My test results came back bad.I have diabetes...not severe.

I have high cholesterol,my Triglycerides are high. I have something wrong with my thyroid,getting more tests done on it.I have high blood pressure.going on medicine.My chest x-ray is ok.And the best of all....I have a mass in my right breast.Getting a spot compression done on the 18th.Oh joy! BUT my livers good!

I am feeling so sorry for myself right now,wanta join my pity party??? LOL!

And yes,I had a real cig today....first one since May 23rd.I feel like such a loser right now.....

Gosh CR! That's a lot of not-so-good news.

1 good thing though is that the thryoid controls a lot of things in the body... get that working and you may see weight just fall off... plus the cholesterol will probably go down.

Please don't have even one more 'real' cigarette okay?? You've worked so hard to get this far.

caagirl- I don't think there is ever a simple answer, formula, or quick fix, and you will have to come to peace with your own sense of what is "enough", the difference between a want and a need (not that we can't have both), or come to the realization of cause and effect - pleasure and pain. It's also a part of aging. It seems like you spend all your early years accumulating things because most of us started with very little, then somewhere between the age of 50 and 60 you wonder why you have all this "stuff" and what are you going to do with it? You offer things to family and friends, but they already have their own "stuff" and they don't need yours! I struggle getting rid of things that might be useful (that comes from being poor growing up and the early years of being married). I congratulate myself because I'm not my mother storing hundreds of empty plastic margarine and Cool-Whip tubs, but I'm hopeless when it comes to a jar with a lid, so I have a small plastic storage container in the basement where I store good reusable jars/lids. When it is full, that is all I can have and I will put jars in the recycling bin that don't fit in my container. I've rarely needed more jars, so I'm satisfied with what I have. And remember, recycling is good too. I can only have files in one filing cabinet - and when you teach as many classes as I do and love doing research, I could fill a room of filing cabinets if I didn't restrict myself to the one cabinet. I do use scrap paper and junk mail to make homemade paper I use for making my own cards, gift tags, wrapping paper, gift items, and various things. It is a simple and useful hobby - but I also add paper to the recycling bin. So, I have to provide self-imposed limits and congratulate myself on doing such a good job to keep within those boundaries. I like to challenge myself. During July I added something daily to the give-away boxes destined for the thrift stores. This month I'm going to go through all the pens/pencils/markers and toss what doesn't work. All the extras I really don't have a use for I'm giving to a friend who is a teacher. She never has enough!!!! September I'm going through all the Christmas decorations and will disperse them accordingly - offer them to family, take to the thrift store, or put them in the trash. There are 2 boxes we typically use from, and a bunch more we're not really sure what is in them anymore. The Christmas china and serving dishes, and the 12-days of Christmas glasses are also going. The days of having 3 or 4 generations of people over for Christmas are long gone and all these items are going to make someone else happy instead of being negative thoughts for me. I grew up with very little, so buying things - even for a person who is careful and follows a budget, I got to a point where I had an AH HA moment. I realized I was no longer poor, my needs were easily met, and I began to strike a balance mentally between wants and needs. Did "things" really add value to my life, or was I only purchasing them because they were a bargain? We all know there are bargains each and every day, and when you really do have an actual need, there will be a bargain for it. I rarely pay full price for anything. I've been doing something that may seem a bit drastic for 2 years that has curbed spending, saved gas and wear and tear on my car, broke a few old habits, and really worked well for me. I only shop every other month (other than groceries which I shop for weekly on a $125/month food budget for 2 adults). This broke my habit for tracking every sale in every store, making the rounds to every thrift store several times a month, and going to garage sales every week. It has worked so well I now only "shop" the first week, and sometimes the last week of a shopping month. And when I do go shopping it is with a list, a purpose, and I actually enjoy planning and executing the outing. I may even pack myself a nice lunch and eat it at a park close to where I need to shop. Sometimes you need to look at things with a new perspective, and even little changes in several areas can make a big difference. I once collected tea pots and had a great place to display them. What started with a couple I already had, a few that were inherited from my mother, quickly ended up being easy gifts for friends and family to purchase for me and far more than was necessary. They were fun to display, but two moves later I don't have the space for them. All people saw was a LOT of tea pots displayed, now they see a handful of the special ones I have left from the collection. I have asked my family not to purchase me more tea pots and tea gadgets, I ask them to buy me a nice box of tea instead - I've got the pots and gadgets covered. After I got a computer I didn't renew magazines as they came due because they were a major cause of clutter and waste. I can read at least portions of the magazines on-line or at the library. I canceled the local newspaper because I can read the obituaries and local news on-line, or hear it on the local radio stations. I get coupons on Wednesday in the free weekly paper, instead of paying to get them in the Sunday edition. I did a reality check of clothing and shoes when we put in a new closet system, and now I have a real wardrobe that works together with around 25 items, instead a bunch of clothes packed into the closet. If I add something, I also get rid of something. A few choice items for decorations and some original art by the family, rather than collections and stuff to dust and care for, helps keep things simple. Simple living gives me peace of mind, which is worth a whole lot more than "stuff". -Grainlady

Liz, Start by getting rid of EVERYTHING that doesn't fit, without any exceptions that it might fit "some day". Make it your goal to know that you can pull out any item of clothing and not have to put it back because it's the wrong size. I am familiar with that "finding a good home" idea and I kept things way longer than I should have because of it. Send your clothes to the thrift store and just picture in your mind someone finding your outfit and exclaiming, "This is PERFECT!". About 2 years ago I discovered the joy of thrift store shopping. LOL It takes time to go through the racks, but I like the thrill of the hunt. Never again will I pay $100 for a wool blazer (bought a like-new one yesterday for $1.60) or $50 for a pair of my favorite jeans (bought 2 pairs yesterday for $2.40 each that looked brand new) etc. I ended up with a new blazer, 2 pairs of jeans, one wool sweater with tags from the Gap, 3 long sleeved tops nice enough to wear to work, a half-dozen scented Yankee votive candles, a brand new big heavy weight fleece blanket to take to my sons football games (for $1.40!), 7 paperback books, and a pair of mens snow pants, all for about $23. Now I find it MUCH easier to get rid of clothes that aren't "me" because now I know that someone out there will find them and be happy. All the clothes in my closet are the right size except one turtleneck I pulled out yesterday that is a size too big. It went directly in a bag to be given away later. Bud--funny story: We work in a conservative midwestern office where we often get those "trendy" dressing, young, transfers from California coming in. Raul_in_mexico: Well, I'd prefer to spay non-breeding dogs before first heat to reduce chance of breast cancer from 25% (spaying after 3rd heat cycle) to less than 1%. Although women with genetic markers for breast cancer DO elect prophylactic radical mastectomies and I for one don't see anything wrong with that. And in breeds with high incidence of hip dysplasia I'd screen them with a distraction view radiograph at ~14 weeks so we could discuss doing a juvenile pelvic symphysidesis before the dog had excruciating pain and lameness and required a total hip replacement or FHO. The point being that there is no good predictive test that allows a vet to determine that THIS dog will at some point have GDV and THIS dog will not as with hip dysplasia. I'd love that GSD study cindyxeus posted to help find something that vets could use to determine more accurately which specific dogs are at risk. But until then, all we have is family history when available and breed. You can either wait until the dog is presented as an emergency with all sorts of odd stacked against it (usually older dogs, electrolyte imbalances, +/- stomach necrosis, shock) or do a prophylactic gastropexy while the dog is young and healthy and prevent the whole problem in the first place. Of course, the prophy pexy would have to be based on risk, but until we get a handle on what the risk factors actually are, all we have is breed and family history. I think that if a vet here in the US did not discuss the risk of GDV in at-risk breeds and ALL the preventative options, that the vet can and would be successfully sued for malpractice should that dog bloat. And to respond to the "lining the pockets" comment, it is MUCH less expensive to do the pexy prophylactically than when the dog actually bloats. OTOH, with the numbers you gave it is clear to me why you don't think GDV is a problem. The vet school sees about 12 per month and the animal hospital where I worked in a small NC town had about 9-12 patients per year get GDV, although not all were seen at the hospital. So you are not seeing it nearly as much as we are for some reason. If we were seeing such low case numbers as you are, I doubt we would be even having this discussion because it would be pointless. But we are seeing GDV a LOT, and people with at-risk breeds are intested in preventing it rather than dealing with it, especially considering the suffering to the dog and expense to the owner. But I certainly see your point and if it was as rare here as it is in your practice, I'd 100% agree with you.

This is my second reno, but this one is the entire house, inside and out. All at once. We're practically building new. I am lucky in that our kitchen is so small, there weren't many options. It's not a perfect design but we were so limited (can't build out, move windows b/c we are in a historic district) it took alot of the pining out of it. Which is a good thing because I'm pining plenty over everything else - not just in in kitchen, but every single bit of minutia (what finish for door hinges? Which backplate for the dorknobs? Which style baluster? On top of all the kitchen decisions.) It's exhausting, and a full time job. I'm getting to the point where I'm afraid to make a call on things (like my island lights, which I posted about yesterday) because I'm getting so tired of it I'm afraid I'm just going to say "oh, F--- it" and make a decision I'll regret. It's not easy and in my experience, it doesn't get any easier. ;-) I also recommend seeing a designer. Even if you just take your measurements in to HD and see what they have to say, you might get some ideas you hadn't thought of to then take home and work on yourself. It WILL be worth it in the end. Even though there are times DH and I want to kill each other during this whole ordeal, it's the "before and after" transformation that is our drug - I'm hoping in the end it'll be like childbirth...we'll forget all about the pain. LOLOL

What a load of crap. Not worth starting to smoke again though. You've been doing so good. It won't help anyway. Once you find out that the mass is not really anything, you could be all set to go.

Well D@mn!!! I can't even imagine how discouraged you are right now,CR!! I was thinking the same as Lydia about the Thyroid. I've heard of people that were treated for diabetes and high cholesterol, only to find out the problem was the thyroid!!

We just have to Pray that everything turns out OK...and then you can get the go ahead for the GB surgery!!

Maybe there is a silver lining though. If they fix your thyroid maybe, just maybe you won't need the surgery. And if that is the problem, once the weight comes off your diabetes and high cholesterol might go away to.

I'm sorry Chubby. Nothing like having it all thrown at you at once.

The good news about all of this is that ... while you have been taking good care of yourself getting your body ready for the possible surgery, you've caught some potentially dangerous things! There's a lot going on, yes ... and much to be grateful for. Any one of these instances could be dangerous to you, long-term, if not cared for. The fact that you've been seeing the doctors, and these things have been identified, is GOOD!!! They can all be fixed.

So put away those ciggies, you want to continue doing all the right things so that when all this is dealt with, you'll be having your surgery!

But not enough to start smoking again but you already know that so I won't rag you about it.

I guess the fifty thousand dollar question now is 'what now' and what first'?

Being fluffy myself my mammos show a mass every time then I have to go back in and have the extra squeeze job only to be told it's fatty tissue. It's fatty tissue I'm sure.

Magic is right about the thyroid.
If it's out of whack it'll make a woman hold onto excess weight. Medication helps but the removal of the thyroid helps big time with weight loss.

All that other stuff isn't good either but it's all controlled with medication.

You are going to be fine.
I'm so sure you'll be fine that I'm not even gonna hug you....well, not very hard anyway....(Deb)

If I know you your pity party will end, oh, probably tomorrow night...maybe thursday morning, then you'll get to work and deal with things.

Thanks everyone! I know this can all be dealt with but it's just that I've been working on this for a year and now this....the DR told me he'll make me better.It just seems like I gave up so much just to get shot down.I gave up caffine....gave up soda,mostly gave up chocolate,gave up smoking...just seems like I gave and gave and gave and then it was all shot down in one day.I WILL pull up my big girl panties and go on...tomorrow.For tonight,I just want to pout and cry.I am scared,not ashamed to admit it.I am so hoping this is just a fatty mass (dang fat anyway!) there is no history of breast cancer in my family but my mom and sister have had cysts that turned out to be nothing.Hopefully that's what mine is.Sorry for being a whiny baby...but sometimes ya just gotta ...ya know....

Wow! You got hit with the whole kit and kaboodle at once, didn't you? You are entitled to one day of whining and feeling sorry for yourself, so don't feel guilty about it! I believe that in a day or so, you'll be ready to shake off the pity party and get busy with taking care of the problems. You've weathered some tough times through the years and you know you are not a quitter! I will pray that the mass in your breast is not anything serious. (((((CR))))) That's a lot to be told about in one day, anyone would feel kicked in the chops after all that. And that lump might be fatty tissue or it might be a cyst, that's what I had. Try not to worry, all this stuff is fixable and you're gonna feel like a million bucks before too long. Your doctor is optomistic and so should you be! Good luck, sweetie, and please don't think that a ciggie is going to help you because it won't. Go eat a nice veggie burrito or something! Treat yourself to a decaf latte or a little tootsie pop, something different.

Hopefully my thyroid is the cause of a lor of this...funn thing,I don't feel bad!! In fact,I feel better than I have in a long time since I got my C-PAP and quit smoking.I feel like I'm falling apart and didn't even know it!
I;m getting a spot compression Kath...whatever that is.They also took more blood yesterday to check my thyroid ad I'm getting some other kind of test on it( I know I have to drink something) on the same day I get my breast checked again.
And he's tryig me o Crestor for my Cholesterol to see if I van tolerate it.

I'm so sorry CR. But like Stoney said at least they found these thing and they can be fixed. All those things you gave up are really not important but your health is important. So, put on your big girl panties and put down the cigs. You are going to be feeling so much better when the doc gets all those things fixed. It will be like having a whole new, healthy you. Maybe when the thyroid and diabetes get under control you will lose the weight naturally and won't even need the surgery. Wouldn't that be a blessing?!!

The doctor said he will take care of you and I'm sure he will. Just hang in there and once you're all fixed, you will feel great. Like others said, you might not even need the surgery. It's good that you are finding out about all this now so that it doesn't get worse.(((CR)))

I don't blame you for being ticked and disappointed - just don't take it out on your body!
Here you have done what you needed to do to move forward to this goal and now you get waylaid by all new information.
As others have said - the good new is that they have found these issues and can help you. Please give yourself a pat on the back, toss the smokes, and try to look at this a bump in the road to your goal - not a deadend.
BTW - a clear chest x-ray and healthy liver sounds like excellent news. I'm sending best thoughts. You have done the really hard part - one slip so does not make you a loser - so don't even think it.

I'm trying to look at it as the glass is half FULL attitude. The way I see it, the news would have been a lot worse if you hadn't made these changes for the better in so many areas over the past year. You've had a kick in the teeth but as others have said, this could be good news in the long run. There is no doubt in my mind that if you had continued on your merry way without these changes, you would be in much worse condition. I wish you all the best.

Aw, what a lot of garbage for one day! I am sorry. But chin up, you have so many supporters here and we are all behind you. We KNOW you can get through this. It just a delay! Toss those cigs out and keep going girl. Some of us will pull you and some of us will push you, but you will get there. And just think how wonderful you will feel!

Well that sucks CR, but the really good thing about this is that they found it all early, and it really is fixable.

But forget the ciggies - what's in order is a really good glass of red wine (all those antioxidants!) Or maybe two. Then chin up, start the therapy and blow those baddies away!

Hang in there CR - as I was reading your post, it mirrored my life/body until a few weeks ago (except for the breast issue). I sure am wishing good news on that one. But the rest is manageable (although I say that after my thyroidectomy). But I really do emphathize and sympathize, too, 'cause I've been there (and technically, still am) We won't count that ciggy - just keep at it. I've been cig free since June 9th - yippy! That's a hard habit to break. I actually did it for a more than a year a while back. This time I'm going to stick it out - it feels good to be smoke-free. Just take one step at a time, I know you know that, but just remind yourself of that. You don't want to stress yourself unnecessarily.

CR, I had to google, spot compression because I'd never heard of it. It's another mammogram that's done on a small area that's compressed, so they can see it better.

chubby_rat, I am so sorry to hear the diagnosis! I am an insulin dependant diabetic so please let me give you a word of advise. Sign up for diabetes education as soon as possible. You will find out that you are not alone. You have a condition that is treatable. You will go through some phases as you learn about it. I believe depression is the first and I can tell you firsthand that I was blown away when it happened to me.

Well wishers will pat you on the back and tell you "it's all treatable with medication" and then dismiss is. One hard thing I had to learn was that it really was my little red wagon and no matter how close I was to a person they really did not understand or comprehend what I was going through.

I have an ironic story about the evening I was diagnosed and then went out (against my better wishes) with a bunch of people. It's too personal to post on the internet, but your story made me flash back.

Chubby_rat, I also posted when you quit smoking. I'm sure I mentioned that it's okay to fall off the wagon as long as you get back on. My doctor is sooooo happy that I quit smoking. She says it is the most important thing I've done in respect to my overall medical condition. Don't throw away that month of smoke-free for nothing! I've had a few stressful times when I wanted to reach for one and haven't and always look back and say, that cigarette wouldn't have helped (only hurt). I truly am not trying to preach. Just let you know that your friends, if they don't have diabetes cannot console or comisserate with you. You need to get education as soon as possible; it truly will help you feel better and much more in control.

BTW, this is an exception. I don't even tell people I have diabetes anymore. If a person doesn't have it, they don't understand. Been there, believe me.
