What is on page one of your newspaper?

Ours here in Minot ND is all State Fair and the winners of the pie contest sponsored by our Governor's wife. Pictures of the parade, who won what etc.

Lots of important news! (anyway to local people is)

Well, Marie, I have the Fargo Forum and they have that apartment buying and renting was up, and a picture of Dave Mathiews.

Ours is on the budget and the local economy. Unfortunately our newspaper which at one time was considered one of the best if not the best in the nation has become one giant editorial so I just skim the Sunday edition now. I get my news off the net. More editorializing but at least it's free.

With Firefox when there is an interruption in the connection such as the rotor plug being unplugged, there's a little notice at the bottom right corner of the screen at the icon of the two tiny gray computer screens, in the blue bottom Windows taskbar strip, saying that a cable has been unplugged. (That's the blue strip down where you have the time and date.) On my daughter's wireless connection there is also a notice in the same place when the connection is cut.

I use firefox (love it!) and double check on IE. I don't have netscape installed (I really hate it!!) so I can't tell you about netscape however I can say that spewey is right and that IE handles some html coding poorly. I have had problems with picture resizing (my fault). Firefox sizes larger photos to fit on the screen. IE doesn't do this. Sometimes I forget this and check my page and end up with this huge photo. So I have to go back to photoshop and resize it so it doesn't fall off the screen in IE. Other problems I have seen have to do with formatting. I will double check my code and it appears fine however IE doesn't seem to handle it like firefox. I guess I should just start developing using IE and that would save me a step! -renee

Buehl, please do! I was just trying to save something of use. I'd been checking the GW all night, turned my back for 15 minutes to watch the Health Care vote, and whammo! all the posts were gone. I kept refreshing, thinking, "This can't be!"

I can see it now! And the verbiage has changed. It gave me a good chuckle. One of these things is not like the other??? "There is no prediction for Old Faithful Geyser. Sometimes Rangers are unable to make predictions because of environmental factors. Geysers are also natural phenomena and change behavior. The next prediction will be made when it is possible to do so. We apologize for the inconvenience. Old Faithful, named by members of the 1870 Washburn Expedition, was once called 'EternityÃ¢ÂÂs Timepiece' because of the regularity of its eruptions." I think they need to change "regularity" to another word, like frequency. ;)

I don't take any newspapers anymore. But this thread brought up a pleasant memory. It hasn't been too many years that a huge portion of our two local tiny papers was taken up with local 'correspondents' in the little bergs around the area. Each would report all of the local gossip: who went on vacation and where; who ate Sunday dinner at the Jones house (and even the menues); who had to stay home a couple of days last week due to a cold or the flu; someone who had broken a limb,,,,,and on and on.

Marie, you're lucky that it was STATE fair news....our local paper this week will report on our COUNTY fair!! And shortly the local grocery store will be selling the meat from the animals who won blue ribbons.

Marilyn sue--can't you read your local paper online? That's how I prefer to get my news--free, doesn't destroy trees, and no mess to lug out to the recycling bin.

Our front page had 3 main headlines. A man stole a tow truck, a state senator apologized for his misdeeds before being sentenced to prison, and they're considering dropping our trash collection from 2 days a week to 1, AND changing the fee (I think we'll be paying more for less, near as I can tell.

Azzalea, with my slow dial up it takes forever for the paper to load in and then it is just briefs, so I don't mess with it. Gadgets, your post about the reporters writing about the happenings in the neighborhood remind me of when I was still at home, 65 plus years ago the county newspaper had housewife reporters that wrote up the news in their neighborhoods. I think my aunt was one of them. Nice to read about the people you know, sort of like we do now on the KT.

Boo Hoo...the dying of newspapers. My husband retired four years ago as a reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper. I miss the way papers used to be. We still subscribe, but it's so thin now....Can't take the laptop everywhere, you know. I hate reading the paper on the web.

We'll be sorry soon, when there are no ordinary reporters covering the boring stuff...library boards, school boards, obits (they're going too, folks), local corruption, etc.

Our front page is about unemployment, the economy, and health care.

An article about the failure of the effort to introduce the Mexican wolf back into its habitat in the southwest. Very interesting.

Study arms President in overhaul of health care

Sweet Dreams Day draws biggest crowd yet (We have a Hershey Plant and a McKee (Little Debbie) Plant here and 3 years ago it was decided to have a Fair every year. Rides, bands, contests, etc. Includes big pic of 11 year old boy blowing huge bubble in bubble gum blowing contest. He was the winner.)

Palin faces questions as she exits Alaska politics

Two weeks ago I changed my subscription to weekends only. I read the other days on line. I want the weekend ads and TV Schedule.

We love our morning paper--in fact we get two. Todays headlines for the St. Pete Times was a story on health care and people leaving the hospital too soon. Our Ocala paper had a story about the housing crunch and FSU's coach Bobby Bowden and the NCAA. I love working the crossword puzzles and luckily the papers have different ones.

Our Ocala paper has not only gotten skinnier, but it's gotten more narrow. I hate to think of mornings with the newspaper. :-(

Ours is a weekly paper and mostly like the papers Gadgets mentioned.
Headlines last Thurs
= County fair pictures
= Sewer plant bids opened, project below $4M budget
= Picture of hometown native Ernie Hays, organist at Busch stadium with a 4 year old youngster from this area at a Cardinals game in St. Louis
=Article about vandalism to the new sidewalk at the high school that was caught on surveillance camera led to the arrest of two juveniles, ages 11 and 13, along with two men ages 53 and 38!! Damages $1,500. Kids referred to Juvenile authorities.

There is never any national news in the paper, just local town, county and on occasion state.
