Frog got tough with the cat

Frog and Nephew were watching the Mars lander come down and the cat came over to check out Nephew...and Frog got tough with the cat...

Just curious...are Frog and Cat long-time enemies, or is Cat jealous of Nephew, or does this animosity relate to the yarn incident?

I am pretty sure the smaller one is a Leopard Frog, don't know about the larger one. The small frog moved into a shallow plastic bin for the last three days were I had dug up a big clump of daylilies I wanted to divide. As I was busy and had no time to do it, I just clunked them in that bin with water. It couldn't stay there, I have to dump it ever few days so I caught it and actually put it in the stocktank. Thats why I got a good look. All these years here and I never had a frog but I had above ground for ponds. I have come to the conclusion that at least around here the frogs don't like above ground. Now I have that one small pond in my backyard 3 feet by 12 inches deep and in ground and I have decided that the stocktank will also go ingound going to start digging hole hopefully this week. So hopefully I will have frogs each year from now on.

I am a new member of this forum. I have really enjoyed looking at the terrariums linked on these pages. The info regarding certain harder-to-keep varieties of plants has also been helpful. When I read this thread, I felt that I had to reply. PDF's are not hard to keep. There are 10 year old children in my neighborhood who are successfully maintaining a vivarium with the frogs, and even breeding the frogs. Personally, I have over 50 vivariums in my home. Each one contains some poison dart frogs. Any and every color you can imagine. Orchids, bromeliads, tropical mosses, waterfalls, you name it. I really like the terrariums, but when you add a pair of bright, electric blue frogs, now you have some life!! Yes, you do have to culture, or purchase, the fruit flies. The flies we use in the hobby cannot fly. They are non-invasive and very easy to culture. They do not smell either. I have 200 cultures going at a time, there is a slight smell with this many cultures, but most visitors to our frog rooms do not even notice it. Mixing the frogs and plants to create vivariums has been the most rewarding journey of my life. I encourage everyone, not to base your opinions of keeping PDF's based on heresay, or an experience of a friend from 10 years ago. The hobby has changed drastically over the last decade. The frogs are easy to obtain, and there is soooo much info on keeping these precious little gems. Remember, everyone starts with no experience. Please fell free to email with any questions. You should find clusters of eggs right against the edge of the deeper bodies of water...or if you wait a couple more weeks, you'll be able to scoop up lots of tadpoles! If your water is good, the frogs will show up on their own, either hopping, or more amazingly, as eggs on the feet of birds. I CAN"T STAND people who walk out with poison and spray. I'm putting in a large NWF habitat, and both my enighbors have agreed not to, (spray) and I agreed to mulch their beds by my house with newspaper and pine straw, (cheap, effective, and organic) whereas they would use weed spray. Some people are ignorant, in which they can be taught, others are just plain stupid, like your person. Glad you laid down the law. HOpe the frogs show up....they sure did in our new pool last year, I can't tell you how many I rescued and ran down the the creek or pond! Scoop the tadpoles with a bucket, and slowly pour the water out..they will mostly stay in your bucket. Remember not to shock them when you put them in your pond, same temparature etc.....and slowly mix the waters as the Ph etc could be different. You have to move quick as your oxygen supply will run low. PS ask the poison man if he would eat the stuff himself?!

well, there are a few reasons frogs like your yard, the biggest is water source, remove the water source and the frogs will go away. second is food source, but I do not know how to remove that without harming the frogs with pesticides or something of the sor

Golden opportunity here for Frog and Nephew to befriend Cat. Always good to have someone you can blame things on.

Actually Jemdandy & Glenda have hit the nail on the head here.

On the one hand, the cat is just being curios and has on two or three occassions quietly and carefully approached bot Frog & Nephew to touch them with his nose or sniff them in a very innocent manner;

On the other hand,Frog is terrified that the cat desires him as lunch, and whenever the cat even comes in the room Frog has a full blown panic attack. When that occurs Frog will usually jump up on my lap for protection but in this instance Frog verbally lashed out at the cat, hoping of course that he might intimidate the cat into leaving.

NOw I am sure that many of you are thinking about telling Frog how silly he is, but before you do, let me ask you this? How many of you have exactly the same reaction if you see a mouse, a spider or a snake?

I'm with frog on this. I had a cat that would go after frogs (and lizards.) Better to be safe (take the offensive with the cat) than sorry (nephew is so small!) How smart of frog to tie his warning in with the Curiosity landing! He sure does keep up on current events!
