a blender for blenderizing fruits and vegetables

Does anyone have any experience or advice regarding a good blender without paying the ridiculous three digit price.My goal for better nutrition is to blenderize, but I got sticker shocked when I saw the very high cost of these blenders online. What makes these things so special from the common 40 dollar blender? Will a simple blender do the job?

I think it depends on what your expectations are. Are you blending ice in your smoothies? Are you using frozen fruit or fresh fruit? If you are not using ice and frozen fruit, I think a regular blender will be fine for your needs. I think if you are using frozen fruit and ice and expect a smooth product, a more powerful unit is required.

Breville, KitchenAid, BlendTec and Vitamix have all gotten good reviews on the forum.

Manual ways of reducing melon rinds and such involve a heavy knife, or, if you want to take out your aggression on the fruit, a machete. My mother had a manual meat grinder when I was a kid, and I've seen vegetable slicers of the same sort. If one of those can reduce carrots to slivers, it would do the same for melon rinds. Paper can be hand-shredded or you can use a paper cutter to cut it into strips and then cut the strips crosswise. Either way, it's a lot of work, and I don't know if most people are willing to put that much effort into it. Generally, if something requires a little personal effort and a little electricity, it's more likely to get done than if it requires a lot of manual effort and time and no electricity. If that were not the case, "labor-saving" electrical devices would never have become popular. To be completely honest, I do have a powerful blender with a container dedicated to compost. I tend to use it when I'm cleaning out the fridge and getting rid of all the leftovers that are growing green fuzzy things. I'll usually wind up with a bucket full of nasty slurry, which then gets dumped into the compost pile and covered with shredded leaves or wood chips. My blender can handle meat and bones as well as veggies, enabling me to compost things that are usually on the "do not compost" list by breaking them down into tiny particles which rot quickly before attracting flies. Most of the time, however, I just dump things into the compost without shredding. I think that the energy used in shredding is offset by the energy used in manufacturing a black plastic bag, using a big smoke-belching diesel truck to take the bag to the landfill (or the incinerator), and then using a big smoke-belching diesel bulldozer to bury the bag in the landfill (or using more fuel to burn it); either way the organic material will be lost to the ecosystem., and in the case of the incinerator, which is where my trash would go, the carbon is emitted as CO2. IMO, it's much better to have it in the garden nurturing the roses, no matter how it got there.

We too are thinking of investing in a Vitamix. America's Test Kitchen just tested it against something else, and ranked something of equal value, but cheaper...forget the model. But, we've been using the Nutribullet for our green drinks - one last try at a cheaper, easy to clean machine. It works great as long as I don't overpack it, and screw the top on tight - or else it leaks. And it needs just the right balance of liquid with solids to totally puree those seeds. So, too many caveats, and I too might be looking for a last-time investment. I enjoy reading everyone's opinions on this...thank you!

I have an old VitaMix w/ reversible motor. I use the reverse function when I grind egg shells into powder. DSII bought a Ninja that he uses for making smoothies. I've only used it a couple of times. It's a Rube Goldberg contraption and is somewhat confusing to assemble the different blades, bowls/ containers. I default to using my old Cuisinart food processor, the Vita Mix or a stick blender. Also have a regular Oster blender--seldom used. Mostly, I use a stick blender or the food processor. I use the bread maker to make yeast & pasta dough. (Super easy clean--just let the leftover dough bits dry & they flake off.) Kitchen Aid mixer is used for making cookies & cakes that need long mix times for creaming butter & sugar. Use a hand mixer for making mashed potatoes.

Ooops, I have a 3 digit blender - the Vitamix. Just got it this summer at a Costco roadshow as our old $40 blender just couldn't do what we needed it to. It couldn't crush ice, couldn't pulverise vegetables, smoothies were lumpy not smooth yada yada.

I've used the Vitamix daily since I got it. Today I made a strawberry/pineapple/spinach/ice smoothie, ground rice into flour and mixed a sald dressing.

I usually make at least one smoothie a day - sometimes 2 or three.

Obviously I am biased so I looked as Cooks Illustrated's reviews of blenders last reviewed in July 2006.

For copyright reasons I can't reprint the report here (you have to be a subscriber) but here's the short version:

Their Conclusion? Until a markedly better blender comes along, they'll stick with their Best Buy model for the usual blender tasksÂand rely on a food processor for everything else.

The winner was the L'Equip R.P.M. with a MSRP of $134.99 but I don't think it's available any more.

Also CI is biased AGAINST high priced items. It did rate the Vitamix as best smoothie maker though and that was the older model.

Forget to put the best buy...

It was the Braun PowerMax Jug Blender Model MX2050 at $44.99 and it got 4.5 stars out of 465 reviews on amazon.com

My 7 speed Oster has been going strong for 20 years, now the seals are gone. I want a new toy so I started researching Kitchenaid blenders. Found a 3 speed at Goodmans for $29.99. I read reviews and some like it some don't. On the same site there is a 5 speed Ultra power for $34.99! The prices are VERY appealing.
