Off the the fair!

Well, tomorrow we head to the state fair, about 3 1/2 hrs away. Younges DS is showing 2 of his pigs. He did very good at our county fair, Reserve Champion overall, with one of his pigs. We consider this kind of a vacation, staying at a "nicer" hotel, eating out alot and just hanging at the fair. Good times!

Have fun!

Loved going to the State Fair, but times changed and it was no longer safe to go.

When teaching, I was in charge of 4 H club, and had the privilege of taking a day off from school, with 2 students, to set up diaplay.

Remember the grand stand at nite and the fireworks.

We live about 20 minutes from the State Fair (Colorado).
We're planning to go Wednesday which is Seniors Day, we
get in for free....

Anney, Here is a link to the MSU publications on Downey Mildew. The August 2, 2006 and August 7, 2006 Newsletters are the ones that laid out the spray program for this. It sounds like you have to be really contientious about spraying, but as far as I'm concerned, it will be worth it. http://www.ipm.msu.edu/downymildew.htm I haven't even tried to look for these fungicides -- last year, I used some different ones I had already, including Daconil, Bordeaux mixture, Ortho Funginex, and Maneb. They did buy me some time, but eventually, the fungus got the vines anyway. I had a crop for about 5 weeks, should have gotten another 4 weeks or so out of them. I know that none of the recommended fungicides are probably going to be sold at your typical garden center or chain store. I figure I'll run out to a farm supply place and try to get these (unless they're something like $50 each for a little bag -- then I might have to reconsider). I have one other plan I am going to try -- a sort of non-traditional approach. I was actually a horticulture major 20 some years ago at Michigan State. We used bleach extensively to surface sterilize plant tissue prior to propagation. First time I did it, I thought, "wow, this is nuts, it's going to burn this stuff up and kill it." But, 10% or even 20% bleach solutions didn't hurt the plant. I'm going to try spraying just a couple of my plants every day, top and bottom, with a fine mist of 10% bleach solution to try to kill the spores as they land. I might try alternating with a solution of something like lysol as well, to provide an alternate type of sterilant. Jerry Baker used to use lysol, mouthwash, and similar household products to treat diseases. Hydrogen peroxide might work, too. Just an experiment, the worst I can do is kill the plants.

Natives don't generally like to have their roots messed with, it's probably going through some shock. I would buy some shredded redwood mulch and layer it thick around the plant in a 4 foot radius, water well, then check under the mulch once a week. (scratch down a couple of inches) When it dries out, water again. Ray Hartman is a fast grower, hopefully yours will recover.

It was amazing how many plants were gone is such a short amount of time, as evidenced by the long checkout. I chatted up the sellers rather than stand in line, and got some great tips. The Peebles had a really informative display of seedlings' flowers from a single pod - every one was remarkably different. My little car was crammed with Mexican White, Samoan Fluff, a Celadine and Kaneohe Sunburst. One the way home, I stopped at the incredible 99 Market for whole snapper (it was suitably awesome on the grill, wrapped in banana leaves), and from the plant vendor in the market hall - a 5 gallon Michelia Alba. There were certainly some astonishing plants and flowers at the sale - well worth the drive... =^,,^=

I went to the New York State Fair once, back when I was about 12. Saw Jay and the Americans (Cara Mia, Only in America) and got free sodapop from the Canada Dry tent. Both for free, with park admission.

okay, call me a city girl, although nowhere near a large one, but what do you do with the pig while you are there? i know it doesn't stay with you in your room but does the hotel have accommodations? reading back, that sounds like such a dumb question.......but the only way to know is to ask, right?

Tee, hee Jae_tn. :) They stay in pens at the fair and that way everyone can come and see the pigs and all the other animals.

the Seniors Day at the Colorado State Fair
is Wednesday the 31st....

Oh jae tn, your post made me giggle. I'm so glad you're interested! Yes, as marilyn sue said, the pigs, cattle, lambs, and goats all stay at the fairgrounds in pens. There are dog competitions that last only a day or so, and they stay with their "people" wherever that is. I don't believe there are any cats.
And Patti, fair food is so tasty!!
