Books on iPod?

Once school starts, I want to start walking outside a lot more. I like listening to music on my iPod, but am thinkng maybe I could branch out into books. I used to listen to books on tape and liked them. I could use the CDs but it would be easier to carry my tiny iPod instead of a CD player. Has anyone ever downloaded the books from iTunes? I assume they work just like downloaing the songs? Are they in a separate library?

Many libraries provide a free service that allows you to download audio books over the internet. The largest vendor to public libraries is a company called "Overdrive" (you may see that name on your library's website) though there are a few others too. If your library provides this service, you would download AND transfer the files to your iPod using the free accompanying software.

Another alternative is that many libraries have audio books in CD format that you can check out. Using your PC, iTunes will "rip" the files (transfer the sound on the CDs to digital files on your PC) and then transfer those files to your iPod, again so that you can listen to them.

I haven't used the iTunes books There is also Audible for books. haha I bought my iPod to listen to music then a whole new world of Podcasts opened up. I listen to the Food Programme on BBC, British History Podcast, Good Job Brain which is a trivia podcast, and Kitchen Cafe from BBC Scotland. So many interesting podcasts out there that you can download so you have them with you when you need them. I delete them as soon as I listen to each episode.

Yes, you can put an outlet in the cabinet (consider putting in multiples/plugmold so you can use it as a charging station for all your small electronics and phone type thingies). You can also wire your kitchen for speakers before you put in the cabinetry. There are also wireless speakers. My speakers are in the ceiling.

I don't have an IPod, so no help there. As for making sure you don't buy duplicate CD's, my solution is not so much maintaining & carrying around an inventory of what I already have...but carrying a wishlist of what I want, or "need" if you work on building collections. If it made my wishlist, I know I don't already own it. If it made my wishlist, I know I've thought about it and want it more than any impulse buy and it serves a purpose for my music tastes and collection. If I see a CD in a store that's not on my wishlist & could be an impulse buy...I DON'T buy it!!!! I write it down on my wishlist for the next planned trip...or to verify, or to think about it or research it in the event I discover I really don't need or want it in the next few days. I've had to discipline myself to do this, but it absolutely works for me in stopping wasted money on impulse buys. If the CD is released, remember that IT WILL BE THERE THE NEXT TIME, and if it's not, there are so many other ways to buy the CD online or in other stores. You're not missing any opportunities if you walk away from impulse CD purchases.

We have a Roku ... the company I work for has a wireless chip inside so a number of us at the office were given the Roku as a Christmas present a couple years ago. The Roku is very, very easy to use. Setup probably took all of five minutes. When Netflix was not charging to stream videos, it was a very good deal but now they charge $8 for mail order DVDs and $8 for streaming. Old movies aren't all that hard to find in regular programming with the cable service we have but I love watching documentaries, which are harder to come by, so streaming is good for that.
