Yours is being done as an elective surgery, which is a much better way to do things. My husband (age 63) is two weeks post-op after his very first surgery (other than oral surgery to remove a wisdom tooth). He had an emergency appendectomy. It's very uncommon for a man "his age" to have an appendectomy, much less on an emergency basis.

Just remember, though, the hospital will keep you on a liquid diet (and won't discharge you) until you are able to pass gas. That's because after general anesthesia, they want to make sure the little gremlins in your bowels have woken up and are "doing their thing." One thing that really helps is mint tea, so have your hubby bring some tea bags with him. :-)

Been the bladder cancer route. Hope yours is better. They can do amazing things.

Good wishes for your surgeon not to have had a row with his/her spouse that morning. And for being at the peak of skill that day, as for all of your other caregivers.

Most surgeries go well and turn out well - it's the ones that don't that make the news.

Good thoughts for you and your doctors!! My friend had to have emergency bladder surgery after a C-section complication. Her doctors did a great job and she has had no problems. Here's to a speedy recovery too!

You sound like my hubby. He has never had surgery till this spring, when he got his prostate removed. They sent him home the next morning, as the nurses said it's always nice to recuperate at home.

I'm BACK! Yep, 5 hours on the operating table (which is why they only schedule two of these operations every other week) and then 4 days for recovery. Came home yesterday at 10:00 and first thing took a good shower. Couldn't wait to do that. Don't know who is happier to have me home - George or the dog! Lily went nuts once she realized who it was coming through the door.

I felt like a little kid again when I was finally able to have a BM (one of the requirements for release) and wanted to tell the nurse "Look momma I make potty!"

The doctor was extremely pleased by my progress. Stay in hospital post-surgery is 4 to 7 days, the average being on the 7 day side. Hurray for me! I got the nickname speed demon once I started doing my walking around the corridors. The nurses loved me and said I was one of the best patients they've had. Much as I like them, I wanted out of there.

Hopefully next week they'll be able to remove the catheter and I'll be fully functional. In the meantime I have my "day" bag and my "night" bag. You might know it they were all our of bejeweled bags! Dam. Had to settle for ugly old plastic.
