HEY GARDENWEB FOLKS !!!

September 6 through September 7, 2008 marks the 2008 Southern California Plumeria Society's SALE at Balboa Park !!!

With SOOOO MANY GREAT PLUMERIA CULTIVARS on site this is definitely THE EVENT NOT TO MISS !!!

I was fortunate to have made the trip out there that Saturday afternoon with a good buddy ... Juan !!!

And so without further ado, here are my pix taken that morning-afternoon !!!

Arriving at Balboa Park, some great architecture to admire ...

Then it was time to head to the SCPS SALE line !!!

GREETED with ALOHA came from these wonderful ladies with their Plumeria Offerings !!!

Then it was time to CHECK-OUT ...

Then off to one of my favorite restaurants there at ...

For some REFRESHING MARGARITAS !!!

And some YUMMY TORTILLA CHIPS AND SALSA !!!

I had the CARNE ASADA PLATE !!!

JUAN had the CARNITAS ESPECIAL !!!

GREAT FOOD and GREAT ENTERTAINMENT !!!

After the DELICIOUS LUNCH it was time to goooo SHOPPING !!!

One of my favorite shops there for Cacti and Mexican Pottery !!!

Then off to the Street Faire !!!

Then it was time to head HOME ... but BEFORE we made it home, a stop of at the local AM/PM for some REJUVINATING REFRESHMENTS to combat the heat of the day !!!

Looks a fantastic sale! I wish I was closer!!! From your pictures it looked like ALOT of healthy plumeria were for sale!!!

And I love how you always end with what fantastic meal you had!! Man those margaritas look good!!!

Thanks for sharing---you always put alot of effort in posting your 'plumeria' adventures here on the forum--we appreciate it!!!!

You were given a systemic rose food by the sounds of it. Used early in the spring growth cycle it can ward off the worst of the aphids but used regularly can hinder your plants ability to fend for itself and will kill the good and bad bugs, both. It won't kill that black widow, though, and it's impact on powdery mildew would be limited at best. Washing off aphids and other bugs and spores is always the best control method. Using chemicals should always be last even if they're contact or soil applied because they're toxic to something... could be you, your family, your groundwater, your pets. To know how much and how often to water is never an easy task but the one we use here is to water deeply then take a sharp stick, maybe 3ft, and stick it in the soil at the leaf line and see how far you can push it in. If it stops before the halfway point, try it again. If it still won't push in to a depth of 15inches, you need to water deeper. We anticipate an average bush will require 5 gallons of water whenever we water. More for larger, less for smaller. We increase our watering from once a week in the winter to 3-4 times a week in the summer. Flood irrigation may run every 10 days in the winter to once a week in the summer. (flood is how they watered the citrus and pecan groves). I'm guessing with your average temps, the roses would like to be watered twice a week during warm weather when there's no rainfall and once every week or two during the winter. You can get snow, cold winds and dampness. We don't get that here in the Valley. There was an elderly couple that had a HUGE rose garden up there several years ago. They attended the Mesa rose society meetings fairly regularly. You might ask around. Their home was up for sale a few years ago so they may no longer live in the area. I'd still plan to use that horse manure once or twice a year. Try to mix it with a forest product or even wood shavings and let it sit fallow for a couple months before application. The manure helps the wood break down and the wood keeps the manure from clumping into a sick mess. You can also throw some leaves and/or pine needles into it and you'll have a great mulch. Your local nursery knows your local weather and growing conditions. If you have 'winter', they're telling you the garden needs to be allowed to go dormant so the bushes don't put out a lot of new growth only to freeze to death when the first biting wind comes blowing through.

Stanofh: I have had the same observation about the California Delonix regias. They seem to be more compact and denser trees than in pictures of trees I have seen in Phoenix and in Florida. I haven't come to any conclusions why this is...does anybody have any ideas? Katie, there's two D. regias available for sale as of 8/9/08 at Hunter's Nursery in Spring Valley,CA. One is a 15 gal. for $139.00 and a 24" box for $495.00. I took pictures of these tree this past Sunday. I'll post the pics. Also, J.D. Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

Not being the worlds most partcular person has it`s advantages. I love the surprise of seedlings, what is true of plumeria is true of most plants. I really am not all that fond of ordering plants on-line, it`s hard to have plants shipped here because of the heat. I try not to do any trades in the summer, then I run into the fact it is too cold in the north. I really prefer local growers, local nurseries, plant sales, swaps. Luckily there are multiple people in our area to buy plumeria from IE: Emersons. You can get a much bigger plant for less than a cutting. I think every plant society raises money through sales, the bromeliad society has a great sale every year in Houston and the daylily socieity sales must be avoided to prevent draining of the bank account. To feed my other addictions I have a friend who raises bromeliads-Jimbos nursery in Santa Fe, amaryllis co-ops, a plant co-op, Cactus King on the north side of Houston, Josephs nursery in Pearland, Houston Garden center (70% off) for citrus!, plant swaps and of course the gardenweb forums exchanges, Maas nursery in Seabrook....I need a 20 step program! Rodney- only one purchase? You are either coming to grips with your plumiaholics or you are really out of space already. Enjoyed your pic-tours which kept me home and not buying any. Thanks for sharing. Bill

I just got my Plumeria fix, Balboa Park fix, Old Town fix and Casa de Reyes (?) fix, all in one post! When I visit the family in Poway, I can't get my dad to Disney, but he's always up for Old Town... and the harbor cruise. Man!... that food looks good!

Thanks for the great pictures Rodney. I was at the sale also. I look forward to it every Sept. Nothing better than a trip to Balboa Park and a room full of Plumerias. I am definately out of space so I only bought 2 small ones. I got Charlotte Ebert and Kauka Wilder. Loved the size of the flowers on Charlotte!
Did anyone else here go and what did you bring home???

It was amazing how many plants were gone is such a short amount of time, as evidenced by the long checkout.

I chatted up the sellers rather than stand in line, and got some great tips. The Peebles had a really informative display of seedlings' flowers from a single pod - every one was remarkably different.

My little car was crammed with Mexican White, Samoan Fluff, a Celadine and Kaneohe Sunburst. One the way home, I stopped at the incredible 99 Market for whole snapper (it was suitably awesome on the grill, wrapped in banana leaves), and from the plant vendor in the market hall - a 5 gallon Michelia Alba.

There were certainly some astonishing plants and flowers at the sale - well worth the drive... =^,,^=

Thanks for the pictures Rodney... it was almost as good as being there, always enjoy your pictures. Margaritas looked good and so did that food !!! Juan looks like I should know him. Thanks again Rodney !!
