I'm a licensed driver!

I used to have my license years ago, but it expired in 1999 and I just never renewed it because Claude did all the driving and I liked it that way (that was way pre-kids). Too much time passed for me to just renew it, so I had to start over from the beginning.

I wrote the test to get my driving permit over 2 years ago now, but was in no rush to get my license because our car was a standard and I can't drive a standard (and didn't really have any opportunities to learn without the kids). But because we're having this 3rd baby, we recently bought a van and I booked an appointment for my driving test. I NEED to be able to have a vehicle during the days to tote Sophie around to her classes and groups and stuff. I took the road test this morning and passed it! I hit the curb while parallel parking and had to start over, but I passed anyhow. :)

After that, I drove Claude to work and the kids and I have been driving around all afternoon. It's been VERY nice. I don't feel stranded anymore. We won't have to get rides to all the homeschooling field trips and stuff, and I can take care of shopping and other errands during the day while Claude's at work.

(This is a big deal for me)

I totally agree with MacT and its why I've been refusing to let anyone scan my DL which you are allowed to do! Just insist! Read this which I posted somewhere else just to help out: "Hi, I just found your post because I just got home from Target and figured for once I'd google and see if anyone else had this problem. I'm posting this just to tell you a few things you can do. I periodically jump into target to do my shopping because its right next to my house. On the occasion I do that and grab a bottle of wine they always ask for my license, The first time over a year ago, she took it and swiped, I asked her right away, why cant you just look at it and see I'm WAY old enough?? She couldnt answer. Well as an experiment I went back the next week and did the same thing, only this time when she asked for my license, I said you can look at it but you may not swipe it. She said I have to, I said NO you dont. All you need to do is verify my age, and in over 20 years that used to be done with your eyes,m NOT a computer scanner. She called over the manager, and to my surprise, the manager keyed something in, and she politely gave me back my license. THere was some sort of note the pc generated on my receipt. Apparently you CAN refuse to let them scan, just insist. You need not put your items back on the shelf. I just did it again today, and of course there are people behind who sigh, because I am stubborn about not letting htem HARVEST my information off scanning my id. But I assured them, one day you'll thank me:) SO, let them check your id, and dont let them scan it. Make them call someone over. Do you advocate a mandatory driver's license test after a certain age? Yes, absolutely. Written test? Yes, for basic knowledge and cognitive reasoning. Road test? Absolutely. Vision test? Absolutely. If you do, at what age should these tests begin? 70 years. My mother set a very good example for me when she turned in her license at 74. She told me that her reflexes were diminished, as was her eyesight. She was unsure if she could react properly and in a timely manner in certain situations. I thought it was a very brave and selfless decision. We live in the "country" and giving up her license was a hardship for her, but she had such valid reasons that I admired her strength. She looked for alternate means of transportations and adjusted her lifestyle to accommodate it. Last year I was getting gas and there was an elderly couple there, as well. They were in a large sedan (thank goodness), and as I was filling up the gentleman emerged from the station after paying for his gas. It took him the entire time I was filling up my tank to walk to his car, using a cane. He obviously was having difficulty walking and when he reached his car had trouble getting into the driver's seat. He started the car and moved very slowly towards the exit. By that time I had finished filling up and paying and was behind him at the exit. I watched as he proceeded to pull out into the road right in front of an oncoming car, almost causing an accident. He hadn't looked either way, and I know this because I was watching him to see what he'd do. I took his license plate number and called the local police on my cell phone. I let them know our location and that the gentleman was a hazard on the road. I asked that they at least attempt to observe him. I don't know if anything came of it but I would like to think so. I certainly sympathize with many seniors with regard to their independence, but I also think it's a selfish decision on their part not to be willing to give up their license if they aren't capable of driving safely. They're putting many people at risk. I'm 56 and I will gladly do all the above at 70 years of age. Gladly, willingly, and responsibly.

What a waste! But I guess he's gotta do it! I know when my kids moved from ND to Ia I think they only gave 30 days to get everything changed over? I could be wrong, but that had to be vehicle and drivers licenses!

I don't know what you're applying for, nor how important it is to you, but I definitely WOULD NOT fax copies of documents like that to them. Having been the victim of a theft earlier this year, I'm extremely cautious about keeping my personal info very, very safe and private. I don't share any of that stuff with anyone these days. But if this is something you need, you may have no choice. Is there any other way to handle the transaction?

Congrats Nicole..It's wonderful to have that feeling of independance!
I think the only way you managed without this long, is because you live in a city.
I wish we had better public transportation and things were within walking distance! But we are pretty rural...

Nicole...my oldest daughter was going into kindergarten when I learned to drive. I was 28 years old. I had always had someone to drive me around, and didn't feel the need for a car.

Good for you, Nicole! I hope you have a lot of fun zipping around and getting things done when you WANT them done, not when you CAN get them done. I'm proud of ya! Taking those tests can be nerve wracking, for sure.

It surely gives you a lot more freedom, Nicole ... you'll need it, with the little ones.

Can Claude get to work by transit, leaving the van at home during that time, or do you have to drive him and pick him up, on a day that you may want to use it?

I've been surprised, over the years, at how many, mainly females, can't drive.

My mechanic's wife Chris was a teen in a congregation where I ministered, 40 years ago. Her Mom, who lived on a farm several miles from the village and the city, had never learned to drive. A while after her Dad died, a few years ago, I said that I thought that I'd go visit her mother and get her out on the road to learn to drive.

She warned me to not ... as her aunt had made a similar suggestion, to be told to mind her own business, if they were to remain friends.

P.S. I just stumbled over a rock ... that's so large that it's a wonder that it didn't hit me in the face ...

... remembering my recent dilemma over the need to re-confirm my driver's licence ...

... maybe I'd better consult with Chris' Mom ...

... as to how to manage to live in the country ... when one can't drive!

Maybe, even at this late date, it might be possible for me to learn something!

I am so happy for you Nicole! That is an awesome accomplishment!

I am also learning how to drive. (Well I already knew how to but..) I have had my learners since I was 17 but never really seemed to need my actual license. Now it's getting more needful with two kids in activities and my immense desire to get away from this madhouse now and then. :)

I am so NERVOUS though. After I finish my drivers course I'll be taking my test...probably in Sept. sometime. I get shaky just thinking about it.

Well, anyway I am so pleased for you. Job well done! Do something great to celebrate!

That's great! I think it's an important thing for everyone to know-You'll definitely have more freedom now, or as much as you can with 2-3 kids in tow! LOL
