I'm a licensed driver!

I used to have my license years ago, but it expired in 1999 and I just never renewed it because Claude did all the driving and I liked it that way (that was way pre-kids). Too much time passed for me to just renew it, so I had to start over from the beginning.

I wrote the test to get my driving permit over 2 years ago now, but was in no rush to get my license because our car was a standard and I can't drive a standard (and didn't really have any opportunities to learn without the kids). But because we're having this 3rd baby, we recently bought a van and I booked an appointment for my driving test. I NEED to be able to have a vehicle during the days to tote Sophie around to her classes and groups and stuff. I took the road test this morning and passed it! I hit the curb while parallel parking and had to start over, but I passed anyhow. :)

After that, I drove Claude to work and the kids and I have been driving around all afternoon. It's been VERY nice. I don't feel stranded anymore. We won't have to get rides to all the homeschooling field trips and stuff, and I can take care of shopping and other errands during the day while Claude's at work.

(This is a big deal for me)

Yeah - one evening we were having dinner at a little diner down the road. Seated next to me at the counter was a nicely dressed gentleman who asked me if I would read the menu to him, as he was blind. Obviously, I did, and helped him through his dinner as needed. He started complaining when the waitress was slow in bringing him his food - he had to be sure and leave before the sun went down because he had a hard time driving in the dark....... Guess if we want to be safe, our defensive driving skills need to always be extra sharp!

I have seen many sites that give the information on the vin numbers but also need to verify the drivers license as well. I had a situation recently where the drivers license couldn't be verified. I know the privacy act has stopped most of the information you used to be able to verify about someone in a situation like renting an apt or buying a car.

mimi boo...praying regarding this situation, too! I just read of others needing prayers on here and was saying it seems there is so many people needing prayers lately...this is the most unusual situation and it seems to throw a monkey wrench into every little thing when there is distance to deal with besides...things will go smoother if you can stay calm and collected (that'll take prayer, too, to be able to do so!) I don't know what you're applying for, nor how important it is to you, but I definitely WOULD NOT fax copies of documents like that to them. Having been the victim of a theft earlier this year, I'm extremely cautious about keeping my personal info very, very safe and private. I don't share any of that stuff with anyone these days. But if this is something you need, you may have no choice. Is there any other way to handle the transaction?

Congrats Nicole..It's wonderful to have that feeling of independance!
I think the only way you managed without this long, is because you live in a city.
I wish we had better public transportation and things were within walking distance! But we are pretty rural...

Nicole...my oldest daughter was going into kindergarten when I learned to drive. I was 28 years old. I had always had someone to drive me around, and didn't feel the need for a car.

Good for you, Nicole! I hope you have a lot of fun zipping around and getting things done when you WANT them done, not when you CAN get them done. I'm proud of ya! Taking those tests can be nerve wracking, for sure.

It surely gives you a lot more freedom, Nicole ... you'll need it, with the little ones.

Can Claude get to work by transit, leaving the van at home during that time, or do you have to drive him and pick him up, on a day that you may want to use it?

I've been surprised, over the years, at how many, mainly females, can't drive.

My mechanic's wife Chris was a teen in a congregation where I ministered, 40 years ago. Her Mom, who lived on a farm several miles from the village and the city, had never learned to drive. A while after her Dad died, a few years ago, I said that I thought that I'd go visit her mother and get her out on the road to learn to drive.

She warned me to not ... as her aunt had made a similar suggestion, to be told to mind her own business, if they were to remain friends.

P.S. I just stumbled over a rock ... that's so large that it's a wonder that it didn't hit me in the face ...

... remembering my recent dilemma over the need to re-confirm my driver's licence ...

... maybe I'd better consult with Chris' Mom ...

... as to how to manage to live in the country ... when one can't drive!

Maybe, even at this late date, it might be possible for me to learn something!

I am so happy for you Nicole! That is an awesome accomplishment!

I am also learning how to drive. (Well I already knew how to but..) I have had my learners since I was 17 but never really seemed to need my actual license. Now it's getting more needful with two kids in activities and my immense desire to get away from this madhouse now and then. :)

I am so NERVOUS though. After I finish my drivers course I'll be taking my test...probably in Sept. sometime. I get shaky just thinking about it.

Well, anyway I am so pleased for you. Job well done! Do something great to celebrate!

That's great! I think it's an important thing for everyone to know-You'll definitely have more freedom now, or as much as you can with 2-3 kids in tow! LOL
