What Have You Tried That You Never Had B4

I was just posting on Glenda's hominy message and someone mentioned being 60 and trying hominy for the first time. Got me to thinking, what have you tried on the recommendation of someone here at the KT? I never used capers before a recipe was posted here. And I like them! Does not have to be a food item either. Anything at all!

Pillow Mist

I posted here, that a friend just returned from the Danube River cruise, and she gave me a sleep tissue, they put in her room at nite.

Someome recommendede going to Bath and Body Works and buy their pillow mist.

I DID, and I love it. Sleep without fighting my pillow anymore.

Ruthie, year or so ago mentioned putting trash bags in the bottom of the trash can, thus, you don't have to go into the closet for them. They are THERE in the can.

Thanks so much for the info. Sorry it took me a few days to reply, my work schedule has been a little insane... I had thought leaf spot was possible, but the beginning stage of this fungus was like nothing I could find (picture or description) describing Septoria. It looked like a black/brown dust (raised) was covering the undersides of the leaves- like someone held the plant upside-down and spilled soil on it :) If two of you think that's what it is, then it must be. I thought rust both because that was the ONLY fungus that looked even remotely similar and we had rust on a jasmine vine planted about 6 feet away in the flower bed (this tomato is potted so it does not share soil with any plants). The good news is- after an all out assault of (Safer) fungicide (every 4 days) and seaweed- the plant appears to be in recovery. A couple of the young tomatoes appear to be a bit deformed so I'm going to keep a close eye on it. The leaf loss was quite extensive, so I may have a problem with sun scald. (btw, in a couple of the photos you can see the whole plant behind me- it's the potted plant on the white stand). QUESTIONs: If I start using Fish Emulsion with the seaweed now will it encourage some more leaf production to help the sun scald problem? Or will any new leaf growth be effected by the fungus? The plant is potted so I have not grown anything in the soil before, it must have picked up the disease at the nursery. This is my ONLY potted tomato and I'm noticing a few spots on my other tomatoes (planted in a garden), if I catch this fungus early enough will it contaminate the soil? Sorry if it was unclear, all of my plants are outside (I brought my laptop out and used the camera built into it to take the pics- GO MAC!!!) Thanks again for all the posts, diagnosing this little fungus had truly been driving me crazy!

guavalane Thank You. I want all the info I can get. Does your friend buy seeds and if so what varieties and where does he buy the seeds. etc. why higher ? How big are these. You are in a great warm long grow region. I am zone 5 and must plan carefully. So I am interested in what comes quickly and what takes a long time. I can probably do with plants to about 105 days as some pumpkins are 105. not sure on the maximum but it probably depends on the temperature. Right now it is cold here. high of the day below or near 50. just to give an idea. But of course all information is eagerly sought. how is the eating quality difference between winter melon and fuzzy gourd. I had a oriental melon gourd that I liked. It was pretty good. it grew sort of like a square long melon. the melon had 4 creases running the length that caused it to have a sort of square cross section. the crease was indented along the length. the melon was nice in soup. It might have been a winter melon but no white on the melon skin and it was ready very early. The skin was tough so it was easy to cook. I could put it into a microwave and after it was cooked the skin would come off in one piece instead of falling apart. I just grab the skin and pull it off. well more or less. worked great. the "melon" was nice and firm. light color. sort of clear when cooked. moisture came out of it. the moisture with the seeds was a little more sweet. but this was for cooking not for raw eating. Does anyone have any idea what it might have been. what kind of oriental melon or gourd. I saved some seed but then the seeds might be crossed with all the other stuff grown there. Mostly I want to know what it is so I can buy some good seed that is properly correct and not some half wild cross.

Patti, think of it this way....the dark green stems are left on to protect the tender part from damage and dessication. I've heard some TV cooks remark about freezing those stems for use when making stock. I've not done that but it sounds like a good idea. I save shrimp shells for stock! I love plums and always look forward to seeing them in the markets. I agree that this 'lemon plum ' is special. Plums don't have a very long shelf life, sadly, and bruise so easily. They shouldn't be picked when they are still little hard because they don't continue to get sweet once picked. They'll soften up but taste mealy and bland. They are picked much too early to withstand the rigours of the commercial market. I haven't gone exploring in the right grocery stores (lately) to find something new to me. I taught a college course one year about exotic, tropical, and world foods and for a fun assignnent challenged the class to find, research, and prepare for eating something that fullfilled the assignnent. It was a night class, so conducive to sharing a little meal. What fun! I had never tasted starfruit until that night....delicious. Students sleuthed out really neat grains, spices, fruits and vegetables. Luckily, our little city was multi-cultural....and larger cities very close by.

Sweet Monkey, I m also in the investigating edging / border. I ve had garden with and without. Without, the lawn guys just end up making the beds bigger and bigger or end up weed whacking your prize plants. Weeding is a never ending job but the right border edging goes along way in helping keep mulch in place etc. I personally love the flat natural stone path border. I can also see the more artistic borders in a more artistic garden. Oldmanroot, I reading on my phone so I can't see your picture that well but are those coral rocks? If so, I especially like them cause they give the perfect nod to a Florida bed! helen

I tried the Magic Eraser sponge, a few months back, for the first time - I wouldn't ever want to be without one again!!!

Until the summer I had never been to a swimming pool that had a gigantic slide but our new one does. I went down that slide once this summer and probably will never do that again.

canned pears for the first time. one jar didn't seal so had to start eating that one :-) good! part of kids' Christmas - hope they like! if not, they can give them back :-0

I haven't been here long enough to have a good answer, but I know I will in time.
Oh and dances in the garden.....I LOVE avocados, it surprised me to see someone had never tried them ! Have you made a BLT with them yet ? Makes a really good sandwich !

I have tried various foods my adult kids have recommended. They all live in big cities, and so they are at various ethnic or moderne restaurants regularly, and now THEY are introducing ME to foods. Mind you, these were 3 VERY FUSSY eaters as kids and teens.

I'm trying to like Brussel Sprouts. So far no luck.

My latest addition is Almond Butter on Toast for Breakfast.

Gayle, have you tried roasting brussels sprouts?
Potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips and brussels sprouts all roast wonderfully. They all sweeten by roasting.

I eat my brussels roasted too. I don't buy them often as it is only the youngest son and I that like them. I tried steaming them but they were not as good as roasted.

Well, we are expecting company for dinner tonight...any minute...and I am serving a new cheese with our drinks that I have never had before. Rougette. It's a soft cheese that has a strong aroma, looks like Brie.

How's that for something I have never tried before? I'll let you know how I and, everyone else likes it. I'm hungry...wish they would hurry up and get here.

The votes are in. OK, I was the only one who voted but, the Rougette gets two thumbs UP! It was wonderful. I will buy it again and again and again. Yummm, very creamy and smooth.

Gaylemarie, I'm not crazy about frozen Brussels sprouts. But I love fresh ones! Roasting is a great idea. So is cutting them in half and stir-frying or steaming. The trick is not to overcook them. Boiling too long makes them strong-tasting and mushy.

I never bought a microfiber cloth until I heard about them here. Now I have quite a stack, and I'm grateful!

I bought my first eggplant at the farmers market yesterday. I am trying it tomorrow. I might have had it as a kid, but don't remember it.
