Help - Romance Novels and other goodies

I'm putting together a surprise box for an elderly friend that fell and broke her hip the other day. I know she loved to read the Harlequin romance novels when I was growing up. Any suggestions on titles??? Also, I'm looking for suggestions for other goodies. She's given up a lot of her old hobbies. She's not into a lot of 'stuff'. I'm trying to think of some candy or lotions or something that would be a special treat.

Thanks,

Adella

Why not a couple of the large print puzzle books (hopefully with the words on the same side as the puzzle grid) the word search puzzles are good too my mom loved them. A pack of number 2 pencils and a little hand held pencil sharpener.
You can get all these in the Dollar Tree. Does she like to listen to music>? Maybe a little portable radio with earphones.
A small pack of wet-wipes might be appreciated \ just a few ideas

Lovely to hear from you MIMS, Big changes in our life this year, my husband retired from 25 yrs in the USCG and we moved from Cape Cod Ma. to E. WA to be near our youngest daughter, we took a rental house for a year so we could really look around to find our dream retirement home. Our garden was very small this year, I didn't get to wintersow last year so I'm really craving it this year but I'll keep it light as we will be moving again. We got our first snow fall it is beautiful and so serene, it will be interesting to see what winter is like here in E.Wa. I hope you get lots of snow and have a peaceful winter. Wendey

Do we have any other hobbies?

This post has been so fun to read. I am with a few of you who say you don't have hobbies, you have obsessions...definitely describes me. I have so many interests that I can never do all of them so rotate through them (not intentionally, I just get bored and have to move to the next interest frequently). am usually active in 3-4 of them at a time. I have been told more than once that I was born in the wrong century. Some that have always been with me and I regular go back too: Gardening- all of it. I can't remember any time not having some level of garden from the time I was big enough to walk. I love daylilies, roses, iris, herbs, veggies, hybridizing, flowering shrubs, landscaping, annuals, houseplants, native plants. I helped my parents plant & weed their veggie gardens when I was 3 yr old, helped my mom start her tomatoes & squash in the window, and at 15 taught her to enjoy growing flowers instead of only food. I take breaks from it sometimes cutting back to just a few things for several years and then..wham...I'm in it 10 times more than last time. Knitting, crochet, spinning & dying yarns. another one that has been a lifetimer. My mom taught me to knit when I was 4 and grandmother taught me to crochet at 6. I taught myself how to design my own sweaters and eventually took classes to learn how to spin/dye. Garden Photography- another life long love. I picked up my first camera at age 5 and my first picture was of my dog sitting in front of my bed of nasturtiums. I've been published a few times. Most notable the cover of a book about the history of an island my great-grandparents helped to settle. Scrapbooking- this is an on-again-off-again love. Obsessive when its on. Ditto with all kinds of other arts & crafts. Reading- I love historical fiction, especially by Christian authors. I also love "how too" and research subjects- learning is a passion. Church- Well maybe not a hobby but it leads to some. I've been active in my church even preaching a sermon to two and singing on the worship team. Geneology & historical research. This is really my mom's hobby but I'm her chief backup archivist & research assistant. Tech- well I do this for a living but I explore online communities on my own time. Cooking- this is also a necessity because I have children with food allergies. I bake all our breads, make my own mixes, and cook from scratch a lot. I make a lot of my own recipes. I also can & freeze our fruits & veggies. Outdoors- I love camping, fishing, hiking, travel to new places, exploring nature & manmade wonders, native plants. a lot of these are on hietus while the kids get a little bigger and able to join. In years past I was an expert seamstress, marksman on a rifle team, raised rabbits & ducks, and a number of other things that have not lasted the test of time.

Pandigital Novel 7' update?
Q

vala unless you really want to use this thing as a tablet I really would consider NOT doing this update at least not now, I would enjoy it exactly as it is, it can do a LOT just like it is, I have not done the update on mine yet and not sure I will. I really like it as it is. If the time comes when the update seems to be working more easily and I really feel the need to have the other apps then I may do it or if I buy another PDN and do that one. Especially since you have not been using it at all yet, use it and enjoy it for a while before you get into an update that you may find very frustrating. I think everyone moving up to this update should definitely back up their current firmware or at the very least go into settings and write down what firmware version you have and your serial number so that should you need to revert back you at least know what one to go back to.

What are the best historical novels for learning to love history?
Q
Comments (23)
cacye makes a good point: I think history became something more than a tedious school subject for me after reading 'All About Archaeology' which was one of a science book series back in the 60's. It covered Egypt, Greece, etc as well as the Meso & South American cultures. I couldn't get enough of books about the Incas after that, bloodthirsty kid that I was. :) As for historical fiction that caught my interest, Johnny Tremain, already mentioned by bumblebeez, tops my list because it features so many historical figures that were just names in my history classes, but came alive in the fiction. For example, it's because of Johnny Tremain that I remember that Paul Revere was not the only man who took the message on the British army movement, and that the second was named William Dawes. Another historical fiction which impressed me was Margaret Irwin's Young Bess about Elizabeth I. Oddly enough, I saw the films made of both these books before reading the original novels; the films sent me to the library for the novels first and then to the history & biography sections. A third historical fiction which sent me to the history books was Georgette Heyer's The Spanish Bride -- when I read it now, I bypass the romance parts and pay more attention to the Peninsular War.

assorted tea bags, hot cocoa, or the crystal lite type cold drinks, snack crackers/cookies, in the small 2 to 6 pks or the 100 calorie pks, (small serving). As for titles on books, Harliquin puts out several a month, I'd see if I could get a bunch at the thrift store or yard sale, they add up quick in cost.

The older Nora Roberts romance books, unless she likes paranormal type stuff or murder mysteries. I just went to the thrift store over the weekend and got a bunch of paperbacks (it was even half price day!) and got several Nora Roberts, probably some I've read before. Another good romance author is Sarah Elizabeth Phillips. Jude Deveraux is another good author.

If you can find a thrift store that carries a good supply of used books, that would be the best deal. I say that because I went into one here that had a dismal selection. I am new to this area, so when I was in my hometown this weekend I stopped at Value Village and came out with a bag full of books and paid only $6+.

Debbie Macomber writes great novels. My mom's almost 93 and she loves Debbie Macomber novels. Binoculars are fun for older folks that are shut in also. My mom loves looking at the birds, flowers, butterflies, etc.

I'm a Macomber fan, too; haven't read Jude Deveraux for some time, but if you friend likes stories from the days of Dukes, Lords, etc. she's a good read. Check your library. Ours has a 'sale' room of books they've pulled because of duplicates or some other reason. Used book stores are another good source already mentioned.

If you're in the same town, see about a library card and make weekly trips for her when you go for yourself. Would reduce the number of 'things' she'd have to keep track of. My suggestion would be to just take her 1 or 2 books, get her reaction or even ask her if she still likes to read or reads this style.

How about wrapping up some of the little things with her to open one each day. Candy, crackers, lotion, a special tea, a funny magnet, package of note cards with no verse, the 100 cal. packets of snacks already mentioned. It doesn't have to be fancy.....a cousin did this for me after surgery and it was such fun. You might even label the box "survival kit" or some such title to bring a smile or 2.

Let us know what you do, and how she enjoyed it. I do wish for her a very speedy recovery.

Thanks for the ideas! It's going to be a while before I can visit so I'm mailing the box. My friend lives in another state.
