I have made a life changing decision !!!

After years of soul searching and looking for simplicity in my very complicated life.....Hubby and I have decided to sell our home here in Ontario and move to Newfoundland.

We have so many protest this move as they do not understand our intentions. I work for City Law enforcement, good salary , benefits and pension. Hubby works as a AZ driver.

Our life has over the years consisted of work, work, and more work....we have somehow lost the meaning of life.

In a desperate attempt to find this simplicity and meaning, we have decided to give up a sure thing, and give it a shot. It's the type of lifestyle we've always wanted , slow down the pace, smell the fresh air , enjoy the people and just SIMPLIFY

there comes a time when you have to take a risk and see where your dream takes you.....I am fairly confident that moving to a place without the rush and competition of life here can only bring my stress levels down to a minimum and allow me to get back to basics enjoying the arts and crafts I use to , when I had time, before work and surviving came into the picture.....wish me luck, I have so many hobbies to explore now that I'll have to do them. Can't wait......

Life is not a dress rehersal so you only get one shot at it, and I think it's great what you are doing. Congrats, I'm really happy for you!!!!

Your dreams will come true....you and your DH have the courage to take charge of your lives and the rest will fall into place.

I don't think I'd want to set cups in storage boxes without drainage holes and wouldn't want to ruin mine by punching holes in them. Why not set them in a cardboard box, cut down if necessary, work out drainage in the bottom, and cover with plastic? If the cardboard starts to fall apart, use another one. Or come up with an innovation of your own. I start a lot of my seeds in the spring outside in deli containers, drainage holes cut in bottom and vented at the top. As soon as they sprout, take the lids off and mist. Some I'm going to mix my pro mix which I think has fungicide with potting soil. Anyway, I only do the carryout containers for things I'm going to transplant into cell packs, slice up and plop on top of soil in plastic cups to grow on a bit, then plant with my bulb planter. Or you could plant HOS in a shallow depression in the ground scooped out. I suppose you could WS those but soil might be too shallow and you'd have to move faster when they sprout. The bulk of my winter sowing, I use gallon milk jugs like they say on the WS forum, I don't want to cut mine with the oven door method but cut almost in two leaving a hinge at the base of the handle, then tape, using packing tape from now on as duct tape too hard to pull off. Also going to use half gallon jugs and tape or tie them together in groups of four (for stability) for seeds I want to sow more sparsely. When it's safe enough, I open them up and peg the jug tops to the ground thru the opening at the top with pieces of bamboo until I'm ready to plant them, can hold a lot of stuff for most of the summer and still be ok. They say to get the jugs off the ground so they drain better, haven't tried that. I also punch at least 1/4" drainage holes in my gallon jugs w/a woodburning tool (it smells so may have to go outside or basement), 12 per jug, 3 per section.

Does changing jobs when you're 47 count as mid life crisis? LOL If it does, I did. I left my career as a park ranger to go into the nursery business. Before I became a park ranger, I worked in the printing industry (starting off as a blueprint machine operator and working my way up to manage a branch of a full service (offset, xerox, bindery, blueprint, etc.) company. It's not easy to change careers, esp. when you are older, and going into a completely different field. You often have to start at the bottom after having been on top (or at least comfortably close LOL), and it often means having to work your way up the pay scale again. I think people often get "job doldrums", esp. when you've been at the company a very long time. Maybe you just need a new challenge at your present job. My other thought is that if you REALLY do want to try something new, then you should look into it, maybe try to find a way to "dip your toes in", so to speak, to see how it feels. I'm all for following one's heart. I've had quite a line-up of fleeting odd jobs too. Dog bather rental agent for an apartment complex bartender proofreader for a graphics company technical typist Fish dept. manager at a pet store factory worker in a plastics plant my own business as a graphic designer my own business running a hands on reptile educational program telephone work for the newpaper wanda

*chuckle* Thank you and you're welcome, budge! I was out-and-about all day yesterday closing on the new house, playing in it a while and then having dinner with friends to celebrate; today we had a (long!) showing here at the old house and I had a very long nap afterward. BTW, although they're super-cool, I'm too cheap to buy the nifty elasticized mop covers when I can get "irregular" microfiber cloths at three for a buck at the dollar store and use them for a dozen other things besides the floors. :-) (Okay, I did cough up for the Bona Kemi oversized hardwood mop and two covers, but we can call that a post-hardwood-installation euphoria. ;-) It's not maneuverable enough for my bathroom though.) I just use a regular ole Swiffer frame, the simple little one that comes in three pieces (no squirty thing) for about eight bucks from the grocery store, and while it's not the strongest thing in the world if you need to scrub that hard maybe it's not the tool for you! I wet and wring out a microfiber "miracle" type cloth, drape it over the rectangular head and push little bits of it in the holes with which you secure the disposable cloths. If you want to use a cleaner that requires rinsing, just wring out one cloth in the cleaning solution, then go back over it with a second cloth dampened with clean water. Me, I'm a one-step kind of gal, and for me one of the great joys of the microfiber cloths is that they just need water to get the dirt off stuff. I think Budge may have gotten a rather more specialized and less "cheap, quick and dirty" (ahem...) product. I just combined what I already had on hand, and I know a lot of other people already have Swiffers and microfiber cleaning cloths on hand so they don't necessarily need to go buy another product either. BTW, just a weird little thing I thought I would pass along - did you know you can use a wet miracle cloth to remove makeup? It even took off waterproof mascara and extra-long-lasting lipstick without having to resort to the oily crap I usually had to use to get the stuff off. (I'm not really the makeup type, and I hate raccoon eyes and touching up lipstick!) Another case of me being cheap - I wondered why I should pay $14.99 for a "makeup remover washcloth" at one fancy store when it looked and felt like the 3/$1 miracle cloths I had at home, so I tried it next time I had to paint up my (already-adorable) visage and it worked. The squeamish might want to get a different color to keep them separate from the ones in the cleaning supplies. :-)

Do the guys at appliance stores HAVE dishdrawers? Odds are excellent that they don't live with every appliance they sell, which is why I wouldn't give their opinion too much weight. If they are just hearing from customers in the first month that they suck, well, yeah. It takes at least that long to learn to load the darn things. They ARE different. The problems, once you get over the obvious things like space constraints that not everything will fit and they don't have as many functions as some others (food grinder, heated dry, etc.), are mostly due to incorrect use and incorrect installation. Once that's figured out, they wash stuff just fine, and the difference is just how you do dishes. I don't know if they have reliability issues. I've never had a problem and I haven't seen bad reviews in that regard--at least no more than any other appliance. Of course, if I had someone looking at ~$1100 DDs and thought I could bump them up to a $1400 one, what kind of a salesman would I be if I didn't? ;) Jenn, if the drawers work for your lifestyle, you'll love them. If they don't, you'll hate them. There really IS no in between. But at least it's a standard-size hole.

How exciting for you Angela and I bet your Mom is thrilled!! I am so happy for you, and it is so great that you will be getting away from the hustle and bustle of big city life and be surrounded by the beauty that Newfoundland has to offer.

That's wonderful and I wish you much happiness and contentment in your new life. It's very easy to allow yourself to get sucked into the pressures of work and daily living - I think it's great that you've been able to stand apart and see the effect and more importantly do something to improve your life. It's thrilling! When will you be moving?

I am so happy for you and respect your decision totallly. I think that a lot of people (myself included) yearn to do just that but don't have the guts to do it. I'm glad for you that you finally did! Perhaps you've given me a kick in the butt, too. Yea for you and your DH!

Angela, I wish you all the best with your decision. There is a time in most of our lives when we want to slow down the pace and get to enjoy life and really smell the roses. Pressures of living in the Greater Toronto Area are hard. Newfoundland is a beautiful area of our country and you have some of your family there. I really think you are making a good decision.

How fantastic! It can be a bit intimidating at times, but a move to s much simpler way of living will give you the time to think about that which is really important, and honey it ain't what the "world" has to offer.
My DH and I moved to the wild woods of Tennessee back in 1986 and have not regretted one moment of it.
Newfoundland is beautiful and I know you will totally love it there.

Sounds like a great adventure!Don't be surprised if family ends up following you! That's what happened to us, my parent's moved here after we left it all in FL and then Woody's mom and then his brother and then his sister. Then my brother. All the sibs have gone back to where they came from, but it was interesting when they were here. Now just my parents are still here and it's perfect.

You sure are brave, but then the thought of beautiful Newfoundland makes it sound exciting. How soon are you doing this? And be sure to keep us posted. I think I lot of us are green with envy right now!

are you from the newfoundland area? have you lived thru the winters, ect? i so know the stress of being in a major city..we're just 4hours from you in detroit...but i also know uless you've really tried it out first, i'd proceed with caution...

there have been times i'd love to move but then we'd be leaving all our kids and grands and that would break my heart in the long run...

i do wish you the very best, and hope you're successful in selling your home, and establishing your new life...

Go for it and enjoy your new lifestyle.

We packed up and left Ca. for the Ozark hills of Missouri nearly 30 years ago and have never regreted it. I left an excellent paying job as RN and went to one making less than half of what I made formerly. We moved to a 140 acre farm and DH worked as school bus driver along with running the farm. Farming was something he swore he would never do as he grew up helping his Dad. lol. We had to scrimp and save along the way but we made it.

Congrats...You know I watch a lot of documentary and NatGeo productions and I see all these different cultures that have so little and are so obviously happy. Last night I was watching My country, My kitchen and there was a chef on there from Viet Nam....She took us on a trip to her country and cooked native foods in her family's outdoor kitchen. Poverty Level digs by our standards and yet, you could see the love and pride in the family and the fact that they were all together as a family from age 102 to an infant speaks loudly. Just walking through the mall disgusts me to see all the crap there waiting for people who feel like they have to have it..........and some times when they can't even afford it. I hope you find what you are looking for and it is a wonderful lifestyle for you.....Just

I have a friend who is in the process of doing the same thing Angela. She and hubby live in Toronto...he's retired...and they bought a little place about 30 miles out of St. John, a couple years ago. Right now they live there for 6 months of the year and come back to Ont for winter, but are planning on moving permanently in a few years...or sooner. They love it!
