Switching cabinets??-- white with cherry island- see pics

Sooooo i went to my kitchen designer today and came up with the following... The maple floors are in the dining room/living room that attaches to the kitchen. Did not pick out kitchen floor tiles yet (but will be golden if we go with this) walls will be SW Blonde (yellowish).. what do you think?

Does anyone who got white cabinets (this is more of a creamy white distressed with glaze) regret it? I have 2 children (5 years old)--- will they ruin it? What about sauce? I feel this is a better blend with my house to be...

So vote-- which should i go for-- the white cabinets with cherry island that matches my floors in dining room/living room? Or the maple glazed in the 3rd pic?

The new combo is gorgeous, and to me, has more life than the original. Is the inspiration photo a new one?

Do you have a 'vision' for your kitchen? Do you know the feel and overall look you want? Have you tried the Sweeby test so your choices in materials will all work together to form the goal you want to create? It's easy to find combos that work well together, but you want to choose something that will feel like 'you' when it's finished...That you'll love and feel at home in.

Rhome= I am so happy you gave your 2 cents-- for some reason i really wanted to hear from you!!
The new pics were my original pics-- but i steared away from it b/c i was afraid with kids it would not wear well and i was afraid that it would get "outdated" and not be good for resale-- but after frustration with going with hubbys pic for a cabinet and not finding the right tile (b/c i kept thinking the 2 woods clashed in our other pic) i decided to revisit my first pic.

I literally went to my designer today and said lets start over- i told him what i wanted and why i liked it.... and he helped me come up with the pics and showed me the inspiration pic based on what i was telling him

I LOVE IT-- but i'm still afraid of kids and creamy white.. but for the $$ we are spending I feel like the tones are better and i can do the blonde paint in the house just like i wanted too!!

Hubby actually liked it too! I was so afraid he would hate it!!

Thanks, buildingva. The granite yard called my darker granite "bronze macchiatto" but I think that is a totally made up name. I've never been able to find it under that name. I think it is a pretty new granite, because the people at the fabricator had never seen it before, and they spend a lot of time with granite! I saw at least one other person on Gardenweb with that granite. I can't remember who, but I think they called theirs something like "Princess" granite. I think it is from Brazil, but I'm not even sure.

Cheri, your cabinet doesn't look Arts & Crafts at all. The detail work is beautiful. Soapstone with your black range will be gorgeous. I completely understand the dilemma of what kind of flooring. Your black and white tile is very true to the period. I've seen similar patterns in many late 19th and early 20th century courthouses. I am really leaning toward tile, too. Are you putting radiant heating under the tile? Lighting can be tricky if you are going for a period look. I don't think those old kitchens had much light! I am having recessed ceiling lights and a few pendents. I also want a ceiling fan in the kitchen and maybe one in the breakfast room. Good luck with your salvage shopping. It is really fun! My door find was serendipity. I was just going in to browse on a walk around town. Oh, cool, you have back stairs! I will be anxious to hear how you like your layout. I have a window with space between walls similar to yours. Mine is between the clean-up sink/dish storage and the cooking wall. Is your baking hutch by the refrigerator? Gibby, Isn't it fun to have that ah-ha moment? When I first began looking for inspiration kitchens, yours was one of the first I clipped. I still love it! The darker stain color is very pretty, and similar to the color I may do for the island. ccombs, Your floor is gorgeous and so are your cabinets! The rays add a smile to the rift sawn floor. Cherry is beautiful, too. DH has made a lot of cherry furniture for our house. I am still drawn to the depth and beauty of the QS oak.

Since I have white with a cherry island, you might think that would be my automatic favorite, but I'm not loving it so much. Part of it may be that I like to do something different and make it my own (I also have a wall of blue cabients), but it might also be the counters. I have marble on top of my white and a black on top of my cherry. I really like the way it grounds the island, complements the glaze and distressing and adds to the older look (even though marble can be consistent with an antique too) -- and then after putting it all together, I discovered that had we reversed the counters, it would have been an entirely different look to have the white marble standing out in front of the blue. I think that mix of counters and the pop of white marble against cherry on the island is distracting in front of the white cabinets. If you go for white cabinets, I'd want to switch the counters rather than have fighting contrasts. If you go cherry with white hutch, I probably would not make the open shelves white (cherry, stainless, gless) and I would either have a cherry panel on the end of the sink wall or a wall color that doesn't read white. The white surfaces are fighting with the white hutch in the drawings and keeping the hutch from having full impact. I would do the cabinet on the island end -- make the space useful, but you've already gotten there. One thing I've found out on my island is that the 13" deep bases are incredible useful for keeping small appliances right at hand -- no digging to get one that is behind another. If the cabeints line up in such a way that you can use two, it's more money, but may be better use. I don't remember how you are working the island, but mine is straight with 21" deep on one side (all we could fit for sink base, trash and warming drawer) and 13" door on the other -- just in case that helps see a different possibility. My seating is a bar height table just across the end aisle. ;-) Keep in mind that for all the opinions, any of those choices is going to look good. Making it yours and loving the way it makes YOU feel is what makes it right for you.

willow, Please share where you found your white Cabinets and your source for the white Subway Tile, Soapstone and Marble - We love it, also! boxerpups, You are so blessed to have so many great windows! There is no room in our kitchen for a regular table, most of our meals will be in the adjoining Dining Room. Love your white kitchen and those gorgeous floors, what are they and your counters? Great peninsula, you have it all! Also, what brand is your Range, maybe we can find one like yours in Electric. Wonderful moldings above the cabinets! Thank you for all of the Pictures! Well - as of TODAY we officially own our new, Old House, so exciting, almost cried! Will have the keys on Friday, and we will take the accurate measurements of the kitchen. There may be room for a small wood island or a little Bistro table, placed under that window, just have to see them in place! My vote is for the white/cherry mix, it seems to have more pop than the maple. Love the look. It should work very nice with the other materials you have chosen.

I also vote for the white/cherry island mix. It will look gorgeous. Much better than the second option.. go for it!! Will the countertops be the same? they look more gold in the first option than in the second?

Congrats Suzie- I think you have found your kitchen! I love the white/cherry mix and it looks it will be beautiful. The inspiration picture is great too.

Did you decide to do the hood with spice cabinets down to the counter? Not sure if I asked this before but what cabinet line are you using? The cherry/white combo you showed looked just like my wellborn samples except our cabinets will be cherry and the island will be creamy white.

Anyway- I love it!

The granite is not finalized-- the first pic was one example- it will definatly be Light and golden! That was my hope when we started this project

I am partial to creamy white cabinets and a cherry island. I also am considering Blonde paint on my walls and have two long sample strips hanging on the walls as we speak.LOL

My cabinets are Linen White.

I find that the white is easy to clean even with four men in the house!

Sounds like everything's falling into place. It seems like you were having the normal problems when you try to like something that you thought would be more practical instead of what you really want...forcing it to come together for you and it just wouldn't. I'm SO glad you're going back to what you'll really love and be excited about. The truth is, your preferred kitchen will probably hold up just fine to your family's use. We have 8 kids and put in fir cabinets (pretty soft) and a cream colored island. The kids have cream colored built-ins in their rooms. The use of the fir gave me a little pause, but I was never concerned about the cream painted cabinets. I just don't worry that much about the wear on vertical surfaces.

Have to tell you that I particularly LOVE the cherry cabinets you've chosen. So rich. I also think the door style is very cool.

did i tell you we are building a whole house - uggg lol-- but actually this has been my biggest struggle and i finally feel like it is just coming together the way i want it!!! And hubby is happy if i'm happy

Suzienj - absolutely love your choices. If my DH would agree to painted cabs; I would pick the same exact choices. Hope you will post pics of your progress so I can see what I'm missing LOL!

We built a whole house, too. I know it can get tough, juggling and balancing materials throughout, making sure rooms flow and it all works. But as 'problems' go, what a blessing it is to be able to do that, huh? I found it so amazing to not only have permission, but be required to pick all new things to buy for us, which is certainly not something I was used to. Try to enjoy it! :-)

haha its true- we are so blessed-- just wished DH had more "opinions" he just wants me happy... ahhhhh

I just want my family in a house already (living in a tiny townhouse- 2 bedrooms- 4 of us) moving into this 4200 sq foot home-- hopefully around next christmas... ahhhhh

I finally today feel like things are falling into place- i'm sure by tomorrow i'll have another crisis- haha

But in the end- how amazing knowing i picked every last detail-- even if i mess it up- its my designs, my picks- so cool!

suzienj - I vote for the cream and cherry island. I guess that's a good thing at this point, since I'm building the same exact color cabinets as in your inspiration and sample photos as we speak! I almost went with maple or cherry (actually would have gone a bit more contemporary if I had gone that route) but came to realize how much more comfortable I felt with this palette. In hindsight, I think I could never get enthusiastic about some of the stains, especially the ones with orange undertones -many of them clash with my coloring! Also, the cream and chestnut go better with the design and furnishings in the rest of my home.

As far as wear and tear, I think the island is what would get the brunt of the rough treatment with kids as they grow, and that is in the stain. We are doing beadboard under the counter, in part for that very reason. Our cabinets are locally built custom - the KD says that they've been doing this for many years and that the newer techniques and materials are quite good and that their finish does not chip. If worst came to worst(I asked) they could repair.

I'm curious about your inspiration photo. What is the granite that is shown there? Is is the same one that you are doing? Also - our family room is open to the kitchen and is on a slab. We're trying to make a wood floor work, but I'm not sure it's going to. In that case, I'll be interested to hear what tile you end up choosing. I agree that a medium golden tone, perhaps a travertine or porcelain tile look alike would go great.

eastcoast mom-- I dont know the color on the island- but i can try to find out if you want to know?? The granite with our sampling was just one we randomly picked- i have not selected our granite yet- all i know is i want something light (we had uba tuba in our last house and the dark color always looked streaky) and i want the tone to be golden....
I would love to see your kitchen when its done!! Do you have your pallete (samples to show off?)

Don't rule out something you want in your kitchen because of your children. They won't be children forever, and in my (unsolicited) opinion, if we continue to raise our kids around things that are tailored to them never having to really take care of, or never being careful about things-- (cabinets can't be white, all corners of everything must be rounded) we are going to have a totally clueless and self absorbed generation of adults trying to take care of us in our dotage.

If you want a white kitchen, get a white kitchen, your kids will be in school a good part of the day by the time its all done anyway.
