Sat night dinner so we pretended we were too. On Feb 14 I'm leaving town for a business trip.

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. I don't care for the overly sentimental cards and it's hard to enjoy roses or other flowers if you know they've jacked the price up. We didn't even celebrate it when we were newlyweds.

But...my DH's car died and after calculating the cost of repair combined with the 150,000 miles on it we opted to buy a new car. So yesterday we decided to take a nice drive into the country and made reservations at a great little pub, restaurant and brewery. It was thoroughly enjoyable and neither of us mentioned the 'Valentine' word.

Loretta Lynn is in town for a concert today so for Dh i bought ticket. I'm not a true fan but he sure is.Just having Valentine dinner and show one day early.

I had a nice time last evening. I had roast beef in brown gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans and broccoli cauliflower salad. They also had white chicken meat in white gravy, macaroni salad, lettuce salads and probably 12 different kinds of dessert. I did not have any dessert but did have unsweetened iced tea. It was very good. We had about 25 minutes of a lady playing the piano and then three couples had to play the Newly Wed Game. I went with my two daughter's and their husbands.

not sure...I was planning on working...but now I'm not..so I can probably do something a bit special...maybe heart shaped pizzas for the boys..LOL

LOL I got Syd a new shirt...and will give the boys money (gas money)......LOL For DH I am hoping he is feeling better since we couldnt leave town and it is supposed to be nice will grill steaks, bake potatoes, and a pasta salad and choc. covered strawberries...usually we go out but he was/is sick so this may not happen either I htink it will be fun to suprise him with a nice dinner if he is up to it after work! Nope, since my foot is still healing, I haven't been getting out much. The two of us will probably go to Subway.
