Hi. May I join you at the Table? I have been lurking for a long time and have decided to register. I don't want to post for the first time in the middle of a thread, so am introducing myself here to you first. Now that I look at my user name I see that it looks like it has the word "mean" in it! Oh no! It is supposed to be "just me, angie".

Oh well. I hope you will see it the way I meant it. I'm not mean, honest!

If your town or city has anything like a home and garden show, the folks from Angie's List usually are there, and the price to join is much lower at the show than if you just Google'd it and joined that way (the membership renewal prices are lower at the shows, too). Yes, it costs to go to the shows, but usually there are newspaper and Groupon-type coupons available. I've ordered from Footsmart before; they're OK. I also order from Zappos -- just compare prices. Some items I've seen on Zappos were more expensive than other places even once you factor in shipping (I believe that Zappos' prices are slightly higher here and there because of that).

Once you find one or two good trades people, you can also ask them to recommend others. That has worked well for us. We joined Angie's list recently because we were going to do a pool remodel. My husband handled that so I don't know if he found it worthwhile, but there was one creepy aspect to Angie's list. A few months after joining, we got a phone call from them soliciting reviews on areas where they need more reviews - the list of what they were looking for started with neurologist, went through a bunch of medical specialties. Quite personal information to ask someone to reveal - I told him that after he had asked about the first few that I wasn't going answer questions about which medical specialists I've used and so he moved on reading the list. The next category wasn't any better and I told him that if I had a review I wanted to post, I'd go to their website and put it in, but I didn't care to spend any more time on the phone with him and didn't want to be quizzed about what services I use.

I don't believe in buying new stuff like that just to sell a house, i.e.: design stuff but which you can't take with you. If you're going to spend $200 on a light, 1) you're not going to get anything great, so the improvement won't mean much in terms of selling; 2) wouldn't you be better off offering potential buyers a $200 credit toward buying those lights themselves? THAT would be much bigger toward selling. Point is, I wouldn't do either. You go and buy a new light, they buy the house, and replace the light for something they like and is in their taste. You offer them $200 toward lights they prefer, and you've just gone and spent $200 on a purchase they'd have made anyway themselves. Replacing lighting is not an expensive thing to do, not like knocking down walls or replacing kitchen cabinets, granite, putting in a new heating system, etc. It's the BIG costs that turn buyers off, not the little design things. And make sure the house is spotless. I think that's the other big factor. Better to invest that $200 in a really good cleaning company to come in and really detail the place, i.e.: baseboards, windows, dusting tops of doors, behind toilets, etc., etc. This post was edited by Tibbrix on Tue, Dec 23, 14 at 13:31

Well, it's a beautiful house! Congratulations! I have always wanted an island with a Carrara marble top. I absolutely love how it looks....and that includes the scratches and the stains and the imperfectness of it.... Yes....get rid of the wallpaper...but I don't see anything else I would change without living in it for about six months. You'll grow accustomed to the ceilings. They're norm for most parts of the country...they save energy. Think twice about adding windows in the family room. If you do, you loose that corner for a chair...or built-in. Unless there's not enough light, of course. Congratulations, again.

Thank you for welcoming me! As advised, I've changed my username and I am now justme_angie. No more mean!

I don't live in Texas; I'm in New England. I hae a wonderful family of humans and pets, and work a full-time (sometimes more than "full time"!) job that I like Ok (jus glad to have a job these days). I like to travel, am a very novice gardener, and am enjoying life very much.
