Second Interview for Job

My daughter has a second interview for a teaching job. She said the principal of the school called and told her the interview will be very informal with a tour of the school and lunch. What can she expect from this interview? Is there some way to prepare for this interview? Do you think there will be other applicants there? While I have heard of second interviews, I've never heard of second interviews over lunch with teachers only those in the business sector.

Often time in schools, especially private schools, they have the members of the dept and/or dept. head. interview the candidate. We had second interviews and third interviews. Even though she was told it will be very informal, she should treat it as serious and be prepared to talk about herself and her teaching philosophy and even though everyone may be very casual, remember that she's being evaluated. Good luck to her.

I don't think she should "dress down" too much even though the principal said it was informal. Other teachers from her grade level or department may be there to get to know her a bit as well. Best wishes to your daughter.

Gardeningmusician, I just wanted to say that I think you are a great person for not responding to an email while angry. I can tell from your posts that this school missed out in a major way by not hiring your husband. I guess I am kind of confused by their policy, because I feel like they are saying that Christians only send their children to Christian schools. They aren't turning an applicant away based on religious beliefs, but based on where his kids attend school. That little bit of information doesn't even begin to tell them about the person he is or what his religious beliefs are, if that is truly what they wanted to know. I just don't get it. For example, I personally think children can learn best how to be a true Christian by being in a public school environment. It is a great place for them to learn how to be compassionate for others, play with all kinds of children from many different backgrounds and just quietly lead by example. Character is tested every day in a public school. There are plenty of Christian families that are not in a Christian school. Also, not all Christians can afford to send their kids to private schools, but that does not mean they are less of a Christian. That school's policy is plain crazy. No one should decide who to interview based on where their kids go to school, how does that bit of information define us as a person? You have handled this situation with total grace.

Petaloid, I really hope you're right! I REALLY want this job. It would also cut my daily commute from a total of 1 1/2 hours (100 miles) to 30 minutes (25 miles). That would be great too!

I would wear business casual for this type of interview. I think a suit is too formal for most interviews unless it's at a big business.

Well I'm done with the first part. I don't want to say too much in case someone from the firm reads this forum. But I could have definitely gone casual -- I was immediately shown to a conference room and given the test. The only employee I saw was a guy wearing a t shirt and cargo shorts who met me at the door and handed me the test and collected it at the end. And the test was surprisingly hard given the level of position I applied for so who knows if there will even be an interview. Oh well -- even if it nothing comes of it, it was definitely an interesting way to dip my toes in the job market.

Chessey is right. If she's called back for a second interview it means that at least she's passed all the basic qualifications required for the job- certification in whatever grade or subject she's applying for.

My guess is this interview is to see how she might 'fit' into the existing school culture - not based on her resume but more on her personality. Is she familiar with this school and the community? Is she aware of any pertinent issues that might come up during an informal discussion - is this a contract year? Is she interested in taking on additional duties - monitoring a club, coaching sports, serving on any of the school committees? Some of these things might not come up during a formal interview but this is an opportunity to find out more about her interests.

Just wanted to let you all know that she got the job. The interview lasted about 3 hours and it was definitely a get to know you type event. Even though it is summer and most teachers are off right now, she met a lot of teachers that were there for various reasons. She is very excited because this is just the place that she wanted to work and for the grade levels she was shooting for. Thanks all for the great advice. It is a load off her mind not having to go for more interviews. I can't believe how demanding job hunting can be. It really took up a lot of her time this summer and it finally paid off. Thanks again.
