My dad when he turned 80 years old, he only needed to go to doctors and have him fill out tons of papers.
He didnt need to do any driving test at all.

My mom turns 80 this year.

I have always said that when I turned 80, that I would hang up my keys, but the closer I get to it, the more I am having second thoughts.

Hope it came out okay. My Mom quit driving around age 70 when she bumped her car into a sign post in a parking lot.

Sorry to have been so late, folks.

Started just before 9, each of about 16 got a number, she brought us all to a desk one by one, checked our licence.

We each had about 20 page booklet in large type which we went through, concentrating on issues that seniors need to be concerned about, especially related to decreasing capabilities, e.g. seeing, hearing, reaction times, e.g. book says have 2-second interval between you and the vehicle that you're following - better have three seconds for us.

Then we had a break, about 10:30 and were to be back by 10:45 for our written test. At10:40, having found where the cafeteria was (downstairs) a lady said she'd have liked a coffee, but didn't have time to get one ... I said that, sure she did, but when she demurred, I went down and got two, arriving back just as the group were taking their places around the large table.

Twenty sign illustrations for which we were to choose one of 4 meanings. Also twenty questions, with four choices of answer.

They were quite easy, no ambiguities, I did them all, didn't check, as I was pretty sure I hadn't goofed any, was the first to have mine checked.

I asked the lady if we got a gold star if we got all right and she said that she was thinking of getting a happy face with an illustration of a car.

I got 'em all right, the tester gave me the necessary papers in sealed envelope - I'm to leave it sealed, deliver to licence renewal office: was finished by a few minutes to 11. Thirty Dollars to renew for two years, then I have another group gathering with the tester.

Went out to wait for my friend who'd brought me (in case they lifted my licence), then gone shopping. No need - my temporary licence is good till the 13th.

Read a booklet of general instructions for seniors, noted that they sell "Driver's Handbook" (for about $14.95) and it can be found in bookstores, etc. ... and I went back to suggest to the lady that they also add when reprinting that it can be found in many libraries, as well.

My friend returned after a period and I picked up my car at his place and went my way, delivering a frig. and deep fryer to a friend to install in his chip wagon.

I had some other errands to run.

Bonus: 10% cream for coffee, usually about $3.00/litre (slightly over a quart) is to be $1.99 for next week.

Thanks to all for your good thoughts - when the day comes that I can no longer drive, I was wondering last year when for a couple of weeks I could only drive with a licensed driver riding beside me whether I could revisit my opinion that I could no longer live here ... and didn't see how I could manage, especially in winter.

Though some people keep a vehicle, licensed and insured, then have someone drive them on errands from time to time. Old uncle did - for a couple of years, I think.

Something was said the other day about it costing $95.00 per week to operate a car.

Not my 21 year old car, it don't (even with $1,000./year for insurance)!

I was pretty sure that it would go O.K. ... but somewhat concerned ... I think mainly because of my awareness of the major effect on my life were I not to pass.

Actually, I was rather surprised at the low level of concern when the value of my assets fell so far last fall. I think mainly because it didn't put my lifestyle at risk ... not anything like as much as would having my licence cancelled.

I admire you for your healthy, practical attitude about life and the changes which occur as we age.

I think that part of my reason for the lack of serious concern about the loss in value of the asset - no, reduction: not a definite loss unless I'd sold then - was/is that I've been a personal financial advisor for about 25 years, so know a good deal of the ins and outs of that game, including that the markets usually recover, if one is willing to be patient and give them some time.

But - that's the end that relates to the head. When it hits one in one's own wallet, often that's different. Well, not really in my wallet, either, for the reduction in value was not in the portion of the assets that I figured to need in the next short term. That would have had an impact on my psyche of a different level all together.

When one hits you where it doesn't hurt ... it's a differen story than when they hit you where it does!
