My opinion? I've interviewed and hired (or not hired) many people. My opinion is that, regardless of the dress code where you're interviewing, that dress code is for the people that work there. You're not one of them yet.

I believe that one should dress respectfully as a not-yet-employee. In my business, I expected people (men and women) to be in a suit (or dress pants/skirt/dress and jacket). Once you're "one of them", you can dress like one of them.

Whether or not your husband has to wear a suit, I don't know. I guess not, but how about khakis, a nice long sleeved and collared shirt (light blue would be nice) and a sport jacket (dark blue would be nice).

ditto Suzieque. I always wear my best, cleanest business suit (a skirt suit, I'm female :) Even to our local grocery chain when I applied for a "second" job while at university. Good luck on the interview hubby!

I agree with Suzi. Although places now are so casual, especially in a warehouse environment, when you are the one interviewing, you have to be a notch above.
Suzi's version would be great, but you can work around what ever you have. It should be clean, pressed and current.
You wouldn't want the interviewer distracted because he/she is looking at a very outdated outfit.

My rule of thumb is to dress for one position higher than what you are interviewing for.
In this case a pair of tan pants and button down shirt or nice polo...tucked in with a belt. (no wrinkled clothes!)
Brown casual shoes would be acceptable, but no sneakers, shorts, t-shirts or sandals.
Remind him to leave his cell phone in the car.

I can see that you ladies have rather limited experience working in a serious warehouse.

First of all, contrary to the common notion, in a serious warehouse there is no casual dress and you describe it.

OSHA has some very specific rules regarding what you can or cannot wear in a warehouse.

Shorts, tank tops, muscle shirts, sleeveless shirts and exposed undergarments and shirt tails are prohibited.

Long pants are required, and they may not have cuffs.

Have you ever wondered why some tee shirts have a pocket? Convenient place for your cigarettes right. WRONG! years ago OSHA ruled that Tee shirts were undergarments and they were prohibited as external garments in the industrial environment including construction trades & warehouses.

To counter that rule Haines started making tee shirts with pockets. The addition of a pocket made it an outer garment and they captured the industrial Tee shirt market for a long time.

Work shoes are a must. No flip-flops, sandals, or tennis shoes, and in most warehouses they require safety toed shoes.

Now having sat behind the desk doing job interviews I can tell you first hand, no matter what line of work you are applying to, if you want to impress the interviewer, dress to fit the type of work you seek.

If you go in to apply as a warehouseman wearing a suit & tie their first impression is "here is a school kid that wouldn't know a days work if I showed him" or you may be interviewed by a guy who is job scared and seeing you in a suit he is afraid your too smart and will take his job in a short time.

If you want to really impress the interviewer show up for your interview looking like your ready to go to work right now.

Blue jeans are fine as long as they are not all ragged out. Another great choice is a pair of "Dickies" work slacks in dark Blue or black, and a sport shirt with sleeves. Be sure to have a couple pens in the pocket because there is a lot of paperwork in warehousing.

Just some real-life experience: My daughter works in a food warehouse. They provide her with a work uniform- heavy cotton pants and a short sleeve pullover shirt with the company logo. She is required to not wear open shoes . I don't know how she dressed for the interview.

So far the majority says to go dressed above what you would wear if you already had thejob. I think this shows you are taking the interview seriously.
I do agree with lazypup, that a suit and tie in this case would not be appropriate, but I don't think jeans are the answer for any interview.

I learned to never "out dress" your boss/interviewer person.
Of course, that's a little tough as you don't know what
they are going to wear! lol But I think all of the above have good answers... no suite how ever, unless he is
interviewing for manager... but even then? I don't know.

When I interviewed for the factory job (10 years ago) I wore black slacks and nice blouses, dress shoes, earrings. Even though I knew it was for a factory job I wanted to look nice

When I got hired, they told me that because I dressed nicely and handled myself well, I got hired. I'd seen others come in (men and women) in sloppy jeans and t-shirts because it was for a factory job. They didn't get hired.

You can't go wrong with nice khaki pants and a button down shirt. I love a black polo shirt with khaki.

I believe you dress for the occasion. Best foot forward.

Call me odd, but when I interviewed for employees, I always took a brief look at their shoes and hands. It was a detail thing for me. They didn't need to be manicured, but some acknowledgement to personal care. Pressed clothes can go in this order too. Am no longer working, I still have this habit.

With today's casual and the environment applying for..... It would be fine to wear a new polo shirt with coordinating slacks and nice blazer. Nothing loud or with printing.

He should make sure what level the person is interviewing him and a bit about the company. Also if he will end up with other people interviewing. Regardless of the position.

Hmmm....regardless of the type of job, I would dress nicely for an interview. It wouldn't really occur to me that I should dress up or down more for a specific job. I also wouldn't worry about out dressing your interviewer. There's no rule that you have to match them. Simply put, they can dress how they like, you can't. They may be hauling boxes in the afternoon, you're not. With that said, I think a suit is fine. If you can't invest in that or don't have one, I would do the khakis, buttoned down shirt with a jacket and tie. You only make one first impression. What's the worse they could think... that you are over dressed? Way better that, than under.

Listen to Lazypup. He is spot on. DH is in the machine trade, DSIL has done trucking and warehouse work. Wearing a suit or overdressing would not play well in seeking those types of employment. Neat and clean yes. DSIL has long hair. He just pulls it back into a ponytail.

You dress for the role. DS gets his jobs dressing for the employer. He's in IT Network Security. He dresses like a "geek". Trendy expensive jeans and black t shirts. Once in a while he dresses up for those hiring who don't understand what he does. He's very good at reading the situation. But for those who do "get it" he would look ridiculous showing up in a suit and tie for an interview. He wouldn't be taken seriously. It would look like his mommy dressed him.

Neat and clean, well spoken and mannered matters most.

So the interview was this morning and he wore jeans, a nice polo type shirt and black boots and a black belt. Pending background check and drug screen he is hired supposedly.

Thanks! I pretty much went with lazypup's advice since he said he was familiar with the situation. I too would think that different jobs would require different dress for the interview.

I see people at job fairs on the news and I swear they look like they are homeless/street people some of them.

I think his choice was just fine...appropriate. I think overly dressed is just as unacceptable as under dressed. Sal Gal pretty much said what I would have said and I think your hubby's choice was perfect.

I think it depends on the job you are applying for. If you are applying for a plumbers apprentice, a suit would not be what I would wear. There are a lot of people who don't even own a suit. For a warehouse job, I would think clean jeans and a nice shirt would be alright. The things I would not wear would be dirty wrinkled clothes, sweats and dirty hair. We stopped at my step daughter's home for a visit and the grand daughter was getting ready to apply for a job at a car dealer ship. She came out in an outfit with her belly showing. I told her I don't think that is appropriate for apply for a job unless it is a bar. She said this is the way people dress. I told her not when you are applying for an office job or dealing with customers who are mostly seniors and married people. Her mother said she is right, go change.
