I just saw that when I turned on the "puter"....Don't you wonder what goes through a person's head to resort to using a gun on someone else.......And then to do it in such a terrible way to harm so many......

Wow--in crowded NYC it could have been a lot worse. I hadn't known about that. Now NBC is saying two were killed.

Apparently the shooter did kill his ex-boss, shooting him in the head. Fortunately, the others injured will likely survive.

Shooter reportedly was fired a year ago, lives in Manhattan.

I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly think this sort of action could make things better for them. Of course, suicide by cop is often a possibility.

Sadly it is *news* because of where it happened, and to whom.

Kids are killing kids with cheap guns every day in Chicago's inner city -- and in gangs everywhere.

I agree, Chisue. Even our our relatively small town somebody's shooting someone else every weekend. Last summer 5 teenagers lured this boy (age 15) over to the house of one of them, bludgeoned him, shot him and burned his body over a campfire. Then they dismembered what was left and threw it somewhere.

Bet you didn't read about that in the NY Times, but we'll read about the NY killing in our Ocala Star-Banner, I betcha'.

3 of those 5 teenagers are now spending life in prison with no chance of parole. Don't know about the other two.

I've been at my daughter's that has the 3 little boys. If the TV is on, it's something they're doing w/ the Wii, or some cartoon channel. I go into withdrawals there. So, no, didn't hear a thing about it.

Chicago is experiencing a spate of killings lately. They do not let this "tie up" the city even though the statistics are grim.

The nine bystanders that were wounded were apparently hit by police bullets,collateral damage. So the man had only one victim in mind. He put 5 shots into him according to reports but did not fire on anyone else.

We will never know what caused him to go off the deep end and shoot his former employer. He's dead.

You have to wonder why bystanders were in the line of police fire however. One news piece said bullets ricocheted off anti terrorist planter boxes.

I heard yesterday when I was in a patient's room. Didn't get to hear much of it...busy day yesterday. Scary world we live in.

I live in Long Island, just 50 miles from the center of Manhattan. I turned on TV at noon Friday for a weather forecast, all they had on was coverage of this nut. And there were NYC Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly getting in some "face time" saying how this shows NY is prepared for any terrorist attacks.

More acurately, "Chicago" isn't experiencing a spate of killings. The ENGLEWOOD area of Chicago is.

This is where our DIL taught junior high (to kids as old as 16), one of whom was finally expelled after threatening to kill her with a knife (after being suspended for threatening another teacher).

It's a whole 'nother world. The shootings are gang-related, but nobody is safe. Very few of DIL's students lived with even one relative. School was their only 'safe place', and often the only source of nourishing food.

Have any of you watched "The Wire"? That HBO series about Baltimore had it spot-on about the gangs, the police, the schools. In one scene a seasoned teacher explains to a new recruit that on Mondays the kids come in traumatised and exhausted. By Tuesday you see a few smiles. Wednesday is the best day. By Thursday they're alreading dreading the weekend. Friday is grim.

It's a waste of time and money trying to help these kids the way we did it in the past. My 'solution' is for the public schools to offer boarding school to parents who want to see their children have better lives. (Same rules as private boarding schools regarding limited visits, rights to kick a kid out for cause.)

We're already feeding these kids and paying out child support. Think of the savings for police, hospitals, prisons. Think of breaking the cycle of hopelessness for the ones who want to learn another way to live.

yeah, Friday night there were 19 shootings in Chicago, in just hours. In Seattle, in the first 5 months, there were more shootings than in the previous whole year. There were 9 killings I think. A whole lot more since then. It's crazy!

I don't want to argue with you, patti, because I don't know what your motivation is, but the story about the boy lured to his death was all over the news at the time. You seem angry to think the story wasn't covered well, but in fact it was. I remember it, and you can google it to see for yourself.

My daughter called to tell me she had to walk to work because the buses were not running down 5th ave. and that she was okay.
