Did anyone see the black and white pic of Gustav?

It was on the internet this morning. On some weather website, color pic above it, below a smaller one of the eye of the storm. As soon as I walked on the floor, one of the other nurses told me to come over, I "had to see this". It looked just like the grim reaper. Creepiest thing I'd ever seen. They were still talking about it when I left tonight.

I thought for sure someone here would've seen it and posted about it. I've tried to find the pic but so far haven't.

Nope, but I saw one like that with another hurricane, so I suspect it's something that makes the rounds every time a hurricane is in the news. Possibly Photoshopped.

It wasn't in an e-mail. The guy who showed it to me, just happened to be reading about Gustav on a weather website yesterday morning and there were two pictures of the hurricane at the bottom of the screen. There was nothing pointing anything odd about the picture on the website, he just noticed it.

When I saw the title for this thread, I thought oh-oh, maybe I better not have a look at it. Well you see, I like taking pictures of hostas, especially hosta with water drops, fall hostas and closeups. But I don't need to add another photo category---I can barely keep up with the photos that I have taken. And then it happened, I looked and love the pictures herein! So I have Beverly to thank for opening my eyes to fall hosta picture taking, Luuk for closeup photos and now Mac for black and white photos! Here I go:

Natesgramma: I don't have much info on the subway tiles. Sorry. The invoice states 3x6 Navona. That's it. It's a common look so you should be able to find something close to it rather easily. But this light marble tile is matte, FYI and does not have a textured feel - it's smooth. Scootermom: There is an (aftermarket) single trash pull out on the right side of the island on the dishwasher side of the cabinet (had to ensure clearance for both being opened at same time). The pic below shows the other side of the kitchen leading into the FR. Czeck chick: The island base is standard size of 34h x 36w x 24d. The granite has a 10" overhang. We put doors on the front & back of the base cab for easy access since we don't have pull outs. The doors on the far side of cabinet (facing the white doors) have magnetic closures instead of knobs so they don't get in the way when people sit there. The base is constructed of plywood. Since the trash is under there, we store liquor and other things that won't be bothered by the trash. The light wood telephone table is temporary until I find something better. We'll be changing out the floor strip between kitchen and FR to blend better too. That's what the floor installers put down; don't know what they were thinking. Ewww. Here's some pics. suzienj - I vote for the cream and cherry island. I guess that's a good thing at this point, since I'm building the same exact color cabinets as in your inspiration and sample photos as we speak! I almost went with maple or cherry (actually would have gone a bit more contemporary if I had gone that route) but came to realize how much more comfortable I felt with this palette. In hindsight, I think I could never get enthusiastic about some of the stains, especially the ones with orange undertones -many of them clash with my coloring! Also, the cream and chestnut go better with the design and furnishings in the rest of my home. As far as wear and tear, I think the island is what would get the brunt of the rough treatment with kids as they grow, and that is in the stain. We are doing beadboard under the counter, in part for that very reason. Our cabinets are locally built custom - the KD says that they've been doing this for many years and that the newer techniques and materials are quite good and that their finish does not chip. If worst came to worst(I asked) they could repair. I'm curious about your inspiration photo. What is the granite that is shown there? Is is the same one that you are doing? Also - our family room is open to the kitchen and is on a slab. We're trying to make a wood floor work, but I'm not sure it's going to. In that case, I'll be interested to hear what tile you end up choosing. I agree that a medium golden tone, perhaps a travertine or porcelain tile look alike would go great. Dark photo of super white on a white island right after counter installed in my kitchen. Don't give up on the super white. I looked at 5 different slabs before I found one that would work for us. It really varies from a med/dark gray to a swirly white & light gray. Eventually I started calling the fabricators and asking about their super white. If I got someone knowledgeable they would describe it and send a photo. Be very specific about what you want - I wanted it to have some white but nice contrast so the very gray and swirly white/light gray didn't work. The slab we found also has some areas that are almost peach (it is very light, just an accent tone in the background) that I loved with our red birch perimeter cabinets. The stone is called by many names - supreme white, white princess, white fantasy - but asking for white quartzite and sharing some of the names got me the stuff I wanted. Note - I still went to look at the slabs even if the photos were a little off - often they look lighter and whiter in person. The picture I saw was black and white. It was also just the eye of the storm, no land.

Seems I recall all the funny "cartoons" of Florida when we had 4 in one season.

We got direct hits from Frances, Jean, AND Wilma...At work there is a sweet southern lady who's name happens to be Wilma...When Wilma (the storm) was incoming we took a head shot of her(the lady) and pasted it into the eye of a picture of the storm and plastered the office with it. Not only was she NOT offended, no one else was, and the humor really helped to diffuse the fear we were feeling. I'm sure that Jannie's comment was completely innocent, and I took it in the same vein.

I take it the comment by Pattico and others is directed at my post. Yes, humor does help at certain times and we all use it. However, when you are the ones who have had to pick up the pieces, try to replace what has been destroyed, gone through that of trying to protect what you have, there is no humor. Just that gut wrenching feeling of what to do this time.
We only get part of the hurricane winds and rain at times with damage to our house, cars and property. We don't get the full force of it. Just a few months ago we had a tornado that wiped out a lot of homes and businesses. Sadly some had no insurance.
I did not intend to offend but apparently did. I will keep my opinion to myself and not post it.

Lynn, you are certainly encouraged to have an opinion and express it. When you named Jannie directly in your post it appeared that you were personally attacking her instead of just sharing an opinion. I, personally, was posting an example to show that IN MY OWN OPINION she meant no harm and meant no offense. I don't feel there was anything confrontational about my post, it wasn't intended to "offend anyone back" and I even offered hugs at the end to EVERYONE affected by this stressful hurricane season (including you!).

The situations you describe happen everywhere, and yes it is sad - no one here is saying it isn't. But just as you are allowed to have an opinion, so are all of the rest of us, and if you want us to respect yours, you need to respect ours as well - it's not a one way street. You posted your opinions, we posted ours back.

I don't think there's a single person here that hasn't been touched by some form of tragedy, but that doesn't mean we can't poke fun at ourselves or post light-hearted comments - that's all part of healing, and we can even agree to disagree when there are differences of opinion.

So I certainly respect the fact that you have strong feelings on the subject, and encourage you to post them if that's what helps you get through. It sounds like this is a touchy subject for you and I'm truly sorry for whatever you've gone through that has hurt you so badly. But I will also step in and try to clarify/defend if I see someone that *in my opinion* is being misunderstood.

So please by all means contribute! Just because I may not agree with someone doesn't mean I may not learn from what they have to say. Differing opinions are what makes the world go 'round, as long as we can all respect each others' :-)
