Honestly I am not really surprised that the workers didn't say anything. They would have to take your word that it was a man in there and potentially risk embarrassing a customer if you were wrong. Assuming gender can lead to problems. I do think they should have waited to see though as you were clearly uncomfortable.

Also, depending where you live, it may be legal for transgender people to use the bathroom that they identify with.

I'm not saying it wasn't a man, or that it was a transgender individual, as obviously I wasn't there. Just giving some alternate possibilities.

It's a good thing you are aware of the things happening around you. Not all of us are. I'd be scared witless if I found a male person in the restroom with me. I can't imagine what the employee was thinking... to just ignore the situation. I think I would ask Corporate McD's if they have had this happen elsewhere or often and how employees are supposed to act. I also wonder if this has happened in other public restrooms. Bless my Motor home and its' private convenience as we head out on our long trip.

Didn't think of that (and probably would not when finding myself in such a situation) but you are absolutely correct.... that, or just mis-identifying gender could be embarrassing. I see my son daily (from the back) with his lovely wavy (to die for) shoulder length hair... and have to shake my head thinking it is his sister (both in their 50's). I think I need to get out more.

So you are saying that the woman went into the women's room and the man followed her into the women's room? So both of them were in there together at the same time? Humm could it have been a rendezvous? I probably would have said hello mam there is a man in the restroom with you. She may have had no idea he was in there, that would scare the heck out of me if that happened.

I was a little unsure of that detail too. Was the woman just headed in the direction of the bathrooms and turned elsewhere? Or did she go into the bathroom, followed by what you saw as another man? Is it possible this female you were following was actually the "man" you thought you saw and couldn't explain where he came from?

I would find an alleged male following a female into a bathroom to be more unsettling than an alleged male randomly entering, as that could be explained by various factors.

The female went in and then the male went in. I could see the female, about 5 steps ahead in the restroom, as he stood at the open door and turned his head to see me. And as he saw me -- our eyes met -- he hesitated for a split second and then entered the restroom.

The more I think about it, I do think it was a rendezvous even though they gave no indication that they were together. Maybe those people are known to the employees and that's why they were complicit.

Eww. A rendezvous in the McD's bathroom? I'd rather do it in a VW Bug!

I think I'd have just waited and used the restroom someplace else, or until he/they had come out?

HMM interesting, YUK if it was a rendezvous. I use the mens room (the single user ones) all the time, if I gotta go I gotta go. Here in So Cal they are making many single user bathrooms unisex ones. My DH and I were at the Staple Center in LA once, I was in the long long line waiting for the ladies room and he was in and out in a jif from the mens room. He was all in a chatter, 2 gals went in the mens room into a stall together LOLing and doing there potty time~~I told him they were smart. He said all the men were shocked. I was in a Target once where a man dressed as a woman was using the rest room, did not bother me~~the entry way to the rest room has no door, so I felt no danger. I do think in your situation the manager or someone should have spoken up and made sure everyone was OK in there~~maybe the mens room was dirty or broken? Since you spoke up and were uncomfortable and wanted to use the restroom they should have addressed it ASAP~~

Joan that was my thought too! IF it was not a rendezvous then some poor unsuspecting woman was in there in a stall with a man in the one beside her, who knows what he was doing in there because he sure was not in a hurry! Could he have a mirror looking from below? or worse his cell phone taking pictures or video? who knows. I sure would not be happy to find out I was in there with a man and the employees of the place never even spoke up about it.

IF the employees did know that it was a rendezvous that happens regularly then that is even worse! Imagine someones child going into that ladies room while that kind of action is going on.

Another possibility was that the male could have had dementia. But even so,the employee should have called out to him. I had to watch my husband when in the first stages as he would have done something like that.

Maybe the man suffers from IBS and had already gone into the men's room only to find all of the stalls in use. So, his options were to (1) mess himself, or (2) use a stall in the ladies' room.

Maybe the OP didn't see where he came from, because he came out of the men's room (where all the stalls were already in use).

I'm tall, have short hair and am usually dressed in cargo shorts,
top and a baseball cap. I've been mistaken many times for a guy when I use the ladies' room. Maybe this happened here.

Why didn't you point out to him that he was entering the ladies restroom? I would have. Especially if he looked me in the eye before going in.

A fast food owner/manager that I know, told me that it is not uncommon for rest rooms in fast food places to be used as a "place of business" for prostitutes. Maybe another possibility in this situation.

I frequently use the men's room at places like starbucks, where there is a single stool and a lock on the door for the whole room and often a line for the lady's room. I've gotten some funny looks when I leave the men's room and some guy is waiting for it, and also looks of envy from women who don't have the nerve to do it, but are stuck waiting in line while the men's room is free. I wish more places simply had unisex rooms so you could use any space that's free.

That said, I would freak out to have a man come into the women's room. there are too many violent predators looking for opportunities to victimize women for me to ever feel comfortable with that.

Probably because, as she posted, she was completely befuddled. I think I would have been, too. Most of us think of things we coulda/shoulda after the fact.

Weird situation for sure & not something I even thought of previously. Having reading the comments, sure sounds like he might have been a John.

I always, always wonder, and somewhat fear, the design of the public washrooms where we have to pass a men's washroom then down the hall and around a corner to the women's at the end.

Why don't they make women's washrooms the first one, then the men's?
Having to go around a corner out of sight of anyone is rather fearful at times. I'm not paranoid, but ya never know! It just takes one gonzo-weirdo!

Cracker Barrel usually has all of their restrooms, men on one side, and women on the other. Well, I was going to go into one, noticed it was different than other Crackle Barrel's, so headed for the correct one. Just as I was pushing open the door, a man was heading out, looked at me , then the label on the door. His only remark was, "Well, I'll be da#&%@!!"

Jas, I thought I was the only one who noticed that almost always, men's rooms are first in the line of sight or most conveniently located. Hmm, I wonder who designs them?? It makes no sense, but I see it constantly.

She was about 4 yrs old. He also went into the bathroom stall with her. When I heard them speaking they were from another country.

I have used the men's room many times when there is a long line for the women's. Like at concerts and football games or at a gas station that are single users.
Years ago, skiing at Tahoe and waiting in a long line, several of us women opened the door to the men's room and said "We are coming in". We turned our heads away from the urinals and headed for stalls.
