Do you remember my post several weeks ago about when people buy sweet corn why, they stand in the grocery and take the shucks off? Well, finally Meijer has a sign up saying your sweet corn will be preserved longer or something like that if you do not take the husks off! They no longer have the big box there either for people to put ths shucks in. I say it is about time. How about your grocery store does it have a box for the corn shucks?

Not any more. I was tempted to ask for the refuse in the box for composting once. Never did.

I can honestly say that I have never heard of anyone doing this. (sitting here with jaw on floor)

CBS airs both Survivor and Amazing Race. Since Amazing Race has always aired on Sunday, and Survivor has always aired on Thursday, I highly doubt that Survivor would be moved to Sunday unless Amazing Race flops with it and ends up on Thursday. We watch both shows and have never heard that either one is being moved to a new day, other than the announcement two weeks ago that there would not be an episode of Survivor last week and this week it would shown on Wednesday (which is because of the "March Madness" basketball games). And it's too early for Survivor to start talking about when the finale will be shown.

Currently, you are required to only have one GFI outlet from one of the small appliance circuits. But with a 10' island, it would be a safety hazard to not have outlets somewhere close to both ends. The spirit behind the requirement is so that small appliances don't use extension cords draped everywhere. If you ever want to entertain and use the island as a buffet, it's best to have enough electrical on it to run the warmers, crockpots, and blenders that will be in use. I'd do a quad close to both ends, and maybe even a popup in the middle. That means you will need a dedicated circuit for your MW, and the GFI protected outlets from part of your 2 required small appliance circuits. Because electrical useage has done nothing but increase, I'd go ahead and have outlets from the second small appliance circuit as well. Or maybe outlets from one of the small appliance circuits plus a run of another island only GFI small appliance circuit. You're trying to use the two (or three) circuits to avoid overloading any one with demands. It's never fun just when the party is starting to have to go and flip a breaker and then try to re-arrange all of the juice suckers to not pop it again.

I feel for the hurt in your heart from the losing of your friend. It is hurtful to lose one who has become a dear friend. As well as one whom one has chosen as a special loved one, as one's second mate, and late in life. I expect that while building a relationship with another partner so late in life, there would be somewhat less connection, or lower commitment, as one would be certain that the relationship was going to be, of necessity, not a long-lived one. Aware that when one loves deeply ... the hurt is deeper when the loved one goes? Would that make one skittish about making too deep a commitment ... and, when we choose to do so, does it cut us off from the opportunity to participate in some of the greater joys in life? My first thought was that the second opinion could be wrong also, just because it could be that it was being honestly misdiagnosed . I agree that you have plenty of room to believe that the first vet was trying to con you, but it does not mean that the second vet could not be wrong. It happens, This business of cleaning an animals teeth is a big expense taht many are laying out. I think that it likely is something that may be quite valid but is over sold to pet people who seem to put their pets on par with kids nowadays. All of my animals are gone now, but I do remember that a visit to the vet was often on par in terms of expense with a car repair bill. Rarely was it less than a couple hundred dollars. It has only been in this century that vet dental care has taken such a leap forward. Probably was a special service that not many dogs got until now. Sure a dental problem in a dog must be as painful as a human one and I would not have hesitated to have it taken care of in one of my animals, if I knew. Yes, they do deserve care of their teeth just as they deserve other medical treatment when they are sick or in pain but that does leave room for some real exploitation of their vulnerable human companions. This might possibly be one of those cases where it is being used to exploit. Before anyone goes on to defame this vet, it is best to know for sure that you are right.

My local grocery store doesn't have a box for corn shucks, and I had never seen such a thing until a recent visit to our new Wal-mart. Everyone there was shucking the corn, and I was shocked!

I never shuck it until I'm going to fix it. It dries out to fast.

I don't shuck mine either but truthfully I have much bigger things to worry about than whether someone wants to shuck their corn in the store....I mean...what difference does it make? Are they causing a big line to form or blocking traffic ...I'm not being argumentative I just don't know why someone would care whether or if I decided to husk my corn.

I have never been able to understand that concept. I would never do that. Besides...who wants to finish their grocery shopping with corn shucking remnants on their hands? Ewwwwwwwwwwww! LOL

Alright. Let me be the one to ask. Why? Is it to reduce the weight so as to not pay for the husk? Or, is there another reason?

I for one want the husks ON. We soak them in water and cook them on the grill. They stay moist that way. Around here, they peel the husk about half way down to see if the corn is young or past time. Makes me mad either way. Just my 2c worth.

WalMart sells them by the ear. Monday, for 33 cents each.

Meijer's price today was 10 ears for two dollars, of course you don't have to buy ten ears to get the same deal. I think the reason people shuck the corn in the store is so they won't have the mess at home and they don't know that as soon as you shuck it, it starts going the other way. Yes, sometimes people stand in the way of the corn display and some even shuck it on the corn.

We don't have a box here so never seen anyone shuck them at the store. I take them home unshucked because I put all the husks in my compost pile.

You should see what a mess over 250 ears makes, lol! (All done in one day)

Thankfully DH takes to cobs to the cows - but I dumped the shucks in the grove. Didn't want the horses getting them.

I am so glad I don't have to pay for sweet corn.

Some grocery stores in CA have those boxes for corn husks.

I think people peel the husk back to see what the kernels look like before they buy them. You never know if the kernels are mature inside the husk or if there are worms or empty spots, ect. Now if they find a good ear and peel it and put it back, that would chap me. Kinda like peeling a banana and then trying to put the peel back on so it doesn't ruin. Doesn't work that way. But I have seen people checking out the kernels before they buy.

Several stores here do it. If I'm cooking it the same day, I shuck it in the store. Publix is good about keeping the bin empty and clean. Doesn't seem to hurt it--but to each his own,as Ruthie said.

I've never seen anyone shucking or even a box nearby the corn display in any market I've ever been in.

The reason they do it is because they don't have to dispose off at home.

They do that at our local corn place.

It does dry them out. I take them home from the local corn place and do it myself as my dad has a compost pile.

I do'nt like dry corn.

they also love to check for the huge big kernels, they forget corn is no longer that way. Best to have small kernels,

My Publix has a huge lined trash can in front of the corn. I leave the husks on, but peel them back slightly to make sure the corn is yellow. Yellow and whites seem to be mixed together (or the customers mix them up).

we buy from the local farmer's market...learned from martha stewart years ago it wasn't good for the corn...i go for size of the ears..
