What are the best historical novels for learning to love history?

Historicals, really help help develop a feel, for the sweep and drama of history. They help with reading speed too. They should be emphasized more. They are disappearing, and aren't even spine marked anymore, as a category, in the local libraries.

It's time for the return of the historical novel. Family friendly please, and accurate! Our kids are growing up clueless. Current fare substitutes a meanness, for adventure and challenge. A survey in England, just found more people who believed on the existence of Sherlock Holmes, than Winston Churchill. Huh? If they read more...

I'm especially interested in Americana, and books written before 1960, like 'Calico Palace', some of the Louis L'Amour books, and others with a strong sense of place. Remember Captain from Castile?
