Looking forward to the Boston Pops

Every 4th we turn on the Boston Pops concert, and others too, and enjoy a patriotic show. I always look forward to the 1812 Overture and the military's contribution with their cannons. It wouldn't be the 4th without the concerts and the TV fireworks shows. This year the kids are all elsewhere, and we will be just us two. We won't walk to the top of the hill to see the local shows--it has gotten so crowded on that hilltop in our development. 29 years ago when we just moved in, we were the only ones there it seemed like.

If you want to grow dahlias from seed take your own seedheads and let them mature and shuck them in January and plant them inside in March/April and transplant them after frost. You will have all brand new dahlias, some bad some good, but they will be yours and if you get a really good one you could even put it in a trial garden. Xanadu is correct in rooting shoots coming out of the ground. That is how I start many of my pot roots for the next season. Just pull them off the planted tuber carefully or you will jerk the entire plant out of the ground, put them in damp potting soil and in bright shade until they stand up. Harden them off in the sun and grow as pot roots.

I'm looking forward to, but also nervous about, seeing all the Libertys I planted in my front landscaping last year. I lost one tree and took down another in a bed that was planted 30 years ago. Wasn't up to totally re-doing it, but wasn't happy with the shape or the flatness. Added a few rocks (the biggest my hand truck and I could move) and decided to add P.I.L.s (plants I love) and just go with it for now. In addition to hydrangeas and a magnolia, I think I ended up with about 20 Libertys planted in several "waves." It's going to be pretty bright out there in a few more weeks, so here's hoping they look OK. Thank goodness for a son who was working with a landscaper - got them wholesale. :-)

Christina may be one of the worse offenders, but then I never watch Vintage Flip. I have to mute the TV when Christina speaks or else I cannot watch that show. I simply change channels when HHR is on and someone has an annoying voice. As for "Pop of color" - I am reminded of a project given to my 2-D design class, in which we had to create a geometric abstract watercolor painting and use only one fully saturated color, but it was not called "pop of color" at the time, although it served that function. The lesson was that only one saturated color should be used at a time, but this rule was lost on Piet Mondrian. My painting started out with both red and blue at pretty much full intensity, but I still felt that the blue receded. The teacher made me dull the blue for that project, but I'm not sure it helped the final result.

Dh and I grew up just north of Boston and attended for many years with friends. It's a very long day if you want good seats and it's a long walk with all of your stuff and a cooler. One year we took the boat on the Charles River anchored and watched the show. It was fun but I was a nervous wreck...too many boats and too many drunks in boats.

We always love it and got home tonight in just enough time to hear the 1812 . Hayden was dancing all over and eyes glued to the tv. One year when DH was in the navy his family came out from Nebraska and they watched the whole show. Like Msmarian said that it was a long day but he told me it is something that he really wants me to see someday.

I think it's horrible what they have done with the Pops concert.
We always tuned into one of our PBS stations to watch the concert...all 2 hours of it. And I love the 1912 overture.
About 3-4 years ago, the Pops signed the contract with CBS, who only televises the second hour, with the fireworks instead the the main concert.
Now, we only get to see the tail end of the 1812 overture, not even the full performance.

You would think that the Pops would give people who can't attend a chance to see the highlight performance...all they would have to do is to start it 5 minutes earlier.

I too was extremely disappointed. We had just watched Capitol on the 4th on PBS it was so great. I wish they had stayed on PBS, but I guess it was the money. I did not care for the MC either, and too many ads.

When I was a kid we went into Boston on the 4th once to see it. It was absolutely wonderful!!

The concert is also broadcast in it's entirety by WBZ radio 1030 AM - you can also listen to the streaming audio over the radios station's website - a little late for this year but keep it in mnd for next year.
