I dont have a greyhound,but an abused choc lab rescue,who is the love of my life.Such a sweet,trusting forever friend.I am the LUCKY one.You wont find a better dog,than a rescued one.Hats off to you for wanting to give it a FOREVER home.You wont be sorry.

I also have a chocolate lab rescue, and he is the best (mostly, hahaha). I can't imagine my life without him. He can be a handful, as any pet can be, but I wouldn't trade him for a million bucks. Keep us updated! I love Greyhounds! The ones I've known have been such sweet and loyal dogs.

I won't be adopting for a while, my DH is away and won't get back for another week or two, then my August is very busy and I've got a week's leave early September. Plan to do it when I get back. I'm so excited!!!

We have a neighbor that has several and they are so cute. They are the mini ones.. One of them you acually have to spell the commands. They spell "out" and the dog goes out, eat and he goes to eat, bed and he goes to bed. It is the cutest thing.. Our son's daycare lady's family have the big ones and have adopted several over the years. They are really nice calm dogs.

My best friend got a rescued greyhound and I dog-sit for it occasionally. They are the sweetest things. The rescued ones from the racetracks are already trained for commands. They are just like a human when you ask it to do something. You just say a sentence in a normal voice and it responds. Even better than some humans! The dog responds and obeys with a big loving smile.

They are also very quiet and don't spend time barking every time a car drives by. The flip side of this is that they do not make very good "watchdogs". I actually was burglarized one time while dog-sitting and left the house for just one hour. I came home and the door frame was busted in and the whole house torn apart and robbed. The dog was just laying on the couch smiling. My friend the owner was also burglarized while at work. It was the same story. The dog was just standing at the door smiling, just like always, when my friend returned home. That dog was so nice and polite I bet she helped load the stuff for the burglars and offered them a beer/soda.

My friends dog interacted very nicely when meeting new animals too. They don't "attack". The one downside to a rescued greyhound it that they are trained to chase rabbits so when you walk them outside if they suddenly see a squirrel or rabbit the go from zero to sixty in like under a second and rip your arm off or even knock you off your feet. You may not want to ask Grandma to walk the dog or a younger child if your greyhound is a trained "chaser".

We know someone who has a greyhound rescue. He is such a sweety pie. You would think they need lots of room to run around all day but they really don't have to run all day at all. A few good romps every day, either on a leash or in the yard are just right. This guy is content to watch whats happening in the house most of the day. He is normally very quite and a little reserved. He loves to play with toys and has his own favorite bed right in the living room. If this guy is any indicator of most greyhounds I'd say, go for it.

We thought about a retired greyhound several years ago. One of my customers ran the rescue attached to the track in Seabrook NH. I visited often and asked lots and lots of questions. Their biggest recommendation was that we have a fenced yard. They are sight hounds and will bolt and run until they drop. We lived on 18 acres with no fences and lots of wild life. We decided against a greyhound. We rescued a pitbull instead. Best dog either of us have ever had.

I had a greyhound for nine years. Her name was Ruby Tuesday and we drove to Connecticut to get her. She ran her last race on Tuesday, was neutered Wed., taken to the rescue guy's house on Thurs. and adopted by us on Friday. Then we put her in the car and drove to PA with her with one stop along the way. She had to learn to go up steps and get used to other household noises. I took her for a 2 mile walk every day and we have a fenced in yard where she would race around. But they are couch potatoes inside. Mine was a red brindle. She died of bone cancer too young. It's a common occurance in greys. They are sweet ,docile ,quiet dogs. Now I have a Boston terrier/ Sheltie mix, and he's the smartest dog I ever had. I hope he lives longer than my Ruby did. I miss her.

Hi Jane, my SIL has a rescued greyhound and they just love him. He is such a big baby! He was a bit nervous and skittish at first but soon settled in. He also lives with two cairn terriers but all three of them get along very well. All in all, it has been a very positive experience for the family.

I love greyhounds! My sister will adopt one when her current dog is gone, who is an ederdly pooch right now.

I do!! I rescued two retired racers a year ago last May and they've been a delight - they really want to please! Jasmine is a 3 yo red fawn. She never made it to the track - wasn't focused enough to win any races but she is an excellent watch dog. She still runs races around the back yard :) Jack is a 7 yo brindle and was an A racer until he retired. He's a real laid back lovebug. Both dogs were housetrained in 1 day - easy peasy. It took a bit longer to convince them that not EVERYTHING belonged to them! Since they've never been in a house and never had their own toys, if it wasn't nailed down they tend to grab it and run. It also took awhile to train them off chewing the furniture. These dogs chew because it's what they do to keep themselves occupied when they spend time in their crates. I love them to death and I'm sure I'll continue on with this breed. The only downside I've seen is they have to be on leash if they're not in a fenced in area. They really bolt and since they're sight hounds, they don't find their way back home. Other than that, I think you'll fall in love!!

I've also heard that they are really sweet animals and make great pets.

Go for it, they are just the most wonderful dogs. I had one for 15 years. She loved running circles around our pool.

Coincidentally I'm reading a light bit of fiction that has a rescued greyhound in the story. It's Practically Perfect by Katie Fforde, a British author. It's very light reading but I've read many of her books and enjoyed them all.

I rescued a greyhound from a track in Miami and I have to tell you that she (Cola) was the best dog I have ever owned. She was so loyal and obedient and she would look into your eyes as if she understood every single word you said. I had cats at the time and had heard horrible stories about greyhounds chasing cats. Well, Cola tried running after my Siamese one time, got slapped and never bothered a cat again. They're extremely intelligent and sensitive dogs that make wonderful, loyal companions.

We looked into adopting a greyhound, but with all the wildlife that abounds here on the farm, it would have been dangerous for the dog. During our research, we found that racing dogs were fed a high-protein diet, and getting them to "come down" from that diet takes a while, and the advice of a good vet. We also learned that fences and leashes are a must--and although the dogs are long and lean, they are powerful and can pull you right off your pins! The racers also have to be introduced to things like stairs, household noises like TV and radio, and the fact that the shower stall is NOT a big watering station!
I envy you the opportunity. If there was any way in the world we could provide a safe environment for a greyhound, we would.

My niece has adopted 3 rescued greyhounds that came from tracks in Florida. 2 of them are from the same litter. She adopted the one and then went back and got the other and 2 years later she adopted the other one which I haven't met yet. After doing a lot of research Katie adopted them from the same rescue home somewhere in Ontario.

They are gentle creatures and when Katie first brought them home found they felt more comfortable being in their crates than being able to sleep elsewhere. Mind you their crates were huge and comfy with lots of blankets. Now they sleep wherever they want. LOL I think when Katie and her fiance had their house built they reserved the biggest bedroom for the dogs.

Living north of the Toronto area where it is cold the dogs wear booties and coats in the winter when they are outside.

I think they are beautiful dogs. Good luck with your adopting one.

Ruby, my grey, loved my cats. I think she thought she was one. She did eat a french baguette, the whole thing, and a book about training dogs..lol.She had separation anxiety and wanted to go everywhere with us, sometimes not posible and we'd sneak out of the house. We'd see her head pop up. She weighed 67 pounds and so this time around I opted for a smaller dog, 22 pounds.

Thanks everyone for your comments! Sounds like I get the thumbs up from the lot of you. As I said, I'm rather excited by the prospect of having someone to love and to love me back. We don't have a fenced yard, but the rescue lady said as long as I was committed to walking on the leash, we would be okay. I told her that our last dog was a beagle, also very prone to run off after a smell, and a leash was a necessity in our household. Now all I've got to do is wait and tell the cats!

My dad and I have seen some around.
There is two of them with this couple that walks them in this local dog park and they are the nicest calmest dogs ever.

I thinks its the greatest thing greyhound rescue. They finally have a loving home they can call their own.

I hear that they have greyhound societies so the greyhounds can run freely and safely. They do fun races with them

PS..Forgot to mention my cats loved our grey better than the new dog. Ruby was more laid back, while Ziggy is rambunctious, but playful. He's 18 months and she was 2 when we got her.

I have two adopted Greys, and they are such loves. Be prepared to share your home, your heart and your bed! Mine are loving and comical. They tend to "counter surf" when there is food within reach, so I have become well trained.

If "cat friendly" is important, be sure to check about that with your adoption group. While some Grey's do fine with cats other small animals, others just have a greater prey drive, and the mix is not good.

Find a Vet who has experience with Greys, as some of their lab values are different. They also require special handeling if they will require general anesthesia.

I hope you have a wonderful experience being adopted by a Greyhound. I don't think you will have regrets...you'll probably seek a second one within a short period of time.

The above poster is right. Some greys love cats, others think of them as prey. Greys are usually "cat tested" if that's an issue. I went to Conn. for mine which was reserved for me, but when I got there I spotted a little skinny girl I fell in love with. Other dog was cat tested but this one was brand new to the place and was not. I really lucked out big time now that I think about it. I muzzled our new grey when we brought her in the house and if she was aggressive, I guess I would have gone back to Conn. She loved the cats and they her..And my vet was from Florida and knew all about greys.
