I always have a $ stash hidden in my car in the event that I lose my purse, I also have a spare key hidden in my side mirror. If you push the mirror sideways you can put a key in there.

Yep. Always have cash for parking lots, and garages, just in case I don't have enough to cover.

We have $20 stashed in the glovebox for each vehicle, for emergencies. DH has gone all the way into town to pick up something specific, and then realized he didn't have his billfold!

my car has the keyless remote, and my keys are generally in cupholder when I get out at the gym

Glenda- Where I live you have to have your driver's license, owner's registration and insurance card with you when you drive. You don't need them with you in Alabama? Do you carry any identification?

As for emergency money I always have my credit card and usually $200 for that purpose. And I fill my tank when it drops below 1/2 tank. That way if there's an accident and I'm stuck sitting in traffic I should have enough gas. Just yesterday one our main freeways was shut down because of heavy rain and flooding. People were stuck in their cars for hours. I try to be reasonably prepared.

As a young'un I recall my uncle had a bunch of pennies and a few nickels and such lined up on the flat front of the dashboard on his car and someone asked him what it was for and he said so he'd always have money for parking meters. That stuck with me. Ever since I got my first car I'd keep some change in there and as time went on of course inflation set in. But I keep several dollars worth of change so I could get a couple gallons of gas in an emergency or if I had no cash and wanted to grab a burger or something, or if I needed something like aspirin or something I'd have a few dollars to take care of it.

I also carry water, aspirin, extra pair of glasses, umbrella, lawn chair and a small box with some bandages and such in it. During the winter, jumper cables, tow strap, a heavy jacket, etc.

I suppose keeping a little money in the car isn't a bad idea but be sure to keep it out of sight. A local TV station did a report about car vandalism a few years ago and the policeman they interviewed for the piece said, "People will smash a car window for a dime!", at least here in Phila.

I used to, but stopped somewhere along the way. I would spend it and never replace it. I've been just sticking my license in my gym bag, no purse or wallet.

I don't, but then I'm usually only 4-5 miles from home. When I go somewhere and don't want to take my purse, I put my license in my pants pocket. You never know if you will gwt stopped.

I mainly keep a bunch of change b/c I'm always trying to get rid of change--it's heavy and takes a lot to do anything with. My new car doesn't have a "key" it has a fob, and you have to have your foot on the brake to start it, or stop it. I worried me the first couple of times we valet parked, but I guess those guys know everything!! I keep about $200 in my purse and several $$$ in the car.

Good idea but I don't think it would work for me. I'd be too tempted to grab it for spending money. I'd be at the coffee drive-thru within a day. I tend to carry my keys, license and a little cash ($5 or less) in my jacket pocket when I go out. Rather than carry a purse.

License, registration and insurance card are all in the glovebox paper clipped together. I think there is about five bucks in the center console.

Been doing that for years. Always have a couple hundred stashed in my wallet too.

I have a little money in the car, and it sure has come in handy. I always replace whatever I use. I also keep money in the house. If there is an area-wide disaster, banks might not be open and you might need money. Also it's a good idea not to let the car gas get too low, because gas stations might be closed as well. (I'm thinkin' earthquake here.) Maryanntx is the expert on all this emergency preparedness, I think.

It's not me Socks. I seldom prepare for emergencies. I'm an optimist who thinks nothing is going to happen.
I do keep loose change in my car.

Since I started swimming this summer, I keep my drivers' license in the car and just take my keys with me in my tote bag when I go to the pool. I keep a little change in the car for parking meters. I don't let my car get too low on gas and I always have my ATM card and charge card with me when I am running errands.

And of course you don't leave money in plain sight, but then again you shouldn't leave purses, GPSs, cell phones, chargers for any of this, brackets for GPSs, etc in sight either. Some people will break in for anything.
