question on blenders

I am wanting to purchase a bender to do smoothies and frozen cofee drinks(frapee), the blender I have now does not seem to do a good job... leaves bit of ice particles.. I do love my iced coffee drinks, but in this economy they are getting a bit pricy.. any sugesstions for good blender, and recipes would be appreciated..

I got a answer.....I used my sisters Vita Mix the other night to make Wine-A=Ritas......so smooth and this was made with big hunks of ice that the freezer makes....it was soooo wonderful! NOW I do not know what one costs but know this was super!!! Stacy

UMMMMMMMMM I just looked up the price on the vita mix blenders cancel my post....the one she has was 500.00!!! I think I can handle a little bit of chunks for that money!! Stacy

Most standard blenders with the screw bottom fits mason jars. mine is the exact one in the video link here and works great its a Osterizer blender 14 speed. you could get one from wally world for $24 or at your local goodwill for like $5 Here is a link that might be useful: Blender and Mason Jar

Ooops, I have a 3 digit blender - the Vitamix. Just got it this summer at a Costco roadshow as our old $40 blender just couldn't do what we needed it to. It couldn't crush ice, couldn't pulverise vegetables, smoothies were lumpy not smooth yada yada. I've used the Vitamix daily since I got it. Today I made a strawberry/pineapple/spinach/ice smoothie, ground rice into flour and mixed a sald dressing. I usually make at least one smoothie a day - sometimes 2 or three. Obviously I am biased so I looked as Cooks Illustrated's reviews of blenders last reviewed in July 2006. Products They tested: (listed alphabetically) * Braun PowerMax Jug Blender * Cuisinart Smartpower Premiere * Emerilware * Jenn-Air Attrezzi * KitchenAid Pro Line ChefÂs Blender * L'Equip R.P.M. * Vita-Mix 5000 * Waring 2-Speed MegaMix Specialty * Waring Pro PBB For copyright reasons I can't reprint the report here (you have to be a subscriber) but here's the short version: Their Conclusion? Until a markedly better blender comes along, they'll stick with their Best Buy model for the usual blender tasksÂand rely on a food processor for everything else. The winner was the L'Equip R.P.M. with a MSRP of $134.99 but I don't think it's available any more. Also CI is biased AGAINST high priced items. It did rate the Vitamix as best smoothie maker though and that was the older model.

Personally I have both a KA mixer and Cuisinart FP. Both are ancient but have performed flawlessly in the 25+ years I have owned them. The FP will not mix batters or doughs AFAIK because it has no way to aerate like the mixer does. And the KA won't chop like the FP does. You can buy KA attachments which give it a lot more flexibility, but they are expensive, and then you have a cupboard full of extra pieces. I use the FP at least a couple of times a week, sometimes for long periods when I'm doing a lot of prep. I use the KA around once a week when I'm baking. I have the KA meat grinder and food strainer which I use less often. I like the meat grinder but the FP can also chop meat, just not as evenly. If you don't bake a lot, I would suggest getting the FP. Hope that helps, Cheryl

maydl - I wouldn't have recommended the Breville if we had had any problems with it. We have the Breville Ikon Blender #BBL600XLA. I e-mailed the company after I got mine to find out what the "A" signified; they said they had changed the company from which they get their glass and the "A" signifies that change. Ours also came with the tool for loosening and tightening. The first time I used it it leaked, but I didn't have it tight enough. It has never done that again. As I indicated in my reply to your first post, there are only 2 of us and we don't use it everyday, so it doesn't get the heavy duty use a larger family would give it. Besides Amazon, I had also checked Consumer Reports and it was their 3d highest rated with the Vita-Mix first and the Blendtec second. After the Breville was the L'Equip 228 ($170), the Oster Counterforms BVLBO7-L ($80), the Braun PowerMax MX2050 (a CR best buy) ($50). All of them passed CRs "durability". Maybe you'll want to check out some of the other brands listed and maybe pose your question on the appliance forum. I hope whatever you buy you don't have any problems and will enjoy it!

I have a Cuisinart blender with an "ice crush" feature. I bought it at Sam's Club about 2 years ago for under $60. it works great and we use it to make smoothies every single day in the warm weather. I don't know where you're located but places like Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, Macy's and Sears carry the Cuisinart. Mine has a kind of square base and has a glass container, which I like. The only complaint I have is that sometimes when you're pouring, the spout drips a bit. It's stainless steel and black and it's a pretty basic one. It has "on", "off", "high", "low", "pulse" and "ice crush".

I've got one of these, you've never seen power until you give this one a try. Of course, you can't use it inside. But it's a very powerful appliance, if you have need of an outdoor blender

I have a VitaMix blender and I love it! Worth every penny.
(I bought it a long time ago when DH was being a total jerk.)
I make a coffee/cocoa drink much better than Starbuck's and a lot healthier. I use tofu as a protein base.

I talked to my sister and she got hers at Sams years ago when they were having a demo she paid 300 but it was org. 500 so you might find a promo on one....Carol maybe that is what i need to do one day huh? I covet my sisters after using hers....Stacy

I've heard that the Breville brand is good too - still pricey but not as much (I think). Also, has anyone used the Margueritaville Makers? I know that Q*C has had them on special a few times so that you don't have to pay the entire amount all at one time. They are pretty expensive too, but don't know of quality. I saw them at BB&B the other weekend and your pocket will be a little bit lighter if you buy one.

Well I didn't know we were in the market for blenders but we bought a Black and decker Home cyclone blender...LOL DH wants wine a ritas here and we didn't have a blender...I will let you know how it runs and crushes later tonight.......Stacy
