Need help choosing small shade tree!!
Comments (5)My choice would be a jacaranda. The Golden Rain is very invasive. Consider also Madrone Arbutus menziesii Strawberry tree Arbutus unedo One of the Bottlebrush species Callistemon would be good Royal Poinciana Delonix regia There are several small to intermediate Eucalyptus trees. You should visit a good nursery in your area. Not a Lowes or Home Depot. The nursery would have a larger variety and a knowledgeable staff with ideas you might not have ever though of....See MoreDelonix regia from seed
Comments (7)I started one from seed almost exactly a year ago. I picked the seeds up on vacation from St.Lucia they were red flowers. Amazing tree. Tossed the seeds in pots with potting soil end of July, full sun, south facing yard. Seed came up really fast in hot humid Southern Ontario Canada. Winter.. took them in (two of them) south facing window one died near the heat vent. It didn't like the dry air or the cold from the window glass the other managed to survive gave it a nice big pot this year. Put it outside in the end of May. It had lost all it's leaves except the top few sets and never grew and branches. This summer it exlploded lots of lower branches and foliage. Looks great but still a long way to go. Hope this helps....See Moreleguminous plant trio
Comments (7)Wow, your Colvillea really looks like a winner, Gary. Was it trimmed to induce branching (or conserve greenhouse space)? I'm wondering if there is a chance this species might even thrive outdoors in your area. Patusho, I'm not sure about Colvillea and Schizolobium, but I've read that the pulp around the seeds of immature pods of Delonix regia are actually edible. I haven't tried them myself, but they are supposed to have a sweet, gelatinous texture and in parts of India (and elsewhere), are a reserve food source in times of famine. Comments (32)That Sanda might be the million dollar question. Some want the tree you describe...flavor and large fruit on a small tree. As far as just plain big Mango tree? I know Baileys was a rocket..growing 2' a year in the cool SF bay area. But in souca? I don't know the complete answer...seems like the very biggest trees laden with fruit are grown from seedlings of Supermarket produce....See Moregardenguru1950
